Abstract A method, based on the use of monitoring portable sensors, has been successfully employed for the determination of the composition of car exhausts from 11 diesel and 5 gasoline cars. These emissions include nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The measures were taken in different places where each car was parked. Abstract An alkane in the range of gasoline fraction ( n -heptane) has been used as a reactant to study the influence of zeolite Y catalyst and process variables (i.e., framework Si Al ratio and procedure of dealumination, time on stream, and contact time) on the formation of products responsible for motor and research octane of gasoline during cracking, namely branched, aromatics, and olefins. More than 30 epiphytic lichens, collected in Agadir (Morroco) and along a 150-km transect from the Atlantic Ocean eastward, were analyzed for their metal content and lead isotopic composition. This dataset was used to evaluate atmospheric metal contamination and the impact of the city on the surrounding area. The concentrations of Cu, Pb, and Zn (average ± 1 SD) were 20.9 ± 15.2 μg g−1, 13.8 ± 9.0 μg g−1, and 56.6 ± 26.6 μg g−1, respectively, with the highest values observed in lichens collected within the urban area. BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) were used as target molecules to evaluate the quality of air inside motor vehicles and near filling stations, using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) as low-cost passive sampling devices. A direct, fast, simple methodology based on the use of headspace-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry detection (HS-GC-MS) was developed for BTEX determinations, without any sample pre-treatment. Study of polychlorinated biphenyls in street dust by supercritical fluid extraction-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry

Street dust samples have been collected from highways, urban streets, a gasoline station, a pedestrian tunnel, and railway stations in some German cities. Nine polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs from tri- to heptachlorobiphenyls) were quantitatively extracted by supercritical fluid extraction with CO2 at 200 bar and 40°C and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The highest PCB loads (sum of the nine studied PCBs) of ca. 1 to 4 μg/g have been found in the samples from motorway A60 near Mainz, while in almost all other samples PCBs could be detected at only ca. 0.1 to 1 μg/g. At three sampling sites, a winter maximum of the PCB concentrations has been found.

A fully mechanized method to determine benzene in motor gasolines has been developed based on the use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and multicommutation. The flow network comprised a set of three-way solenoid valves and was controlled by means of a microcomputer furnished with an electronic interface and running by a software written in QUICK BASIC 4.5.
