Postoperative Lens Position Preoperatively Determined by Scheimpflug Photography

1999

The position of the artificial lens has an important influence on refractive power calculation. We compared the position of the crystalline lens with that of the artificial lens after cataract surgery by means of Scheimpflug photography. A difference in position of approximately 0.8 mm in the anterior direction could be determined.

Comparison of adjuvant and adjuvant-free murine experimental asthma models

2009

Introduction The most widely used protocol for the induction of experimental allergic airway inflammation in mice involves sensitization by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of the antigen ovalbumin (OVA) used in conjunction with the adjuvant aluminium hydroxide (alum). Although adjuvants are frequently used, there are questions regarding the necessity of alum for murine asthma studies due to the non-physiological nature of this chemical. Objective The objective of this study was to compare experimental asthma phenotypes between adjuvant and adjuvant-free protocols of murine allergic airway inflammation in an attempt to develop a standardized alternative to adjuvant use. Method An adjuvant-…

Immune Modulating Effects of NKT Cells in a Physiologically Low Dose Leishmania major Infection Model after αGalCer Analog PBS57 Stimulation

2014

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic infection affecting ∼12 million people worldwide, mostly in developing countries. Treatment options are limited and no effective vaccines exist to date. Natural Killer T (NKT) cells are a conserved innate-like lymphocyte population with immunomodulating effects in various settings. A number of reports state a role of NKT cells in different models of Leishmania infection. Here, we investigated the effect of NKT cells in a physiologically relevant, intradermal low dose infection model. After inoculation of 103 infectious-stage L. major, comparable numbers of skin-immigrating NKT cells in both susceptible BALB/c mice and resistant C57BL/6 mice were noted. Compared …

Music Piracy Neutralization and the Youth of the 2010's

2014

In this qualitative research, music piracy among the youth was studied by applying Sykes’ and Matza’s neutralization theory. The key objective of the study was to find out how youths view music piracy, and how they give accounts for it using techniques of neutralization. According to the conducted semi-structured interviews, youths do acknowledge the ethical and economic problems of music piracy. However, piracy is still exercised, and in order to justify this, multiple neutralization techniques are used. The most characteristic of the employed techniques was “claim of normalcy”, with “denial of victim” and “justification by comparison” also appearing frequently. In order to prevent piracy,…

Dissonance and Neutralization of Subscription Streaming Era Digital Music Piracy : An Initial Exploration

2016

Both legal and illegal forms of digital music consumption continue to evolve with wider adoption of subscription streaming services. With this paper, we aim to extend theory on digital music piracy by showing that the rising controversy and diminishing acceptance of illegal forms of consumption call for new theoretical components and interactions. We introduce a model that integrates insights from neutralization and cognitive dissonance theories. As an initial empirical test of the proposed Dissonance-Neutralization model, we estimate a structural equation model based on self-administered survey data obtained from 322 respondents. Our results uncover potential demographic differences in pir…

Sabiedrisko attiecību komunikācijas nozīme pilsētu tūrisma attīstības veicināšanā. Liepājas un Ventspils 2021.gada tūrisma sezonas analīze

2022

Women Scientists Who Made Nuclear Astrophysics

2019

Female role models reduce the impact on women of stereotype threat, i.e. of being at risk of conforming to a negative stereotype about one’s social, gender, or racial group (Fine in Delusion of Gender. W.W. Norton & Co. NY, p. 36, 2010 [1]; Steele and Aronson in J Pers Soc Psychol 69:797–811, 1995 [2]). This can lead women scientists to underperform or to leave their scientific career because of negative stereotypes such as, not being as talented or as interested in science as men. Sadly, history rarely provides role models for women scientists; instead, it often renders these women invisible (CafeBabel Homepage [3]). In response to this situation, we present a selection of twelve outst…

Kvasidegeneroituneiden steriilien neutriinojen havaitseminen

2013

We study a model of sterile neutrinos where the three ordinary active neutrinos actually consist of a superposition of an active and a sterile neutrinos forming quasidegenerate pairs. Oscillation between these pairs causes mixing between active and sterile neutrinos. Eigenmasses of the quasidegenerate pairs are very close to each other and theirs mass squared difference is of the order δm2 ~ 10^-12 eV2 or less. Such a small mass squared difference could be probed with AGN and GRB neutrinos detected in cubic kilometer size neutrino observatories. In this work, affects of different parameters and different flavours at the source to the neutrino fluxes in cases of one, two and three sterile ne…

IceCube-22 Solar WIMP Data: Searching for Muon Neutrinos from Dark Matter Annihilations in the Sun

2009

Relic dark matter in the galactic halo may become gravitationally trapped in the Sun and accumulate in its center, where it can annihilate each other, producing standard model particles, which may decay creating neutrinos. A search was performed using data from the IceCube detector in its 22 string configuration. The experimental dataset consists of 104.26 days livetime, corresponding to a set of runs recorded during the period when the Sun was below the horizon at the South Pole, between March 21st and September 23rd.
