Optimal implementation of neural activation functions in programmable logic using fuzzy logic

2006

Abstract This work presents a methodology for implementing neural activation function in programmable logic using tools from fuzzy logic. This methodology will allow implementing these intrinsic non-linear functions using comparators and simple linear modellers, easily implemented in programmable logic. This work is particularized to the case of a hyperbolic tangent, the most common function in neural models, showing the excellent results yielded with the proposed approximation.

A new approach to fuzzy sets: Application to the design of nonlinear time series, symmetry-breaking patterns, and non-sinusoidal limit-cycle oscillat…

2019

Abstract It is shown that characteristic functions of sets can be made fuzzy by means of the B κ -function, recently introduced by the author, where the fuzziness parameter κ ∈ R controls how much a fuzzy set deviates from the crisp set obtained in the limit κ → 0. As applications, we present first a general expression for a switching function that may be of interest in electrical engineering and in the design of nonlinear time series. We then introduce another general expression that allows wallpaper and frieze patterns for every possible planar symmetry group (besides patterns typical of quasicrystals) to be designed. We show how the fuzziness parameter κ plays an analogous role to temper…

An integrated fuzzy-stochastic model for revenue management: The hospitality industry case

2016

Revenue management aims at improving the performance of an organization by selling the right product/service to the right customer at the right time. This task is very dependent on uncontrollable external factors. In the hospitality industry, rooms of the hotel represent perishable assets and fixed capacities at the same time. Therefore, in the case of a stochastic process for customers calling in reservations prior to a particular booking date, a common problem for hotels is to devise a policy for maximizing the total expected profit conditional on the set of bookings. We propose a fuzzy model for the hotel revenue management under an uncertain and vague environment. Fuzziness of objectiv…

A combined fuzzy-SEM evaluation approach to identify the key drivers of the academic library service quality in the digital technology era: An empiri…

2017

A conceptual model of the Academic Library (AL) service quality is hypothesized in the present article, and then validated and analyzed by a novel evaluation approach. Specifically, the conceptual model integrates the fundamental attributes of the canonical AL service together with those more relevant of the new and widely considered AL Electronic Service (e-services). As concerns the evaluation approach, it incorporates the Fuzzy Sets Theory (FST) so as to deal with the students' uncertainty over their own judgments on the AL service quality and a Structural Equation Model (SEM) to validate the conceptual model and to determine the key drivers of the AL service quality. The effectiveness o…

Multiobjective service restoration in distribution networks using an evolutionary approach and fuzzy sets

2000

Abstract In this article, the service restoration (SR) problem in electrical distribution networks is dealt with using an evolutionary strategy (ES) with a fuzzy definition of the conflicting objectives. The normal operation status allows the remote control of tie-switches, of capacitor banks and load connection. When a permanent fault occurs, the same remote control actions can be performed with the aim of restoring the service in the concerned areas. The status of these remotely controllable elements is the boolean optimisation variables for the SR problem. Besides this, here the SR problem is dealt with in a multiple objectives (MO) formulation. Indeed, the power losses’ term is consider…

DINESERV along with fuzzy hierarchical TOPSIS to support the best practices observation and service quality improvement in the restaurant context

2019

Abstract The present work proposes a new Multi-Criteria-Decision-Analysis (MCDA)-based approach integrating the DINESERV model along with the hierarchical TOPSIS method as measurement tool for evaluating quality in the restaurant services context. More in detail, on the basis of the DINESERV theoretical framework of the restaurant service quality, hierarchical TOPSIS is applied to compare quality of restaurant services. Actually, due to the prioritization process of hierarchical TOPSIS, investigated services providers are consistently and effectively assessed against criteria and sub-criteria of DINESERV, so allowing the identification of both best practices and weaknesses of delivered serv…

Fuzzy-neural Web switch supporting differentiated service

2006

New designs of the Web switches must incorporate a client-and-server-aware adaptive dispatching algorithm to be able to optimize multiple static and dynamic services providing quality of service and service differentiation. This paper presents such an algorithm called FNRD (Fuzzy-Neural Request Distribution) which operates at layer-7 of the OSI protocol stack. This algorithm assigns each incoming request to the server with the least expected response time estimated using the fuzzy approach. FNRD has ability for learning and adaptation by means of a neural network feedback loop. We demonstrate through the simulations that our dispatching policy is more effective than state-of-the-art layer-7…

Expert control of DO in the aerobic reactor of an activated sludge process

2000

Abstract An expert control structure is proposed for the control of dissolved oxygen (DO) in a Nitrification Denitrification Biological Excess Phosphorus Removal (NDBEPR) plant to account for the several processes that are influenced by the DO concentration in the aerator. In the scheme a supervisory fuzzy controller determines the set point of an inner DO control loop where an Adaptive Robust Generic Model Control (ARGMC) controller is used. The fuzzy supervisory control has a hierarchical structure. Off-line measurements of biological parameters of influent and effluent streams can be used to periodically update the set points of the fuzzy controllers. The complete control scheme has been…

Developing a scuba trail vulnerability index (STVI): a case study from a Mediterranean MPA

2008

Scuba diving is now one of the major form of commercial use of marine protected areas (MPAs) around the world and the control of its potential impacts on the marine environment represents a fundamental key to manage this recreational activity in highly dived areas. A potential tool to tackle such issues has been thought to be the definition of a value of recreational carrying capacity of an area, but this approach has been rarely considered management-effective. Therefore, the first step for effectively managing scuba-diving should be ‘bottom-up’: characterizing the benthic communities potentially affected by diving and evaluating their vulnerability. Aim of this paper is to propose a tool …

A Fuzzy One Class Classifier for Multi Layer Model

2009

The paper describes an application of a fuzzy one-class classifier (FOC ) for the identification of different signal patterns embedded in a noise structured background. The classification phase is applied after a preprocessing phase based on a Multi Layer Model (MLM ) that provides a preliminary signal segmentation in an interval feature space. The FOC has been tested on synthetic and real microarray data in the specific problem of DNA nucleosome and linker regions identification. Results have shown, in both cases, a good recognition rate.
