How often patients on insulin therapy measure postprandial glycemia and modify insulin doses accordingly? From an on-line survey in insulin-treated d…
2019
Abstract Introduction Controlling postprandial glycemia (PPG) is important to achieve optimal glycemic control, but few studies have evaluated how often is measured and evaluated. Objectives To evaluate how often patients on insulin therapy measure PPG and modify insulin doses accordantly. As secondary objectives, we evaluated the factors conditioning elevated PPG and associated issues. Material and methods Cross-sectional observational study based on a web-based survey from an unselected sample of adult insulin-treated patients. A p-value of Results 1251 patients (68% women, 38.9 ± 13 years [mean ± SD], body mass index (BMI) 24.2 ± 4.2 kg/m2, diabetes duration 17.4 ± 12.8 years, insulin d…
Evaluation of CGMS® During Rapid Blood Glucose Changes in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes
2006
CGMS (Medtronic Minimed, Duesseldorf, Germany) allows continuous glucose monitoring. Recent studies with invasive monitoring techniques revealed discrepancies in blood glucose measurements obtained from different anatomical sites compared with those from the fingertip. The aim of this study was to investigate the CGMS and a device for alternative site testing (AST) during dynamic blood glucose changes and to compare these results with fingertip measurements.Twelve patients with type 1 diabetes (seven women, five men; age, 33.3 +/- 8.7 years) received a 75-g oral glucose load. Insulin was applied intravenously (rapid glucose decline) or subcutaneously (moderate glucose decline) in a dosage b…
Involvement of caspase-3 and GD3 ganglioside in ceramide-induced apoptosis in Farber disease.
2000
Farber's disease (FD) is a rare genetic disorder caused by ceramidase deficiency, which results in ceramide accumulation in lung, liver, colon, skeletal muscle, cartilage, and bone. Although this disease has been symptomatically characterized, little is known about its molecular pathogenetic process. Because recent studies reported that ceramide accumulation induces GD3 ganglioside formation and apoptosis, we investigated, in tissue obtained via colonoscopy from seriously involved patients, the possible involvement of ceramide in FD colonocyte destruction. Histochemical and TUNEL analyses of paraffin-embedded sections revealed that 45 ± 4.3% of FD colonocytes showed morphological signs of …
Solitary necrotic nodules of the liver: cross-sectional imaging findings and follow-up in nine patients.
2008
OBJECTIVE. The purpose of our study was to retrospectively evaluate the sonographic, CT, and MRI findings (number, diameter, lobar location, depth from the hepatic capsule, and appearance of lesions) in a series of nine patients with pathologically proven solitary necrotic nodules of the liver and the natural evolution at follow-up in four of the nine patients.CONCLUSION. Solitary necrotic nodules are usually small, solitary lesions, mainly located under the liver capsule of the right lobe. They are hypoechoic on sonography, hypoattenuating on CT, have low signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted MRI with lack of enhancement after IV contrast administration, and at follow-up have a tend…
ICAM-1 and α3β1 expression by bronchial epithelial cells and theirin vitromodulation by inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators
2000
Background: Adhesion molecules are involved in inflammatory and repair processes of the bronchial epithelium. ICAM-1 is mainly involved in inflammatory reactions, whereas integrins, such as α3β1, are mainly involved in repair processes. Methods: Using bronchial biopsies from 10 asthmatics and eight controls, we first evaluated by immunohistochemistry expression of α3β1 and ICAM-1 in intact and damaged epithelium. Then, using the human pulmonary epithelial cell line WI-26 VA, we studied, by flow-cytometry, the modulation of ICAM-1 and α3β1 expression, and, by ELISA, the release of fibronectin by proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-5, and anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-4, TGF-β, an…
The Importance of Considering Alexithymia during Initial Stages of Intimate Partner Violence Interventions to Design Adjuvant Treatments
2019
Empirical evidence supports that individuals with alexithymia might be prone to certain types of violence, such as intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW). Moreover, considering that alexithymia is directly involved in behavior regulation, problems due to identifying and regulating emotional states might be postulated as responsible, at least in part, for the success of psychotherapeutic treatments designed for decreasing the future risk of reoffending. Therefore, we assessed whether alexithymia was a good predictor of the discontinuation of treatment (dropout) and the risk of recidivism during the initial stages of intervention in a sample of men convicted of IPVAW perpetration (n …
Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (CD30+/Ki-1+). Analysis of 35 cases followed at GISL centres
1995
Between January 1988 and June 1992, 35 patients with primary anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL)CD30+ were referred to one of the institutions participating in GISL (Gruppo Italiano per lo Studio dei Linformi). 16 patients were treated with ProMACE-CytaBOM, two with MACOP-B, one with CHOP and one with LSA2-L2. As of November 1990, all newly diagnosed patients were treated with MOPP/EBV/CAD hybrid. 27 (77%) cases of ALCL CD30+ and 8 (23%) cases of Hodgkin's-related (HR) lymphoma CD30+ were diagnosed. Extranodal disease was present in 22 cases (63%), and 8 patients (23%) had primary bone marrow involvement. Twenty-three complete remissions (CR) (66%), six partial remissions (PR) (17%) and s…
Distinct neural-behavioral correspondence within face processing and attention networks for the composite face effect
2022
The composite face effect (CFE) is recognized as a hallmark for holistic face processing, but our knowledge remains sparse about its cognitive and neural loci. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging with independent localizer and complete composite face task, we here investigated its neural-behavioral correspondence within face processing and attention networks. Complementing classical comparisons, we adopted a dimensional reduction approach to explore the core cognitive constructs of the behavioral CFE measurement. Our univariate analyses found an alignment effect in regions associated with both the extended face processing network and attention networks. Further representational simi…
Wording effects and the factor structure of the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12)
2021
The 12-item version of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) has become a popular screening instrument with which to measure general psychological health in different settings. Previous studies into the factorial structure of the GHQ-12 have mainly supported multifactor solutions, and only a few recent works have shown that the GHQ-12 was best represented by a single substantive factor when method effects associated with negatively worded items were considered. Confirmatory factor analysis was applied to compare competing measurement models from previous research, including correlated traits-correlated methods and correlated traits-correlated uniquenesses approaches, to obtain further e…
High-Speed Imaging Analysis of Register Transitions in Classically and Jazz-Trained Male Voices
2014
Background: Little data are available concerning register functions in different styles of singing such as classically or jazz-trained voices. Differences between registers seem to be much more audible in jazz singing than classical singing, and so we hypothesized that classically trained singers exhibit a smoother register transition, stemming from more regular vocal fold oscillation patterns. Methods: High-speed digital imaging (HSDI) was used for 19 male singers (10 jazz-trained singers, 9 classically trained) who performed a glissando from modal to falsetto register across the register transition. Vocal fold osc…
