Solubility and diffusion of nitrogen in maltodextrin/protein tablets.

2002

The gas transport properties of compacted tablets consisting of an amorphous mixture of maltodextrin and sodium caseinate were studied by dissolving nitrogen gas in the tablets and then determining the gas release over time as a function of temperature and water activity. Gas was dissolved in the tablet matrix by heating the tablets under pressure, generally to temperatures above the glass transition temperature of the matrix, holding them at these conditions for a specified time and then rapidly cooling them while maintaining the external pressure. The solubility of nitrogen was found to be largely determined by the free volume of the matrix, which in turn can be influenced to some degree …

Real-Time Vector Automata

2013

We study the computational power of real-time finite automata that have been augmented with a vector of dimension k, and programmed to multiply this vector at each step by an appropriately selected k×k matrix. Only one entry of the vector can be tested for equality to 1 at any time. Classes of languages recognized by deterministic, nondeterministic, and "blind" versions of these machines are studied and compared with each other, and the associated classes for multicounter automata, automata with multiplication, and generalized finite automata.

Interactive Terrain Simulation and Force Distribution Models in Sand Piles

2006

This paper presents an application of Cellular Automata in the field of dry Granular Systems modelling. While the study of granular systems is not a recent field, no efficient models exist, from a computational point of view, in classical methodologies. Some previous works showed that the use of Cellular Automata is suitable for the development of models that can be used in real time applications. This paper extends the existing Cellular Automata models in order to make them interactive. A model for the reaction to external forces and a pressure distribution model are presented and analyzed, with numerical examples and simulations.

Spatial quantum noise interferometry in expanding ultracold atom clouds

2005

It is ten years since the exotic form of matter known as a Bose–Einstein condensate was first created. It was the birth of ultra-low-temperature physics, and practitioners gathered last month in Banff, Canada, to celebrate and discuss the latest news, as Karen Fox reports. And this week a new development that could have a major impact in the field is announced. In the 1950s, Hanbury Brown and Twiss showed that it is possible to measure angular sizes of astronomical radio sources from correlations of signal intensities in independent detectors. ‘HBT interferometry’ later became a key technique in quantum optics, and now it has been harnessed to identify a quantum phase of ultracold bosonic a…

The squeezer ion guide

1992

Abstract The properties of an ordinary ion guide can be improved by inserting a grid between the nozzle and the skimmer. When positive ions are transported, an electric potential lower than +10 V is connected to the grid and one of the order of − 10 V to the skimmer. Efficient focusing is achieved between the nozzle and the grid by a combined action of the viscous helium flow field and the weak electric field. The focusing device is called a “squeezer”. It can be extended by adding more grids, a second skimmer, and differential pumping. Contrary to the first grid, the additional elements act more or less like electrostatic lenses in medium vacuum. With the squeezer ion guide, ions created i…

Plasma Effecton Pulse Parameters of Sound Wave

2019

This article presents the experimental results of the effect of gas discharge plasma on an acoustic wave. It is shown that after a certain intensity of the acoustic wave, the presence of plasma leads to a decrease in the Q -factor of the acoustic resonator, a shift in the acoustic resonance in the gas discharge tube at a lower frequency, and after switching off the acoustics, low-frequency gas oscillations with a frequency of 2 Hz are generated in the tube.

Combined search for the Higgs boson with the D0 experiment

2013

We perform a combination of searches for standard model Higgs boson production in $p\bar{p}$ collisions recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at a center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV. The different production and decay channels have been analyzed separately, with integrated luminosities of up to 9.7 fb$^{-1}$ and for Higgs boson masses $90\leq M_H \leq 200$ GeV. We combine these final states to achieve optimal sensitivity to the production of the Higgs boson. We also interpret the combination in terms of models with a fourth generation of fermions, and models with suppressed Higgs boson couplings to fermions. The result excludes a standard model Higgs boson …
