2011
A diagnosis made in 2008 on a zone measuring 98 ha north-east of Chalon-sur-Saône has revealed a lane, a small funerary zone and four occupied areas incorporating buildings used for domestic and agricultural (barn) purposes used during the last two thirds of the 3rd century and the first half of the 4th century ad. The linear distribution of the remains over a distance of 1300 metres has stimulated lively interest and poses several questions regarding the exact nature of the occupation. One of the hypotheses put forward is that of a small agglomeration associated with a possible estate. Analysis relies on studies of ceramic and metallic objects and examination of sets of coins
Profilo dell'attività scientifica di Fabiola Ardizzone
2018
The paper traces the scientific activity of Fab…
Romanization of Funerary Rituals in Oretania: The Tomb 1 of the Cemetery of the Cerro de las Cabezas (Valdepeñas, Ciudad Real, Spain)
2017
A funerary perspective on the Bell Beaker period in the Wester Mediterranean Reading the social context of individual burials at La Vital (Gandia, Va…
2013
[EN] The discussion about social dynamics in recent Pre- history is supported by the study of funerary practices. The presence and significance of individual and collec- tive burials in Final Neolithic/Chalcolithic societies in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula provides new evi- dence for the debate concerning the emergence of social inequalities in this region. Our contribution is based on the recent discovery and excavation of several individual pit burials in domestic contexts at the site of La Vital (Gandía, Valencia). The particularities of the identified burials (different ritual episodes) and their content (Bell Beaker pottery, metal objects, animal offerings) together with an …

The Walking Dead: Cross-Channel connections and Funerary Practices c. 1600-1200 BC
2018
Session XXXII-4. Cross-channel connections from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age; International audience; The Middle /early Late Bronze Age (c. 1600-1200 BC) in the cross-channel region is invariably understood through the many close connections evidenced by new metal technologies and object types. These relationships tend to be interpreted as either continuities or developments from Early Bronze Age (c. 2200-1600 BC) cross-channel communities. However, whilst scholarship on the cross-channel connections between Early Bronze Age communities has tended to focus on funerary practices, there been no recent or comparable re-evaluation of cross-channel Middle /Late Bronze Age funerary practices. …
Dioniso a Centuripe: iconografia ‘teatrale’ e imagerie dionisiaca in contesto funerario
2021
The purpose of the paper is to bring together and to assess some strands of the funerary imagery elaborated in Centuripe (Sicily) in 3rd-1st centuries B.C., that until recently have been viewed in total isolation from each other. Dionysian themes and motifs have been variously identified in the local polychrome pottery, since the discovery, early in 20th century, of two impressive vases representing Dionysos himself in a relaxed pose; as opposed to the prevailing “bacchic-orphic” explanation, however, from the second half of past century the nuptial theme was considered to be the most important of the Centuripan vase inventory; finally, some scholars have argued that the repertory was not s…
2017
We present the finding of an Iberian stele in the village of Atzeneta del Maestrat (Castellón). It is decorated with a cuirass disc on its front face, motif that is represented for the first time in the Iberian steles of the Valencian Country. Due to its characteristics, we connect this monument with the group of steles of Bajo Aragón, where we find the same motives in villages such as Vallderoures and Cretas (Teruel).
Death and Rebirth: Images of Death in Sicily
2015
Photographs were often taken during funerary ceremonies in Sicily. Local photographers were commissioned to document funerals as if they were christenings, communions or wedding ceremonies; and it is no mere coincidence that in funeral portraits the relatives arranged around the coffin assumed postures similar to those seen in photos of festivities. This tradition of taking photos during such “mixed occasions” gives the images a profound significance and highlights the archaic roots of the popular ideology of death as a continuum of life.
