Negative impact of freeze–thaw cycles on the survival of tardigrades
2023
Global warming effects in temperate and polar regions include higher average temperatures and a decrease in snow cover, which together lead to an increase in the number of freeze–thaw cycles (FTC). These changes could affect the fitness of both terrestrial and aquatic species. In this study, we tested how tardigrades, ubiquitous microscopic invertebrates, face FTC. Tardigrades are amongst the most resistant animals to unfavorable conditions, including long and deep freezing periods, and are an emerging model group for invertebrate ecology and evolution. We used 12 populations of tardigrades, representing different families within order Parachela, inhabiting different ecosystems (glaciers, s…
Viability and function of the cryopreserved whole rat ovary: comparison between slow-freezing and vitrification
2011
Objective To investigate four different protocols for cryopreservation of the whole rat ovary with intact vasculature to evaluate whether differences exist in post-thawing viability of the ovary after either vitrification or slow freezing. Design Experimental study. Setting Obstetrics and gynecology department. Animal(s) Immature Sprague-Dawley female rats. Intervention(s) Ovaries were isolated with the vascular tree intact up to the bifurcation of the abdominal aorta and were subsequently cannulated. The ovaries were flushed with increasing concentrations of the cryoprotectant dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to either 1.5 or 7 M. The ovaries underwent cryopreservation by vitrification or passive…
Gait Disorders Questionnaire–Promising Tool for Virtual Reality Designing in Patients With Parkinson's Disease
2019
Background: Gait disorders (GD) are frequent and disabling symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease, mostly because they significantly limit mobility and often lead to fear of falls or actual falls. Nowadays, rehabilitation is considered to be the most effective nonpharmacological approach to reduce risk of falls. Using paradigms in virtual reality (VR) is a promising tool in neurorehabilitation because of the potential improvement in motor learning and improvement in daily functioning by replicating everyday real-life scenarios. Objective: To identify the most prevalent everyday situations which impair gait in PD that could be simulated in virtual reality (VR) environment. Methods: A …
TRANSCRANIAL DIRECT CURRENT STIMULATION FOR TREATMENT OF FREEZING OF GAIT IN PARKINSON’S DISEASE. A CROSS-OVER STUDY

A pig model of hepatic cryotherapy. In vivo temperature distribution during freezing and histopathological changes
2003
We aimed to assess the temperature distribution in the cryolesion during hepatic cryotherapy and the association with postoperative histological changes to optimise the technique and allow better preoperative planning. Hepatic cryolesions were produced in 22 pigs following laparotomy using a CMS-cryosystem and 8mm-AccuProbe-Cryoprobes. The temperature was measured in 1 min intervals at different distances from the probe during freezing. The animals were treated in 5 groups: (i) single freezing of 20 min; (ii) double freezing of 20 min each; (iii) single freezing of 40 min; (iv) single freezing of 20 min (n=4), histology at 1 week p.o., and (v) single freezing of 20 min and Pringle manoeuvre…
Effect of different packaging methods on the free amino acid profiles of the deep-water rose shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) during frozen storage
2022
The composition of free amino acids (FAAs) in seafood products contributes to characterizing their flavor, as well as freshness and quality during storage. Deep-water rose shrimps (Parapenaues longirostris, Lucas, 1846) (DWRS) are being increasingly harvested in the Mediterranean Sea, and the captured specimens are quickly frozen onboard fishing trawlers to preserve freshness and post-harvest quality. Here, we quantified the FAA profiles of DWRS packaged using five methods: (1) 100% N2; (2) vacuum; (3) 50% N2 + 50% CO2; (4) commercial anhydrous sodium sulfite; and (5) air (control). All samples were quickly frozen at −35°C and stored for 12 months at −18°C. Arginine (661 mg/100 g), proline …
