Semi-automatic Brain Lesion Segmentation in Gamma Knife Treatments Using an Unsupervised Fuzzy C-Means Clustering Technique

2016

MR Imaging is being increasingly used in radiation treatment planning as well as for staging and assessing tumor response. Leksell Gamma Knife (R) is a device for stereotactic neuro-radiosurgery to deal with inaccessible or insufficiently treated lesions with traditional surgery or radiotherapy. The target to be treated with radiation beams is currently contoured through slice-by-slice manual segmentation on MR images. This procedure is time consuming and operator-dependent. Segmentation result repeatability may be ensured only by using automatic/semi-automatic methods with the clinicians supporting the planning phase. In this paper a semi-automatic segmentation method, based on an unsuperv…

Conventional and fuzzy comparisons of large scale land cover products: Application to CORINE, GLC2000, MODIS and GlobCover in Europe

2012

One of the major drawbacks of land cover products is the lack of interoperability among them. Since their development was driven by different national or international initiatives, they were developed for different purposes and hold diverse technical characteristics. Thus, comparison among products and quality monitoring is necessary in assessing their usefulness. This paper provides a methodology to compare global land cover maps that allows for differences in legend definitions among products. Two different approaches were considered for map comparison, a Boolean approach and a new methodology based on fuzzy set theory in which the Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) acted as a genera…

The Implications of Fuzzy Logic in Qualitative Mathematical Modeling of Some Key Aspects Related to the Sustainability Issues around “Roşia Montană P…

2013

Abstract This paper aims to address in terms of fuzzy logic the qualitative mathematical modeling of some key aspects that implies ensuring of sustainability within “Rosia Montana mining Project”, both from the business itself perspective, as well as from the community and ecological ones. The proposed fuzzy methodology is also very useful and can be successfully applied for any company that evolves in uncertainty and ambiguity conditions and within which the decisional factor reasoning is subjective, due to itself abstract thinking of human being in this kind of situations, which often manifests itself through qualitative linguistic values. In this context, the development of a fuzzy metho…

Fully automatic multispectral MR image segmentation of prostate gland based on the fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm

2017

Prostate imaging is a very critical issue in the clinical practice, especially for diagnosis, therapy, and staging of prostate cancer. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can provide both morphologic and complementary functional information of tumor region. Manual detection and segmentation of prostate gland and carcinoma on multispectral MRI data is not easily practicable in the clinical routine because of the long times required by experienced radiologists to analyze several types of imaging data. In this paper, a fully automatic image segmentation method, exploiting an unsupervised Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering technique for multispectral T1-weighted and T2-weighted MRI data processing, is…

Fuzzy Logic based model for self-optimizing energy consumption in IoT environment

2021

Energy optimization is essential in IoT environments due to energy constraints for some IoT components. In fact, energy consumption has a direct impact on IoT system lifetime, which represents an important Quality of Service (QoS) parameter for IoT environments. In order to extend the IoT system lifetime, energy consumption optimization should be considered in several IoT components. In this paper, we specify an energy self-optimizing mechanism allowing to minimize data transmission energy consumption of IoT objects. This mechanism enables selecting specific objects to send the desired data while minimizing the energy consumed for the corresponding communication. Our proposal is made of a M…

Minimizing uncertainties with improved power system stability using wide area fuzzy-2 logic based damping controller

2017

In this paper, a centralized Wide Area Damping Controller (WADC) is synthesized based on Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic controller. The disturbance is symbolized as distributed in the network with application of momentarily disturbance to the generator in area 1 for few cycles. The response of tie-line active power flow from area-1 to area-2, rotor speed change, rotor mechanical angle deviation, positive sequence voltage are examined by considering the test system with conventional PSS (CPSS), fuzzy type-1 based controller and fuzzy type-2 based controller. The proposed controller performance is analyzed and compared with fuzzy type-1 based controller and CPSS. The simulation results are used …

Fuzzy FMECA analysis of radioactive gas recovery system in the SPES experimental facility

2021

Abstract Selective Production of Exotic Species is an innovative plant for advanced nuclear physic studies. A radioactive beam, generated by using an UCx target-ion source system, is ionized, selected and accelerated for experimental objects. Very high vacuum conditions and appropriate safety systems to storage exhaust gases are required to avoid radiological risk for operators and people. In this paper, Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis of a preliminary design of high activity gas recovery system is performed by using a modified Fuzzy Risk Priority Number to rank the most critical components in terms of failures and human errors. Comparisons between fuzzy approach and classic…

Three-dimensional Fuzzy Kernel Regression framework for registration of medical volume data

2013

Abstract In this work a general framework for non-rigid 3D medical image registration is presented. It relies on two pattern recognition techniques: kernel regression and fuzzy c-means clustering. The paper provides theoretic explanation, details the framework, and illustrates its application to implement three registration algorithms for CT/MR volumes as well as single 2D slices. The first two algorithms are landmark-based approaches, while the third one is an area-based technique. The last approach is based on iterative hierarchical volume subdivision, and maximization of mutual information. Moreover, a high performance Nvidia CUDA based implementation of the algorithm is presented. The f…

From Lattice Valued Theories to Lattice Valued Analysis

2015

We claim and justify that the future of a fuzzy logic is in the interconnection of various well-developed theories. We are focused on a lattice valued analysis that unifies the treatments of atomic elements, sets of atomic elements, functions between sets of atomic elements and their properties. We clarify the relationship between a fuzzy function and its ordinary core. We discuss the property of continuity of a fuzzy function in a lattice valued topology.
