A novel thermodynamically consistent cohesive-frictional model for the analysis of interface degradation and failure under either monotonic quasi-static loading or cyclic loading in low-cycle fatigue problems is proposed. Starting from the definition of a suitable Helmholtz energy density function, a phenomenological interface model is developed in the framework of plasticity and damage mechanics. This work deals with the discretization of single-phase Darcy flows in fractured and deformable porous media, including frictional contact at the matrix-fracture interfaces. Fractures are described as a network of planar surfaces leading to so-called mixed dimensional models. Small displacements and a linear poro-elastic behavior are considered in the matrix. The paper presents a technique to identify parameters of the LuGre dynamic friction model applied to represent mechanical losses of an induction motor. This method is based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) system identification which is able to estimate parameters of nonlinear mathematical models. Within the presented approach, the network is first trained to associate model parameters with predicted friction torque, being given the reference motor speed. When this process completes, the inverse operation is performed and the network delivers estimated parameters of the model based on the reference friction torque. The hypothesis of the minimum work of Merchant is applied to materials with different yield points in traction and in simple compression on the assumption that these materials yield in accordance with the paraboloid yield-criterion. The experimental data obtained from cutting tests like those described in this paper may apparently be in good agreement with theoretical results. But closer examination reveals that the values of the shear angle φ depend largely on the cutting speed and on the feed p. r. All relationship between φ and (λ — γ) (difference between the friction angle on the rake face and the rake angle) must therefore take in account the influence of the above variables.

In-process tool force and rotation variation to control sheet thickness change in friction stir welding of magnesium alloys

Two different in-process control strategies, developed in order to produce sound joints in AZ31 magnesium alloy by Friction Stir Welding on sheet blanks with a non-uniform thickness, are presented and compared. To this purpose, sheets with dip or hump were machined and welded by either changing the rotational speed or the tool plunging in order to keep constant the vertical force occurring during welding. The mechanical strength of the joints was measured in the zones where the sheets before welding were characterised by different thicknesses.
