Evolutionary advantage conferred by an eukaryote-to-eukaryote gene transfer event in wine yeasts

Although an increasing number of horizontal gene transfers have been reported in eukaryotes, experimental evidence for their adaptive value is lacking. Here, we report the recent transfer of a 158-kb genomic region between Torulaspora microellipsoides and Saccharomyces cerevisiae wine yeasts or closely related strains. This genomic region has undergone several rearrangements in S. cerevisiae strains, including gene loss and gene conversion between two tandemly duplicated FOT genes encoding oligopeptide transporters. Comparison of the mycelial growth of some Phellinus spp. isolates on different agar media

Celem pracy było określenie i porównanie wzrostu grzybni Phellinus spp. Użyto dziewięciu izolatów z gatunków: P. torulosus, P. robustus, P. pomaceus, P. igniarius i P. pini, które uprawiano na czterech różnych pożywkach agarowych, aby określić ich przydatność dla rodzaju Phellinus. Zastosowano pożywki: ziemniaczano-glukozową (PDA), maltozową (MEA), pszenną (WA) i trocinowo-pszenną (SWA). Po 10 dniach inkubacji w 25°C zmierzono średnice kolonii. In order to control fungal colonization and the related deterioration process of cultural objects, several chemical compounds are actually utilised. These products generally are toxic, not biodegradable and persisting for long time in the environment, also acting on not-targeted biological systems. Hydrodistillation of the flowers (BpFl) of and fruits (BpFr) of Bupleurum fontanesii Guss. ex Caruel gave two oils that were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The main components were α-elemol (16.7%), caryophyllene oxide (16.4%) and heptacosane (15.9%) in BpFl, and spathulenol (16.8%), caryophylladienol I (13.2%) and α-elemol (12.8%) in BpFr. A good antimicrobial activity against several microorganisms, including Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus niger, all infesting historical art craft, was also determined.
