Variation of student engagement between different algebra tasks

2018

In this study, we analyse how 7th grade students’ engagement during small group work differed in two consecutive algebra lessons: in the first lesson students solved equa-tions and in the second lesson they created equations for other small groups to solve. Data was collected by videorecording the work of two groups in both lessons. Through directed content analysis, categories indicating student engagement were formed based on previous research and refined during analysis. The analysis revealed a change from individual engagement to collaborative engagement between lessons and an increase in many passive students’ engagement. Task characteristics which may affect the type and amount of eng…

Social engagement from childhood to middle age and the effect of childhood socio-economic status on middle age social engagement: results from the Na…

2016

ABSTRACTSocial engagement has powerful effects on wellbeing, but variation in individual engagement throughout the lifecourse is wide. The trajectories may differ by gender and be affected by socio-economic status (SES). However, long-term development of social engagement is little studied and the effect of childhood SES on later-life social engagement remains obscure. We aimed to describe the social engagement development from childhood to middle age by gender and test the effect of childhood SES on middle age social engagement. Data (N=16,440, 51.3% male) are drawn from the on-going National Child Development Study, following British babies born in 1958. Social engagement was measured by …

W kierunku sztuki radykalnej polityczności. O filmach politycznych boliwijskiego kolektywu Ukamau

2020

Social media and consumer power : Opportunities and challenges for digital marketing activities

2021

Social Media (SM) have not only become an important part of daily life for individuals, governments and organisations but have also transformed the way people work, learn, consume and socially interact. There are many SM uses, posting frequencies and content preferences. User participation also varies from passive to more active behaviours, depending on the motivation for engagement in online conversations. From a marketing perspective, SM have redefined the traditional company - consumer relationship by progressively shifting power from marketing managers to consumers. Organisations are increasingly interested in understanding how SM can benefit (or harm) consumer-brand relationships, incr…

Friends, academic achievement, and school engagement during adolescence : A social network approach to peer influence and selection effects

2018

Abstract Peers become increasingly important socializing agents for academic behaviors and attitudes during adolescence. This study investigated peer influence and selection effects on adolescents' emotional (i.e., flow in schoolwork, school burnout, school value), cognitive (i.e., school effort), and behavioral (i.e., truancy) engagement in school. A social network approach was used to examine students of post-comprehensive education in Finland (N = 1419; mean age = 16). Students were asked to nominate peers to generate peer networks and to describe their own school engagement at two time points (one year apart). Network analyses revealed that the degree to which peer influence and selecti…

L'apport de la communication engageante et des représentations sociales dans le cadre de la promotion de l'éco-mobilité

2011

The purpose of this thesis was to test the applicability of binding communication in the case of car use reduction. The first two studies (1 & 2) bring out the relationship between an individual and his mobility. Our results lead us to consider a system of double bind between the challenges of sustainable development and daily obligations. The individual recognizes the negative impact of car use on the environment but justifies his behavior by an important need for flexibility. Three studies have tested the effectiveness of procedures such as commitment (Study 3) and binding communication (studies 4 and 5). A procedure of binding communication has been particularly effective. It combined a …

Understanding Stakeholder Engagement: Faith-holders, Hateholders & Fakeholders

2015

Stakeholder engagement has risen on the agenda of public relations recently mostly due to the introduction of real-time media and new hybrid forms of marketing, advertising and public relations. Engaging stakeholders is not a simple task in the information rich environment, and can be compared to a pinball match; organizational messages now have direct access, but often bounce randomly around in the online environment. To simplify measurement of public relations in this complex, unpredictable environment, this article distinguishes between three different types of stakeholder relationships: the positively engaged faith-holders, the negatively engaged hateholders, and fakeholders the unauthe…

Can a cheat sheet in an EFL test engage and empower students?

2015

Although occasionally used in language classrooms, cheat-sheet tests have not been explored in foreign or second language education research. This study experimented with cheat-sheet tests in the teaching of EFL in a Finnish upper secondary school. The participants, 101 students, could make a cheat sheet for the grammar part of their English test. A total of 92 students prepared the cheat sheet, nine did not. Students’ cheat sheets, test results and comments constituted the data for this study, analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The existence of the cheat sheet and its quality (thorough, good or limited) correlated with the grammar test results: students with a thorough cheat s…
