Associations of socio-economic position and disability among older women in Britain and Jyväskylä, Finland

2005

The aim was to compare the pattern of associations in measures of socio-economic position and disability among British and Finnish older women. In Britain data from the British Women's Heart and Health Study was used. Women from 23 towns took part in a nurse-assessed medical examination and postal questionnaire (n = 4286). In Finland, data from the Evergreen study was used. Eight hundred and four women from the city of Jyväskylä were interviewed at home. Socio-economic position was measured according to social class in childhood, education, use of a car, home ownership and previous occupation. Disability measures included questions on difficulties in washing/dressing and climbing stairs. Lo…

Anti-Aging Effects of GDF11 on Skin

2020

International audience; Human skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. The epidermis has four major cell layers made up of keratinocytes in varying stages of progressive differentiation. Skin aging is a multi-factorial process that affects every phase of its biology and function. The expression profiles of inflammation-related genes analyzed in resident immune cells demonstrated that these cells have a strong ability to regenerate adult skin stem cells and to produce endogenous substances such as growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11). GDF11 appears to be the key to progenitor proliferation and/or differentiation. The preservation of youthful phenot…

Vascular ageing and the related complications in the brain: New insights on related mechanisms and their translational applications

2021

s consequence of “populations aging phenomenon”, the burden of incessant increase of incidence and prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases (NeuroDegD) is becoming very alarming, as well as it is gaining an important attention the developing of intervention measures, essen-tially preventive. Of consequence, the knowledge of primordial Neuro-DegD causes, and the related mechanisms, appears to be fundamental. Consistent with this, growing evidence reports a close link of the vascular aging, dysfunction and diseases with the onset and progression of NeuroDegD.

CB1 cannabinoid receptor-mediated aggressive behavior

2013

This study examined the role of cannabinoid CB1 receptors (CB1r) in aggressive behavior. Social encounters took place in grouped and isolated mice lacking CB1r (CB1KO) and in wild-type (WT) littermates. Cognitive impulsivity was evaluated in the delayed reinforcement task (DRT). Gene expression analyses of monoaminooxidase-A (MAO-A), catechol-o-methyl-transferase (COMT), 5-hydroxytriptamine transporter (5-HTT) and 5-HT1B serotonergic receptor (5HT1Br) in the median and dorsal raphe nuclei (MnR and DR, respectively) and in the amygdala (AMY) were performed by real time-PCR. Double immunohistochemistry studies evaluated COMT and CB1r co-localization in the raphe nuclei and in the cortical (AC…

Examining the effects of birth order on personality.

2015

This study examined the long-standing question of whether a person’s position among siblings has a lasting impact on that person’s life course. Empirical research on the relation between birth order and intelligence has convincingly documented that performances on psychometric intelligence tests decline slightly from firstborns to laterborns. By contrast, the search for birth-order effects on personality has not yet resulted in conclusive findings. We used data from three large national panels from the United States (N = 5,240), Great Britain (N = 4,489), and Germany (N = 10,457) to resolve this open research question. This data base allowed us to identify even very small effects of birth o…

Vil økt fysisk aktivitet kunne redusere andelen trygdemottakere? : En case-studie basert på deltakere ved Aktiv på dagtid, Aust-Agder

2018

Masteroppgave offentlig politikk og ledelse ME502 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 This study is based on Aktiv pådagtid as an case study. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between increased participation in physical activities directed by Aktiv på dagtid and the participants status in relation to working life. To better understand the relationship between these two variables, the study include three possible predictors:health, social support and self-efficacy.Thisstudy use a paper-based survey with 144 respondents, which represent the participants atAktiv på dagtid, who are at theage between 16-70, receive social security benefits and resides in the municipalities of…

ESR response to gamma-rays of alanine pellets containing B(OH)3 or Gd2O3.

2007

ESR response to gamma-irradiation (1-50 Gy) of blends containing alanine and either B(OH)(3) or Gd(2)O(3) is reported. The sensitivity of the alanine--B(OH)(3) blend is comparable to the sensitivity of pure alanine, although its lowest detectable dose, LDD, is smaller ( approximately 1.3 Gy) than that of pure alanine ( approximately 2.9 Gy). Alanine with Gd(2)O(3) is about two times more sensitive than pure alanine, and its LDD is 0.8 Gy. The better sensitivity and LDD are probably due to the high atomic number (Z=64) of gadolinium, which enhances the interaction probability with photons and, consequently, the radical yield. This study suggests that other high-Z atoms may be useful for incr…
