Effects of Neuromodulation on Gait

2018

In the last decades, non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has evolved to become a valuable tool in both basic and clinical neuroscience. Various methods of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) have been widely used for diagnostic, prognostic and even therapeutic applications in a broad range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. The rationale for using NIBS techniques lies in the possibility to modulate, in a targeted manner, the activity of different cerebral and cerebellar cortical regions, as well as the functional connections between these areas and distant brain regions also including subcortical structures. The neural circuitry in…

This paper describes a single body-mounted sensor that integrates accelerometers, gyroscopes, compasses, barometers, a GPS receiver, and a methodology to process the data for biomechanical studies. The sensor and its data processing system can accurately compute the speed, acceleration, angular velocity, and angular orientation at an output rate of 400 Hz and has the ability to collect large volumes of ecologically-valid data. The system also segments steps and computes metrics for each step. We analyzed the sensitivity of these metrics to changing the start time of the gait cycle. Along with traditional metrics, such as cadence, speed, step length, and vertical oscillation, this system est…

Prosthetic design and prototype development

2020

Abstract In recent years, there has been worldwide interest in improvement of the mobility of people with lower-limb amputations. Despite significant development of new technologies over the last decade, commercial below-knee and above-knee prostheses are still energetically passive devices. However, many locomotive functions, like walking up stairs and slopes, need significant power in the knee and ankle joints. The additional power for carrying out these previously mentioned activities needs to be achieved by means of external energy sources, which should be integral prosthetic components. This chapter presents preliminary investigations and development towards an active robotic prosthesi…

The Use of Accelerometers and Gyroscopes to Estimate Hip and Knee Angles on Gait Analysis

2014

In this paper the performance of a sensor system, which has been developed to estimate hip and knee angles and the beginning of the gait phase, have been investigated. The sensor system consists of accelerometers and gyroscopes. A new algorithm was developed in order to avoid the error accumulation due to the gyroscopes drift and vibrations due to the ground contact at the beginning of the stance phase. The proposed algorithm have been tested and compared to some existing algorithms on over-ground walking trials with a commercial device for assisted gait. The results have shown the good accuracy of the angles estimation, also in high angle rate movement.

Explaining the unique nature of individual gait patterns with deep learning

2019

Machine learning (ML) techniques such as (deep) artificial neural networks (DNN) are solving very successfully a plethora of tasks and provide new predictive models for complex physical, chemical, biological and social systems. However, in most cases this comes with the disadvantage of acting as a black box, rarely providing information about what made them arrive at a particular prediction. This black box aspect of ML techniques can be problematic especially in medical diagnoses, so far hampering a clinical acceptance. The present paper studies the uniqueness of individual gait patterns in clinical biomechanics using DNNs. By attributing portions of the model predictions back to the input …

Temporal features of imagined locomotion in normal aging.

2010

Motor imagery is the ability to mentally simulate a movement without executing it. Previous investigations have reported a deterioration of this ability during complex arm movements in aged adults. In the present study, we aimed to extend these findings by investigating the temporal features of imagined precision gait in healthy elderly adults. Locomotion is a unique example of imagined movement because it involves simulated full-body movement and the concurrent updating of environmental spatial information. Nine young and nine older adults actually or mentally walked (walking distance: 5m) along three paths having different widths (15cm, 25cm, and 50cm). The narrowest path required balance…

Contributions regarding 3D modelling of biomechanics of the foot

2021

Within this paper, a detailed study is elaborated regarding the human foot during both orthostatic and gait, the main goal being to develop 3D models which are very useful in the foot motion and loading state research. In order to elaborate the accurate 3D modelling of the human foot assembly, a thorough biomechanical study is done. Such a study was required due to the fact of the high anatomical complexity of the motions within the foot, taking into consideration the 26 bones and 33 joints consisting it. The research aims the CAD modelling of the biomechanics of the healthy subjects alongside with predisposed pathological conditions. The resulting models will have important utility in both…
