Biomarkers Related to Synaptic Dysfunction to Discriminate Alzheimer’s Disease from Other Neurological Disorders

2022

Recently, the synaptic proteins neurogranin (Ng) and α-synuclein (α-Syn) have attracted scientific interest as potential biomarkers for synaptic dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we measured the CSF Ng and α-Syn concentrations in patients affected by AD (n = 69), non-AD neurodegenerative disorders (n-AD = 50) and non-degenerative disorders (n-ND, n = 98). The concentrations of CSF Ng and α-Syn were significantly higher in AD than in n-AD and n-ND. Moreover, the Aβ42/Ng and Aβ42/α-Syn ratios showed statistically significant differences between groups and discriminated AD patients from n-AD patients, better than Ng or α-Syn…

Using ‘Ambient Intelligence’ for Compensating Intellectual Difficulties of People with Severe Learning Difficulties and/or Autistic Spectrum Disorders

2004

This paper describes a set of services and software created so that what is called ‘ambient intelligence’ would compensate for the ‘intellectual difficulties’ that people from this collective have. Existing concepts and standards of ambient intelligence are strongly reinforced through the use of the exact current user’s position as a key factor to calculate how the ‘digital home’ or any ‘digital environment’ behaves at every moment. This will be obtained using both Wi-Fi personal locators (embedded in necklaces or bracelets) and Wi-Fi communication from the PDA. This mix, together with individual capabilities and preferences, makes the development of a wide range of services possible when c…

LTE-based passive radars and applications: a review

2021

This paper provides an overview of the most recent passive radars based on long-term evolution (LTE). To begin, this paper investigates the various characteristics and requirements of 4 G LTE signals for radar, taking performance aspects such as range, velocity, range resolution, and velocity resolution into account. An ambiguity function analysis is performed on a measured LTE signal using the synchronization and reference signal components to evaluate key performance parameters such as Doppler and range characteristics. We also discuss how LTE passive radar can be used in a variety of applications. The detailed analysis of the LTE downlink signal, its structural overview, and the effect o…

Blue luminescent amino-functionalized graphene quantum dots as a responsive material for potential detection of metal ions and malathion

2022

Large amounts of hazardous and toxic substances in the environment require non-toxic, cheap, easy, rapid, and sensitive methods for their detection. Blue luminescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were produced by electrochemical cleavage of graphite electrodes followed by gamma irradiation in the presence of ethylenediamine (EDA). Modified dots were able to detect metal ions (Co2+, Pd2+, Fe3+) due to photoluminescence quenching. The highest sensitivity was detected for the sample irradiated at a dose of 25 kGy. The limits of detection (LODs) were 1.79, 2.55, and 0.66 μmol L−1 for Co2+, Fe3+, and Pd2+, respectively. It was observed that GQDs irradiated at 200 kGy act as an ultra-sensitive tur…

A procedure to calculate the I–V characteristics of thin-film photovoltaic modules using an explicit rational form

2015

Abstract Accurate models of the electrical behaviour of photovoltaic modules are effective tools for system design. One or two diode equivalent circuits have been widely used even though some mathematical difficulties were found dealing with implicit equations. In this paper, a new model based on a simple rational function, which does not contain any implicit exponential form, is presented. The model was conceived in order to be used with thin-film photovoltaic modules, whose current–voltage curves are characterised by very smooth shapes. The parameters of the model are evaluated by means of the derivatives of the issued characteristics in the short circuit and open circuit points at standa…

Effects of pathogen reduction systems on platelet microRNAs, mRNAs, activation, and function

2014

Pathogen reduction (PR) systems for platelets, based on chemically induced cross-linking and inactivation of nucleic acids, potentially prevent transfusion transmission of infectious agents, but can increase clinically significant bleeding in some clinical studies. Here, we documented the effects of PR systems on microRNA and mRNA levels of platelets stored in the blood bank, and assessed their impact on platelet activation and function. Unlike platelets subjected to gamma irradiation or stored in additive solution, platelets treated with Intercept (amotosalen + ultraviolet-A [UVA] light) exhibited significantly reduced levels of 6 of the 11 microRNAs, and 2 of the 3 anti-apoptotic mRNAs (B…

Comparison of the functional responses of invasive and native amphipods

2008

While we can usually understand the impacts of invasive species on recipient communities, invasion biology lacks methodologies that are potentially more predictive. Such tools should ideally be straightforward and widely applicable. Here, we explore an approach that compares the functional responses (FRs) of invader and native amphipod crustaceans. Dikerogammarus villosus is a Ponto-Caspian amphipod currently invading Europe and poised to invade North America. Compared with other amphipods that it actively replaces in freshwaters, D. villosus exhibited significantly greater predation, consuming significantly more prey with a higher type II FR. This corroborates the known dramatic field imp…

A modified ansatz for explicitly correlated coupled-cluster wave functions that is suitable for response theory

2009

A modified ansatz for explicitly correlated coupled-cluster wave functions with a single correlation factor is set forward. It is based on the fixed amplitude ansatz of Ten-no [Chem. Phys. Lett. 398, 56 (2004)] to which an extra term is added that allows for the explicitly correlated description of singly excited configurations. The new approach has been implemented for coupled-cluster singles and doubles with the aid of automated techniques. Numerical results are presented for vertical excitation energies, and ground and excited state equilibrium distances and harmonic frequencies of diatomics. The new approach is shown to provide a nearly unbiased description of ground and predominantly s…
