Omega-3 rich foods: Durum wheat spaghetti fortified with Portulaca oleracea

Abstract Portulaca oleracea is an annual succulent herb (purslane) with high antioxidant properties and high content of essential ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acids, ascorbic acid, α-tocopherol and β-carotene. In the present study, sensorial and chemical analyses of uncooked and cooked durum wheat pasta fortified with purslane from three different Sicilian areas and at three different concentrations (5, 10 and 15%) were estimated. The sensorial analysis showed that the scores of the overall acceptance decreased considerably in pasta with 15% purslane, while consumers appreciated pasta samples with 10% purslane. Abstract New complexes of the type R 3 PAuL or (R 3 PAu) 2 (μ-L) where R=ethyl or phenyl and L=6-thioguanine, 2, 6- dithioxanthine, 2, 4-dithiouracil and/or dithioerythritol have been prepared. These complexes have been identified by using elemental analysis, 1 H, 13 C and 31 P NMR spectroscopy. The structures have been proposed based on these spectroscopic studies. Sulfur appears to be the binding site in disubstituted complexes of 2, 4-dithiouracil and 1, 4-dithioerythritol, while the phosphine gold( I ) moieties appear to be S and N bonded in 2, 6-dithioxanthine and 6-thioguanine. The potential use of these complexes as antitumor drugs is discussed.

Historical data and current research in Italy reveal the permanent interest of people and scientists toward the importance of fungi as functional food and medicine. This chapter reports the main studies on medicinal mushrooms carried out by Italian researchers on the antibacterial activity, the characterization of β-glucans content, antitumor activity, Alzheimer’s disease, characterization of bioactive compounds, antimicrobial activity, dietary supplementation, chemical contents, and animal health. Currently, in vitro experiments are prevalent with respect to clinical trials on human and animals.

Music therapists use guided affect regulation in the treatment of mood disorders. However, self-directed uses of music in affect regulation are not fully understood. Some uses of music may have negative effects on mental health, as can non music regulation strategies, such as rumination. Echocardiographic and angiographic evaluation of left ventricular function during percutaneous transluminal aortic valvuloplasty.

Transesophageal echocardiography was used to study the effect of the balloon inflation on left ventricular function in 20 patients with critical aortic stenosis undergoing balloon valvuloplasty. Balloon inflation caused an increase of end-diastolic (15% to 34%) and end-systolic (57% to 72%) left ventricular volume. Left ventricular wall stress increased from 30 +/- 10 x 10(3) dyn/cm2 at diastole and 121 +/- 40 x 10(3) dyn/cm2 at systole to 44 +/- 11 x 10(3) dyn/cm2 and 191 +/- 55 x 10(3) dyn/cm2, respectively, when the balloon was inflated (P less than 0.05). Turbulent regurgitant jet across the mitral valve increased from 15 +/- 2% to 25 +/- 3% during balloon inflation (P less than 0.01). …
