Abstract This study evaluates peptidoglycan hydrolysis by a microbial muramidase from the fungus Acremonium alcalophilum in vitro and in the gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens. Peptidoglycan used for in vitro studies was derived from 5 gram-positive chicken gut isolate type strains. Objective An endoscopic classification of ‘Segmental colitis associated with diverticulosis’ (SCAD) is lacking. Our aim was therefore to assess the endoscopic spectrum of SCAD, comparing it with the histological and clinical features. Method A prospective study was performed from January 2004 to October 2007. Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (Hunter disease) is a lysosomal storage disease attributable to X-linked deficiency of the enzyme α-L-iduronate-sulfatase. Because of this deficiency, glycosaminoglycanes accumulate in various tissues and body fluids. We describe three patients representing the broad spectrum of Hunter disease and their response to enzyme replacement therapy. Patient 1 did not manifest central nervous system involvement, patient 2 manifested moderate neurologic disease, and patient 3 had already manifested a severe neurologic course during early infancy. Bolus injection of interleukin-1 beta (2 micrograms kg-1, i.v.) inhibited acid secretion induced by intravenous infusion of pentagastrin (8 micrograms kg-1 h-1) in the continuously perfused stomach of the anaesthetized rat. Administration of interleukin-1 beta did not modify mean systemic arterial blood pressure. Aim: To assess the effectiveness and the safety of RFA in patients with early HCC and compensated cirrhosis. Methods: A cohort of 151 consecutive patients with early stage HCC (122 Child-Pugh class A and 29 class B patients) treated with RFA were enrolled. The effects of neurotensin on mechanical activity of rat duodenum were investigated using an isometric-isovolumic preparation. Neurotensin (1 pM to 10 nM) induced a concentration-dependent, tetrodotoxin (TTX)-insensitive fall in both endoluminal pressure and isometric tension. At higher concentrations of neurotensin (1 nM to 1 microM) the relaxation was followed by a concentration-dependent TTX-insensitive contraction, detected only by an increase in endoluminal pressure. Different concentrations of neurotensin were required to desensitize the relaxant and the contractile actions of the neuropeptide.
