COLON MICROBIAL COMPOSITION IS CORRELATED WITH THE SEVERITY OF COLITIS INDUCED BY 2,4,6-TRINITROBENZESULFONIC ACID IN MICE.

2016

The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in some bacterial species of colonic microbiota, the clinical signs and the intestinal changes in mice with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) induced colitis. CD-1 male mice were randomly divided into three groups and inoculated intrarectally with saline ethanol or TNBS solutions. ethanol and TNBS treatments induced weight loss accompained by mild and severe inflammation of the colon mucosa, respectively. however, TNBS-treated mice displayed significant differences compared to the saline group in terms of disease activity index and histological scoring. Both ethanol and TNBS groups showed an increased prevalence of escherichia …

Pakottamalla vai käännyttämällä : Gene Sharpin ja Johan Galtungin väkivallattoman vallan vertailua

2016

Tämän tutkielman tehtävänä on selvittää miksi ja miten käsitys väkivallattomien toimijoiden vallasta Johan Galtungin Rauhanomaisen puolustuksen strategiassa poikkeaa siitä, miten Gene Sharpin The Politics of Nonviolent Action sen käsittää. Kirjat ovat samaan tutkijapolveen ja samoissa korkeakouluissakin opiskelleiden kirjoittajiensa pääasiallisia väkivallattoman kamppailun strategiaa käsitteleviä teoksia mutta Sharpin erikoistuminen nimenomaan väkivallattomuuden tutkimukseen ja Galtungin erikoistuminen rauhantutkimukseen antavat syyn olettaa niiden väliltä löytyvän myös kiinnostavia eroavaisuuksia. Tutkimuskysymykseen vastauksen löytämiseksi teosten esittämiä strategioita on vertailtu keske…

Seeing the Invisible: The Introduction and Development of Electron Microscopy in Britain, 1935–1945

2013

INTRODUCTIONSpring, 1941. The German campaigns in the Balkans are strengthening the Nazi domination of continental Europe. The Lend-Lease bill signed by Roosevelt on 1 1 March has broken any neutrality pretence of the USA. War material is being sold, transferred or leased to the Allied nations in the name of assisting US defence. The war is about to become global and US and British leaders discuss strategy in the event that the USA finally enters actively into the war. In this context, the British physicist Charles Galton Darwin (1887-1962) is appointed Director of the British Central Scientific Office in Washington - an institution conceived to promote closer contact and exchange of inform…

1p36 deletion results in a decrease in glycosaminoglycans which is associated with aggressiveness in neuroblastic tumors

2018

Despite our deep understanding of neuroblastic tumors, some patients still suffer treatment failure, so pre-treatment risk stratification still requires improvement and the search for new therapeutic targets must continue. Here we correlated prognostic clinical and biological features of neuroblastic tumors with the density of extracellular matrix glycosaminoglycans (the main components of the extracellular matrix ‘ground substance’), in nearly 400 primary samples. We also studied the relationship between the density of extracellular matrix glycosaminoglycans and the expression of B3GALT6, an enzyme required for their synthesis. We associated a decrease in glycosaminoglycans with neuroblast…

Convergence analysis for hierarchical longitudinal data

2018

Abstract Convergence analysis is typically envisaged either from a macro or a micro perspective. However, empirical tests tend to ignore that the two levels are often “nested” in a hierarchy. Building on hierarchical growth curve modelling, we propose an approach to convergence analysis that allows contemporaneous inference on macro and micro-convergence. Compared to the classic linear convergence analysis, the suggested methodology provides a more flexible alternative to model heterogeneity and validate the results for possible Galton's fallacy. We illustrate the approach in two empirical examples, one considering convergence across European regions and countries and the other across Itali…

Hitting straight lines by compound Poisson process paths

1990

In a recent article Mallows and Nair (1989,Ann. Inst. Statist. Math.,41, 1–8) determined the probability of intersectionP{X(t)=αt for somet≥0} between a compound Poisson process {X(t), t≥0} and a straight line through the origin. Using four different approaches (direct probabilistic, via differential equations and via Laplace transforms) we extend their results to obtain the probability of intersection between {X(t), t≥0} and arbitrary lines. Also, we display a relationship with the theory of Galton-Watson processes. Additional results concern the intersections with two (or more) parallel lines.

Reduced CD27−IgD− B Cells in Blood and Raised CD27−IgD− B Cells in Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

2019

The intestinal mucosa in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) contains increased frequencies of lymphocytes and a disproportionate increase in plasma cells secreting immunoglobulin (Ig)G relative to other isotypes compared to healthy controls. Despite consistent evidence of B lineage cells in the mucosa in IBD, little is known of B cell recruitment to the gut in IBD. Here we analyzed B cells in blood of patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) with a range of disease activities. We analyzed the frequencies of known B cell subsets in blood and observed a consistent reduction in the proportion of CD27−IgD− B cells expressing all Ig isotypes in the blood in IBD (independent o…

Mucosal immunology and probiotics.

2013

The cross-talk between the mucosa-associated immune system and microbiota is critical in mucosal tissue homeostasis as well as in protection against infectious and inflammatory diseases occurring at mucosal sites. This recent evidence has paved the way to therapeutic approaches aimed at modulating the mucosa-associated immune system using probiotics. Different strains of probiotics possess the ability to finely regulate dendritic cell (DC) activation, polarizing the subsequent T cell activity toward Th1 (e.g. Lactobacillus (Lb) acidophilus), Th2 (Lb.reuteri and Bifidobacterium bifidum) or, as more recently demonstrated, Th17 responses induced by specific strains such as Lb.rhamnosus GG and …
