Innovative connections for steel-concrete-trussed beams: a patented solution

2023

The most recent design strategies welcome the adoption of innovative techniques for seismic energy input mitigation, aiming to achieve high dissipation capacity, prevent the structure from collapse and ensure the serviceability of the construction. Friction damper devices have been widely adopted in framed steel structures for decades, while their introduction in different structural types is still under investigation. This paper presents the outcomes of innovative research supported by the industry and conducted on beam-to-column connections of RC structures in which the beams are Hybrid Steel-Trussed Concrete Beams (HSTCBs) and the columns are classical RC pillars. An innovative solution,…

Stochastic sensitivity of steel frames with connection dampers by modal analysis

2002

A procedure for evaluation of dynamic response sensitivity of multistory steel frames with added viscoelastic beam to column connections by modal analysis is presented. The connection behavior is modeled by a Kelvin-Voigt element, consisting of a rotational spring and a dashpot connected in parallel. Consistent mass, stiffness and damping matrices of the multistory frame are utilized, leading to a structure modeling as a non-classically damped system. The procedure is based on the dynamic modification method, that allows to evaluate the response of non-classically damped structure by modal superposition, without transformation in the complex space. The differential equations governing the e…

Variable Friction Dampers (VFD) for a modulated mitigation of the seismic response of framed structures: Characteristics and design criteria

2022

In this paper a new approach for the energy dissipation is discussed based on the use of Variable Friction Dampers (VFDs). The VFD device is borrowed from braking systems mechanical engineering, able to modulate its capability of dissipation, providing a constant pure friction force coupled with an additional (variable) damping force with the increasing of the displacement. Resorting to a previous study, the characteristics and the efficiency of the “braking” system in terms of reduction of the displacements and the restoring forces is described for SDOF systems under seismic excitations and compared with the performances achievable by classic constant friction dampers (CFDs). Then, a desig…

Modelling steel jacketed RC columns: Remarks by experimental-numerical comparisons

2015

The recent large use of nonlinear seismic assessment techniques requires the definition of highly reliable computational models. The retrofitting or strengthening of RC columns by steel angles and battens is a commonly adopted technique, used to improve strength and deformation capacity of existing RC buildings. In the case of steel angles not directly loaded, the numerical definition of the cross-section model has to be handled carefully since it is affected by more uncertainties. The vertical load carried by the angles is a function of the lateral confinement pressure, the cohesion and the friction coefficient between the materials, parameters which are not always easy to predict. The pap…

Seismic response of RC frames with HSTC beams endowed with friction damper devices

2019

The aim of this work is to compare the seismic response of RC frames built using Hybrid Steel-Trussed Concrete Beams (HSTCBs) whether or not equipped with friction damper devices installed at the beam-to-column joints. Due to their small depth-to-span ratios, HSTCBs usually lead to a large amount of rebar within the beam-column joint, potentially reducing its cyclic performance. Therefore, the adoption of a friction system at the beam-tocolumn joint provides two main advantages, i.e. limiting the shear forces, and thus the potential damage, in the panel zone thanks to the increasing of the bending moment lever arm, and assigning to the device the task of dissipating the incoming seismic ene…

Design of friction connections in R.C. structures with hybrid steel-trussed concrete beams

2019

In this work a feasibility study on the use of friction devices within beam-to-column joints of RC structures is conducted. The connection is made between RC columns cast in-situ and semi-prefabricated steel-concrete beams, named Hybrid Steel-Trussed-Concrete Beams (HSTCBs). Nowadays, HSTCBs are widely adopted in civil and industrial buildings and, therefore, it is required to evaluate their compliance with the capacity design criteria and their seismic energy dissipation capability. However, the design of the reinforcement of such beams usually lead to the adoption of large amount of steel within the panel zone which becomes potentially vulnerable to the effects of seismic cyclic actions a…

Friction-based beam-to-column connection for low-damage RC frames with hybrid trussed beams

2022

Hybrid Steel-Trussed Concrete Beam (HSTCB) is structural typology suitable for light industrialization. HSTCBs usually cover long span with small depths, which lead to significant amount of longitudinal rebars. The latter make beam-column joints more prone to damage due to earthquake-induced cyclic actions. This phenomenon can be avoided using friction-based BCCs. Friction devices at Beam-to-Column Connections (BCCs) have become promising solutions to reduce the damage experienced by structural members during severe earthquakes. Few solutions have been developed for cast-in-place Reinforced Concrete (RC) and steel-concrete composite Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs), because of the difficulty …

Full scale tests of the base-isolation system for an emergency hospital

2019

The paper presents the results of some full-scale tests regarding the base-isolation system of the emergency room building of the polyclinic hospital in Palermo (Italy). This building has been recently realized and its base isolation system is characterized by double friction pendulum isolators. Static lateral pushing tests were aimed at identifying fundamental mechanical properties of the whole isolation level (e.g. friction forces and stiffness) in order to verify the agreement with the design hypotheses. Further dynamic tests provided different displacements of the isolated base followed by the instantaneous release (snap-back tests), in order to verify the effectiveness, the mechanical …

Further Experiments on the Effect of Bulk In-Cylinder Temperature in the Pressurized Motoring Setup Using Argon Mixtures

2020

Mechanical friction and heat transfer in internal combustion engines have long been studied through both experimental and numerical simulation. This publication presents a continuation study on a Pressurized Motoring setup, which was presented in SAE paper 2018-01-0121 and found to offer robust measurements at relatively low investment and running cost. Apart from the limitation that the peak in-cylinder pressure occurs around 1 DegCA BTDC, the pressurized motoring method is often criticized on the fact that the gas temperatures in motoring are much lower than that in fired engines, hence might reflect in a different FMEP measurement. In the work presented in SAE paper 2019-01-0930, Argon w…
