On subjective (and intensifier) I think (that) in parliamentary debate sessions
2018
This paper presents a behavioral analysis of the doxastic form creo (que) as a subjectification modal verb, specifically in its manifestation as a pragmatic intensifier device in a Spanish parliamentary debate. Previous work on creo (que) has suggested that it is indeed an intensifier (Fuentes 2010, Brenes 2015, Cuenca 2015), although many pragmatic approaches to these doxastic verbal forms, not only in the context of Spanish (Hennemann 2012; Albelda, Briz, Cestero, Kotwica y Villalba 2014) but also from other languages (Lakoff 1972; Hooper 1975; Lysvag 1975; Fraser 1975, 1980; Holmes 1984; Caffi 1999, 2004), have classified creo (que) as a marker of attenuation. The goal of this investigat…
2019
This article analyses the use of the approximators como and como que in Chilean Spanish, and the link between their approximative semantic value and pragmatic mitigation. Previous works have given the marker como an approximative value (Mihatsch, 2009, 2010; Jørgensen and Stenstrøm 2009; Jørgensen, 2011; Holmvik, 2011; Kornfeld, 2013; Kern, 2014; Jiménez and Flores-Ferrán, 2018), and also a mitigating one (Puga, 1997; Briz, 1998; Jørgensen, 2011; Holmvik, 2011; Kornfeld, 2013, Panussis, 2016; Mondaca, 2017; Panussis and San Martín, 2017). Thus, the objective here is to analyze the relationship between semantic approximation and pragmatic mitigation through these particles, in order to estab…

Powered by public relations? Mutual perceptions of PR practitioners’ bases of power over journalism
2017
Public relations practitioners depend on journalists to report information, and journalists count on public relations practitioners to provide information. This mutual dependence gives the two parties a degree of power over each other that can be wielded if certain resources are available. However, there are many unanswered questions about how public relations exerts power over journalists and how these influence attempts may affect news coverage. We differentiate six bases of power that public relations practitioners may use to influence journalists. To test the use of these bases of power, we conducted a quantitative survey among German journalists and public relations practitioners. Our…
On poles and centers: Cities in the French style
2005
International audience; The “multicentric city” is an oversimplified view of the contemporary city. The term “center” covers a multi-faceted reality. A center is not only a concentration of activities. It also means domination, power, creation and interaction. Consequently, the “secondary centers” do not necessarily replicate the main center and they are clearly differentiated. We define the “pole” as a concentration ofactivities, whatever their nature, and the “center” as a concentration of high-order and strategic activities, so that the so-called multicentric cities may be both multipolar and monocentric. This suggests what we call the Multipolar-Monocentric hypothesis. The paper sets out …
The price of climate: French consumer preferences reveal spatial and individual inequalities.
2009
National audience; We use the hedonic price method to study consumer preferences for climate temperature, very hot or cold days, and rainfall) in France, a temperate countrywith varied climates. Data are for (i) individual attributes and prices of houses and workers and (ii) climate attributes interpolated from weather stations. We show that French households value warmer temperatures while very hot days are a nuisance. Such climatic amenities are attributes of consumers’ utility function; nevertheless, global warming assessments by economists, such as the Stern Review Report (2006), ignore these climatic preferences. The social welfare assessment is changed when the direct consumption of c…
In 1828, in Mana, in French Guyana, Anne-Marie Javouhey was the maker of a complex society experiment, between suggestions of utopian socialism and Jesuit reductions of the seventeenth century, which would become a laboratory for the redemption of marginalized Europeans and for the emancipation of the blacks of Africa brought to the colonies.
Repenser l’intégration républicaine à l’aune de l’interculturalité
2018
2015
In Portugal and in its former colonies, the expression "constitucionalismo outorgado » is part of the constitutional vocabulary since the granting of the Charter of 1826. The French inspiration is obvious ; however, no equivalent expression exists in France. This curiosity leads to measure all the ambiguity of the concept of "granted constitutionalism", an improbable oxymoron according to the president of the Portuguese Republic, Teófilo Braga. Is it about a simple political and linguistic claim, a temporary compromise at the end of a frustrated Revolution? Or does it translate a deeper program, to reconcile both sides of the constitutionalism, ancient and modern ?
