"Rokuja et pääse karkuun ilman jumpbootseja" : nonce borrowings in video gaming environment
2015

2017
Siten GDD:llä on olennainen rooli peliprojektin onnistumisessa. Jyväskylä Game Lab (JGL) oli projekti jonka tavoitteena on kehittää uusia koulutuksellisia metodeja pelikoulutukseen Jyväskylässä. Tämä tutkielma tutkii pelisuunni…
Deadlock in corporate governance: Finding a common strategy for private telephone companies, 1978–1998
2017
This paper looks at how a group of small, incumbent private telephone companies complied with the international convergence of market structures. The existing research has mainly focused on large national incumbents, assuming a transition to multinational enterprise. This development process is often associated with privatisation policies and various institutional factors. The article tests these assumptions using a case study of the network of Finnish local telephone companies. It looks at the development of an interfirm network, its perspectives on the different phases of the deregulation process, and how the network tried to regenerate itself but failed to form a unified corporate struct…
DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING A BIG OPEN ONLINE COURSE BY USING A 3D VIRTUAL IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENT – LESSONS LEARNED
2017
Open Education (OE) is a distance learning approach that was strategically chosen by the European Commission (EC) to encourage cost-effective training, upskilling and reskilling of large population groups and workforce with speed and flexibility. Institutions and businesses design and offer Open Online Courses (OOCs) to address skill gaps, organizational and societal needs. OOCs and especially Massive OOCs (MOOCs) are suffering from high rates of attrition, which is attributed to various factors such as learner isolation and lack of motivation to complete the course. Recommendations to address the retention gap in MOOCs include adopting a participation-driven approach, using game design tec…
Family related variables effect on later educational outcome: a further geospatial analysis on TIMSS 2015 Finland
2020
AbstractFamily-related factors, like parent’s educational level, their values and expectations have a significant impact on child’s early skills and later educational outcomes. This study investigates the relationship between family-related socio-economic and other factors like, parental education, amount of books at home, parental attitudes towards mathematics and science, parental perception of child’s early skills and student’s later academic achievement. This is studied in the light of the Finnish data collected for Trends in International Mathematics and Scie…
In order to enable meaningful playing : how to support player's learning through digital game narrative design
2017
The main research problem of this constructive study is, how player’s learning during game playing can be supported through game narrative design. When the solutions are searched within narrative theories, modern game theories, and learning game design research, the problem turns conceptually challenging. Basically, the challenge stems from the ambiguous concept of narrative and the diversity of narrative theories. The academic conversation on learning game design has drawn approaches from various narrative theories and traditions of screenwriting and creative writing. Hence, the conversation results fragmental. Firstly, I consider what kind of narrative definition and conception should be …

Brain-Related Research as a Support Mechanism to Help Learners to Acquire Full Literacy
2023
Possibly some of the most important skills that one can have are those needed to become fully literate. We all wish our children to reach such a goal. Unfortunately, the focus of attention in reading research has been on acquiring readiness to sound out written language, i.e., the basic reading skills. Full literacy is the readiness to learn knowledge by reading. Thus, one has to be able to take two steps to reach full literacy. Indications related to both of these steps can be observe in the brain. This may be easiest when we observe the brain activity of a learner who faces difficulties in taking these steps. In fact, the serious difficulty of taking the first step can be observed soon af…
