Riskard 2005. New tools for prediction of cardiovascular disease risk derived from Italian population studies.

2005

Abstract Background and aim The need to update tools for the estimate of cardiovascular risk prompted the “Gruppo di Ricerca per la Stima del Rischio Cardiovascolare in Italia” to produce a new chart and new software called Riskard 2005. Methods and results Data from 9 population studies in 8 Italian regions, for a grand total of 17,153 subjects (12,045 men and 5,108 women) aged 35–74 and for a total exposure of about 194,000 person/years were available. A chart for the estimate of cardiovascular risk (major coronary, cerebrovascular and peripheral artery disease events) in 10 years was produced for men and women aged 45–74 free from cardiovascular diseases. Risk factors employed in the est…

Coronary artery disease: seeing or foreseeing?

2013

This editorial refers to ‘Discordance between Framingham Risk Score and atherosclerotic plaque burden’, by A. Pen et al., doi:10.1093/eurheartj/ehs473 The prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been a major priority and challenge for policy-makers and healthcare workers for at least five decades. In this ‘co-ordinated set of actions, at public and individual level, aimed at eradicating, eliminating, or minimizing the impact of CVDs and their related disability’,1 the capacity to predict the presence of coronary atherosclerosis obviously plays a central role. Studies show that the combination of a few major risk factors is an easily accessible proxy for risk stratification: the Europ…

Applying System Dynamics Modeling To Foster a Cause-and-Effect Perspective in Dealing with Behavioral Distortions Associated with a City’s Performanc…

2015

This paper aims to show how applying system dynamics methodology to performance management can provide a powerful modeling perspective enabling public sector organizations to prevent, detect, and counteract behavioral distortions associated with performance measurement. A dynamic performance management approach is able to support performance management system designers in outlining and implementing a consistent set of measures that can allow public sector decision-makers to pursue sustainable organizational learning and development. This perspective implies a major shift from a static to a dynamic picture of organizational processes and results. It means framing delays between causes and ef…

Framing the public: the policy process around xenotransplantation in Latvia and Sweden 1970–2004

2011

A crucial debate is under way concerning the public's participation in biotechnology decision-making processes. This study, concerning the policy process around xenotransplantation (XTP) in Latvia and Sweden in the period 1970–2004, focuses on how scientific experts and politicians view the public and the public's participation in the process of developing policy regarding XTP. Drawing on interviews with actors involved in XTP in each country, we analyse and explain the inclusion and exclusion of publics in policy decision-making processes. In particular, we highlight the significance of the role of scientists and politicians in generating discourses which exclude the public from participat…

Pasireotide treatment reduces cardiometabolic risk in Cushing’s disease patients: an Italian, multicenter study

2018

Purpose: Patients with Cushing’s disease (CD) experience metabolic alterations leading to increased cardiovascular mortality. Recently, the visceral adiposity index (VAI) has been proposed as a marker of visceral adipose tissue dysfunction (ATD) and of the related cardiometabolic risk. We aimed to evaluate the impact of 12-month pasireotide treatment on cardiometabolic risk in CD patients. Methods: This is a multicentre, prospective, and observational study. Sixteen CD patients, referred to the Endocrine Units of the University Hospitals of Messina, Napoli, Padova, and Palermo (Italy), successfully treated with pasireotide for 12 month have been enrolled. In all patients, we assessed anthro…

Presentation of CEOs in the media: A framing analysis

2018

Chief executive officers as representatives of their companies are increasingly the focus of attention from both the public and the media. The head manager represents the company and in some cases even personifies it. The growing exposure of chief executive officers has turned some of these individuals into celebrities and media stars. Some studies have shown that the image of the chief executive officer is closely linked to that of the company. However, the presentation of chief executive officers in media coverage has received little research interest. The present study aims to fill this research gap by conducting a content analysis of two German newspapers and one magazine published from…

Validation of a Model for Identification of Patients at Intermediate to High Risk for Complications Associated With Acute Symptomatic Pulmonary Embol…

2015

For patients with acute symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE), the Bova score classifies their risk for PE-related complications within 30 days after diagnosis. The original Bova score was derived from 2,874 normotensive patients with acute PE who participated in one of six prospective PE studies. We retrospectively assessed the validity of the Bova risk model in normotensive patients with acute PE diagnosed in an academic urban ED. Two clinician investigators used baseline data for the model's four prognostic variables to stratify patients into the three Bova risk stages (I-III) for 30-day PE-related complications. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the κ statistic were used to asse…

The effects of message framing in CSR advertising on consumers’ emotions, attitudes, and behavioral intentions

2022

While recent research on sustainability communication demonstrates the relevance of message framing, research on the effects of message framing on consumers' emotions is scant. Using the Stimulus-Organism-Response (5-0-R) framework, this paper examines the impact of environmental advertisements (stimuli) on two discrete emotions - hope and guilt - (organism) and how these emotions influence consumers' behavioral intentions (responses). Relying on the prospect theory, this study focuses on positive (gain) and negative (loss) frames. Study 1 shows that, in the context of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), a gain message elicits hope while a loss-message triggers guilt. Study 2 shows that …

Development and validation of a novel risk score for asthma exacerbations: The risk score for exacerbations.

2015

BACKGROUND: Identifying patients at risk of future severe asthma exacerbations, those whose asthma might be less treatment responsive, or both might guide treatment selection. OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate predictors for failure to achieve Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA)-defined good current asthma control and severe exacerbations on treatment and to develop a simple risk score for exacerbations (RSE) for clinical use. METHODS: A large data set from 3 studies comparing budesonide/formoterol maintenance and reliever therapy with fixed-dose inhaled corticosteroid/long-acting ?2-agonist therapy was analyzed. Baseline patient characteristics were investigated to determine dominant pre…
