Abstract Drying, especially rotary drying is without doubt one of the oldest and most common unit operations in industries. It is a very complex non-linear process including the movement of solids in addition to thermal drying. This means that both the modelling and control of a rotary dryer is difficult with conventional methods. Abstract: Evaluation and self-evaluation procedures are commonly used in educational institutions to measure education services and research performance. This chapter describes the main opportunities that evaluation-based approaches can produce to support processes of design and continuous quality improvement in higher education institutions in the light of recent normative measures in Italy to address quality aspects of education services. Subsequently, a new approach – based on the ServQual conceptual model – that evaluates education services is used to carry out a strategic analysis of education services at the management engineering program at the University of Palermo, Italy.

Abstract The aim of the paper is to present the application of type-2 fuzzy logic controllers (T2FLCs) to the control of a fed-batch fermentation reactor in which the penicillin production is carried out. The performance of the control system using T2FLCs is compared by simulation with that of a control system using type-1 fuzzy logic controllers (T1FLCs). The non linear model used for the simulation study is an unstructured model characterized by the presence of non linearities, parameter uncertainty and measurement noise. In this paper, several tuning algorithms, specifically ITAE, IMC and Cohen and Coon, were applied in order to tune an activated sludge aeration PID controller. Performance results of these controllers were compared by simulation with those obtained by using a nonlinear fuzzy PID controller. In order to design this controller, a trial and error procedure was used to determine, as a function of error at current time and at a previous time, sets of parameters (including controller gain, integral time and derivative time) which achieve satisfactory response of a PID controller actuating over the aeration process. A new fuzzy adaptive motion control system including on-line extended Kalman''s filter (EKF) for wheeled underactuated cars with non-holonomic constraints on the motion is presented. The presence of parametric uncertainties in the kinematics and in the dynamics is treated using suitable differential adaptation laws. We merge adaptive control with fuzzy inference system. Method for designing PI-type fuzzy controllers for induction motor drives

The paper illustrates a new systematic method for designing PI-type fuzzy controllers for direct field-oriented controlled induction motor drives. First, linear and decoupled models expressing the dynamics of speed, rotor flux, direct and inquadrature stator currents are derived using a nonlinear static compensator and choosing convenient input variables. Then, to guide the dynamics of the above quantities, four conventional PI controllers are designed independently, choosing their bandwidths conveniently. The main objective of this work was to develop a controller for biogas production in continuous anaerobic fixed-bed reactors, which used effluent total volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentration as control input in order to prevent process acidification at closed loop. To this aim, a fuzzy-logic-based control system was developed, tuned and validated in an anaerobic fixed-bed reactor at pilot scale that treated industrial winery wastewater. This paper concerns with the measurement uncertainty estimation in the analog‐to‐digital conversion‐based instruments. By using an ad hoc developed software tool, the Monte Carlo method is applied in order to assess the uncertainties associated with the measurement results, overcoming the possible inapplicability of the pure theoretical approach prescribed in the ISO – “Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement”. By implementing the software tool in the measurement instruments, the proposed approach can be utilized in order to make the instrument itself able to auto‐estimate the measurement uncertainties.
