Survival and cure rates for childhood cancers in Europe have greatly improved over the past 40 years and are mostly good, although not in all European countries. The EUROCARE-5 survival study estimates survival of children diagnosed with cancer between 2000 and 2007, assesses whether survival differences among European countries have changed, and investigates changes from 1999 to 2007. We analysed survival data for 157,499 children (age 0-14 years) diagnosed between Jan 1, 1978 and Dec 31, 2007. They came from 74 population-based cancer registries in 29 countries. We calculated …
African trypanosomes expressing multiple VSGs are rapidly eliminated by the host immune system
2019
Significance Many parasites escape the host immune system by undergoing antigenic variation, a process in which surface antigens are regularly shed and replaced by new ones. Trypanosoma brucei employs multiple sophisticated molecular mechanisms to ensure the expression of a homogeneous VSG coat. We generated a mutant parasite that expresses multiple distinct VSGs and studied the consequences of having a multi-VSG coat during an infection. We showed that expression of multiple VSGs makes the parasites more vulnerable to the immune response, which can now control the trypanosomes from the onset of the infection, allowing most mice to survive. In the future, trypanosome infections may be treat…
Practical design rules for single-channel ultra high-speed dense dispersion management telecommunication systems
2009
International audience; In this work, we establish some efficient and practical design rules for the implementation of single-channel ultra-high speed (>160-Gbit/s) telecommunication systems based on dense dispersion management. Moreover, we analyze some of actual implementation issues such as slope compensation scenario, junction losses, polarization mode dispersion and chromatic dispersion fluctuations.
Local tunneling study of three-dimensional order parameter in the pi band of Al-doped MgB2 single crystals
2007
We have performed local tunneling spectroscopy on high quality Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$B$_2$ single crystals by means of Variable Temperature Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) in magnetic field up to 3 Tesla. Single gap conductance spectra due to c-axis tunneling were extensively measured, probing different amplitudes of the three-dimensional $\Delta_\pi$ as a function of Al content. Temperature and magnetic field dependences of the conductance spectra were studied in S-I-N configuration: the effect of the doping resulted in a monotonous reduction of the locally measured $T_C$ down to 24K for x=0.2. On the other hand, we have found that the gap amplitude shows a maximum value $\Delta_\pi= 2.3$ …
Sponsorēšana kā mārketinga komunikācijas veids uzņēmumā BIGBANK AS.
2015
Bakalaura darba “Sponsorēšana kā mārketinga komunikācijas veids uzņēmumā BIGBANK AS” mērķis ir, pamatojoties uz teorijā sniegtajām atziņām par sponsorēšanu kā mārketinga komunikācijas veidu, kā arī uz eksperta intervijas un aptaujas rezultātiem, veikt uzņēmumā BIGBANK AS realizēto un plānoto sponsorēšanas projektu komunikatīvo analīzi un izstrādāt priekšlikumus uzņēmuma projektu uzlabošanai un to sekmīgai realizācijai turpmāk. Darba rezultātā tika secināts, ka uzņēmums BIGBANK AS 2014. gadā ir realizējis vairākus veiksmīgus sponsorēšanas projektus, kuru atkārtota īstenošana 2015. gadā varētu sniegt potenciālu ieguvumu uzņēmuma popularizēšanā un zīmola atpazīstamības veicināšanā. Darbā ir 69…
Bigbank A/S tēla attīstīšana zīmola vizuālās identitātes maiņas rezultātā.
2017
Symplectic analysis of thin-walled curved box girders with torsion, distortion and shear lag warping effects
2022
Shear lag effect and torsional and distortional warping can significantly affect the performance of thin-walled curved box girders used in modern bridge engineering. The structural behaviour of these bridges exhibits complexity due to coupled bending and torsion together with warping effects of non-uniform torsion, distortion and shear lag. A practical method of analysis, based on the symplectic approach, with the same perspective as the Higher Order Beam Theories, is presented for overcoming the difficulties of numerical approaches via the Finite Element Method. In this paper, the Hamiltonian Structural Analysis method implements the analysis of the shear lag effect together with non-unifo…
Estimation of Leaf Area in Bell Pepper Plant using Image Processing techniques and Artificial Neural Networks
2021
Measurement and estimation of physical properties of plant leaves have always been considered as important requirements for monitoring and optimizing of plant growth. This study aimed at utilization of image processing and artificial intelligence techniques for non-invasive and non-destructive estimation of bell pepper leaves properties in the first month of growth. Physical properties of bell pepper plant leaves were extracted from RGB images. The algorithm makes use of gradient magnitude and watershed image. Leaf area as the most important index of growth was estimated as a function of other physical parameters including leaf length, width, perimeter etc. Using stereo imaging, the leaf di…
Hyaluronan alkyl derivatives-based electrospun membranes for potential guided bone regeneration: Fabrication, characterization and in vitro osteoindu…
2020
Item does not contain fulltext The aim of the work was to determine the effects of the chemical functionalization of hyaluronic acid (HA) with pendant aliphatic tails at different lengths and free amino groups in terms of chemical reactivity, degradation rate, drug-eluting features, and surface properties when processed as electrospun membranes (EM) evaluating the osteoinductive potential for a possible application as guided bone regeneration (GBR). To this end, a series of HA derivatives with different aliphatic tails (DD-Cx mol% ≈ 12.0 mol%) and decreasing derivatization of free amino groups (DD(EDA) mol% from 70.0 to 30.0 mol%) were first synthesized, namely Hn. Then dexamethasone-loaded…
