Steviol Glycosides Stability after Pulsed Electric Technologies and Ultrasounds Treatments in Fruit Juice Blend Sweetened with Stevia rebaudiana
2016
Stevia rebaudiana bartoni due to its high content in steviol glycosides and the ability to serve as a natural antimicrobial to complement the effectiveness of pulsed electric technologies for food preservation, has been used more frequently to improve sensorial properties of liquid foods.
A xyloglucan from persimmon fruit cell walls
1998
Persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.) fruit cell walls have been shown to contain a high proportion of xyloglucan. This hemicellulosic polysaccharide appears to play a crucial role in the softening process that accompanies fruit ripening. In the present work, xyloglucan from persimmon fruit cell walls was extracted, purified and chemically characterized from alkali-extracted hemicelluloses. Monosaccharide analysis of purified xyloglucan showed a molar ratio of Glc:Xyl:Gal:Fuc of 10.0:6.0:3.4:1.4. Linkage analysis showed a high proportion of terminal residues, indicating a low degree of polymerization of side-chains.
Autophagic cell death induced by Litchi fruit extracts in human colon cancer cells.
2016
Litchi chinensis is a tropical fruit which cultivation has been recently introduced in Sicily. Some findings have shown that Litchi extracts display antitumor effects but the underlying mechanisms have not been elucidated. This study focuses on the effects of Litchi hydro-alcoholic extracts in colorectal cancer cells. The results indicated that Litchi exocarp (peel), mesocarp (pulp) and endocarp (seeds) extracts reduce the viability of HT-29 colon cancer cells in a dose dependent manner. This effect was accompanied with G2/M arrest of the cell cycle followed by cell death. Interestingly, exocarp and endocarp extracts triggered an autophagic response in the first phase of treatment (16-24h) …
Perception of quality and complexity in wine and their links to varietal typicality: An investigation involving Pinot noir wine and professional tast…
2020
International audience; Quality and complexity are abstract terms employed frequently to describe a wine's overall attributes. In the present study, we investigated: (i) attributes driving wine professionals' judgments of quality and complexity in Pinot noir wines; (ii) the relation between these two abstract concepts; and (iii) association of each concept with varietal typicality. Twenty-two wine professionals evaluated 18 New Zealand Pinot noir wines in both clear and opaque glassware via two sensory tasks, a descriptive rating task and an 8-attribute, perceived complexity questionnaire. Sensory data were associated with wine UV-spectrophotometry colour measures to aid interpretation of t…
I RUSTICA MUNERA DI CORIDONE (A MARGINE DI VERG., ECL. 2, 45-55)
2022
Within the second Eclogue, the rustica munera offered by Corydon to Alexis (vv. 45-55), while obeying a somewhat conventional plot, reveal a complex intertextual stratigraphy. Unexpectedly, δωροφόροι of di vine rank join the shepherd in paying homage to the ephebe, bringing bas kets full of lilies and a garland of flowers and herbs, to which fruits and branches of laurel and myrtle will be added. The tradition of the rubrics of στεφανωτικὰ ἄνθη, testified by Athenaeus in the 15th book of the Deipno sophistae, allows us to test both the rate of conventionality of the entire ecphrasis, and the variations made by Vergil to the lists of flowers and herbs, as well as Greek poetry as well as genr…
The coast of Altavilla Milicia east of Palermo. Story of a forgotten coastal landscape between illegal building, architectural-landscape emergencies …
2019
LOW VIGOR PEACH × ALMOND ROOTSTOCKS FOR INTENSIVE PEACH PLANTINGS IN MEDITERRANEAN ENVIRONMENTS
2014
A three-year trial was carried out to evaluate the vegetative and productive performance of five peach rootstocks of varied vigor. The study was conducted in south-western Sicily using 45 V-trained trees of 'Tropic Snow' peach planted in 2005 and grafted on GF677 and four low-vigor rootstocks selected at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences, University of Pisa, namely IS5/8 (Polluce), IS5/19 (Castore), IS5/23, IS5/29. Trunk circumference, winter and summer pruning weight, number and mass of fruit were recorded from 2010 to 2012. All IS selections reduced trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA) and pruning weight compared to GF677 with IS5/23 inducing the highest reducti…
