In times of educational expansion, privileged families are looking for new strategies of distinction. Referring to Pierre Bourdieu���s theory of distinction, we argue that choosing Latin at school ��� a language that is no longer spoken and therefore has no direct value ��� is one of the strategies of privileged families to set themselves apart from less privileged families. Based on two surveys we conducted at German schools, the paper analyzes the relationship between parents��� educational background and the probability that their child will learn Latin. Every learner has the right to acquire a good pronunciation, but unfortunately today, phonetics still plays a secondary role to grammar and vocabulary training in the classroom. Furthermore, it is primarily treated from an orthoepic point of view. This contribution presents a contrastive approach to phonetics. It explains why learners have a “foreign accent” and what contrastive pronunciation training should include as well as precisely what contrastive listening, contrastive background knowledge and contrastive exercises mean. It is limited to learners of German as a foreign language with Italian as their mother tongue.

Das Lernen des Deutschen in der Schule hat nicht nur in ganz Finnland, sondern auch in der Stadt Jyväskylä drastisch abgenommen. Um dieser Tendenz entgegenzuwirken, wurde Anfang 2010 in Jyväskylä ein nationales Pilotprojekt initiiert, das vom finnischen Zentralamt für Unterrichtswesen finanziert wurde. Zu den Zielen des Projekts gehörten die Entwicklung und Erforschung von Didaktik und Methodik im schulischen Fremdsprachenunterricht sowie des Fremdsprachenerwerbs des Deutschen. Speziell sollte der Einfluss authentischer Lehrmaterialien und authentischen Lernens auf die Motivation und Handlungsfähigkeit von A2-Lernenden untersucht werden.
