Abstract Results are presented on scubadiving investigations carried out on thermal manifestations in the area of Panarea (Aeolian Islands). The area investigated falls inside a caldera which extends from the main island to the group of islets located to the northeast. The distribution of the gaseous manifestations is regulated by the NE-SW, NW-SE and N-S regional tectonic directrices, through which the more recent basic magma intruded, giving rise to dikes and pillow lavas. f O 2 -temperature relation of the gases sampled in the investigated area was calculated to be: log f O 2 = 11−24,593/ T which indicates that a buffering mechanism acted on the gases as they cooled down during their asc…
Geochemical modeling of mixing between magmatic and hydrothermal gases: the case of Vulcano Island, Italy

Abstract In this study we present a geochemical approach to model the mixing of magmatic and hydrothermal gases. Our model is based on a rigorous formulation of a perfectly dimensioned system of mass and energy balance equations. Inputs of the equation set are the H2O and CO2 content and gas emission temperature at the surface, together with some constraints gained from the chemical–physical features of the hydrothermal system. The output data give the composition of magmatic gas, mixing fractions and temperatures of gas mixtures in the mixing zone. Abstract Passive samplers were used to measure the atmospheric concentrations of SO 2 naturally emitted at three volcanoes in Italy (Etna, Vulcano and Stromboli) and of H 2 S naturally emitted at three volcanic/geothermal areas in Greece (Milos, Santorini and Nisyros). The measured concentrations and dispersion patterns varied with the strength of the source (open conduits or fumaroles), the meteorological conditions and the area topography. At Etna, Vulcano and Stromboli, SO 2 concentrations reach values that are dangerous to people affected by bronchial asthma or lung diseases (> 1000 μg m − 3 ). International audience; Accurate and precisely located self-potential (SP), temperature (T) and COi measurements were carried out in the summit area of Stromboli along 72 straight profiles. SP data were acquired every metre and T data every 2.5 m. CO2 concentrations were acquired with the same density as T, but only along seven profiles. The high density of data and the diversity of the measured parameters allows us to study structures and phenomena at a scale rarely investigated. The shallow summit hydrothermal activity (Pizzo-Fossa area) is indicated by large positive SP, T and COi anomalies. Abstract Hydrothermal systems with active surface expressions are important natural source of atmospheric mercury. Here we report on the first simultaneous assessment of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and major volatiles (H2S and CO2) fluxes from the fumarolic system of Pisciarelli, currently the most active at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc), Naples (Italy). This was achieved via a GPS-synchronized Lumex and MultiGAS survey which extends similar investigations reported elsewhere. GEM concentrations measured in the fumarolic emissions were consistently above background air level close to the degassing area (mean ~ 8 ± 3 ng m−3 on average) and ranged up to 12,000 ng m−3. AbstractThe South Sandwich Volcanic Arc is one of the most remote and enigmatic arcs on Earth. Sporadic observations from rare cloud-free satellite images—and even rarer in situ reports—provide glimpses into a dynamic arc system characterised by persistent gas emissions and frequent eruptive activity. Abstract Quantifying mercury (Hg) emissions from active volcanoes is of particular interest for better constraining the global cycle and environmental impact of this highly toxic element. Here we report on the abundance of total gaseous (TGM = Hg 0 (g) + Hg II (g) ) and particulate (Hg (p) ) mercury in the summit gas emissions of La Soufriere andesitic volcano (Guadeloupe island, Lesser Antilles), where enhanced degassing of mixed hydrothermal-magmatic volatiles has been occurring since 1992 from the Southern summit crater. Measurements of CO2 flux from the ground were periodically carried out on the island of Vulcano (Aeolian Islands, Italy) between 1984 and 1994. Three high-flux areas were identified at the foot of the volcanic cone (La Fossa), either inside or very close to the main village. Effect of the choice of the sampling grid was evaluated. A different sampling grid resulted in similar distribution patterns, but with different CO2 fluxes. Therefore, the absolute estimate of the total flux from the investigated area includes a large degree of uncertainty, but repeated measurements with permanent sampling sites are accurate and can detect small changes. Abstract Water samples from eight wells in the Vulcano Porto area and fumarole steam from the crater of Vulcano (Southern Italy) were collected at monthly intervals over a two-year period from February 1987 to January 1989. Samples of bulk precipitation were also collected in three points at Vulcano Porto and Vulcano Piano (island of Vulcano) and Castroreale (Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily), again at monthly intervals. The weighted mean isotopic composition of rain water on Vulcano is δ D =−32‰ , and δ D 18 O =−6.4‰ .
