Collective subspaces for large amplitude motion and the generator coordinate method

1979

The collection path $|\ensuremath{\varphi}(q)〉$ to be used in a microscopic description of large amplitude collective motion is determined by means of the generator coordinate method. By varying the total energy with respect to $|\ensuremath{\varphi}(q)〉$ and performing an adiabatic expansion a hierarchy of equations is obtained which determines uniquely a hierarchy of collective paths with increasing complexity. To zeroth order the $|\ensuremath{\varphi}(q)〉$ are Slater determinants, to first order they include 2p-2h correlations. In both cases simple noninterative prescriptions for an explicit construction of the path are derived. For a correlated path their solutions agree at the Hartree…

A new measurement of the 7Be(p,γ)8B cross-section with an implanted 7Be target

1999

Abstract The 7Be(p,γ)8B capture reaction is of major importance to the physics of the sun and the issues of the “solar neutrino puzzle”. We report here on a new determination of the absolute cross section of this reaction, using a novel method which overcomes some of the major experimental uncertainties of previous measurements. We utilize a 7Be target implanted into a Cu substrate and a uniformly scanned particle beam larger than the target spot, eliminating issues of target homogeneity and backscattering loss of 8B reaction products. The target was produced using a beam of 1.8·1010/s 7Be nuclei extracted at ISOLDE (CERN) from a graphite target bombarded by 1 GeV protons in a two-step reso…

Characterization of deuteride titanium targets used in neutron generators

2000

Abstract The study of the physicochemical characteristics of titanium thin films and the corresponding deuterium absorption/desorption kinetics was performed. In order to optimize the production of high-energy neutrons the behaviour of deuteride titanium targets has been studied experimentally by bombardment with 120 and 350 kV deuterons by means of electrostatic accelerators. The importance of the deposit evaporation conditions on the efficiency of neutron emission is clearly demonstrated as well as the thermomechanical stability of the Ti thin film by deuteron bombardment. The main parameters involved in the targets behaviour have been discussed from a thermodynamical approach.

Effect of the non-gaussianity on the measurement error for the filtered 1/f noise intensity

1999

To study the nature of the 1/f noise phenomenon in conductors, we seek a tool for testing different hypotheses of 1/f noise origin. The method analyzing the noise intensity at the output of a bandpass filter is discussed for the case of non-Gaussian processes. Data on measurement error are presented for the 1/f noise intensity in GaAs films and the Gaussian white noise emulated by a computer. A numerical model of 1/f noise as the superposition of telegraph random processes has been created. This method requires further improvement to check the noise for stationarity. Some ideas of how to do that are proposed.

An integrated calibration system for liquid argon calorimetry

1999

Abstract A novel technical solution for an integrated version of the pulse generator of a calibration system for liquid argon calorimeters is presented. It consists of a differential amplifier with automatic offset compensation, a current mirror and a switching logic. These components are integrated on an ASIC chip in CMOS technology. The technical realisation as well as results on the performance are presented.

Precision measurement of the hadronic cross-section through the radiative return method

2002

Electron--positron annihilation into hadrons plus an energetic photon from initial-state radiation allows the hadronic cross-section to be measured over a wide range of energies at high luminosity meson factories. Weighted integrals over this cross-section are a decisive input for electroweak precision tests. A Monte Carlo event generator called PHOKHARA has been developed, which simulates $e^+ e^- \to$ hadrons + photon(s) at the NLO accuracy. The latest tests and upgrades are presented in this paper.

ϒ production in p–Pb collisions at sNN=8.16 TeV

2020

$\Upsilon$ production in p-Pb interactions is studied at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The measurement is performed reconstructing bottomonium resonances via their dimuon decay channel, in the centre-of-mass rapidity intervals $2.03 < y_{\rm{cms}} < 3.53$ and $-4.46 < y_{\rm{cms}} < -2.96$, down to zero transverse momentum. In this work, results on the inclusive $\Upsilon(1\rm{S})$ production cross section as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum are presented. The corresponding nuclear modification factor shows a suppression of the $\Upsilon(1\rm{S})$ yields with respect to pp collis…

Centrality dependence of particle production inp−Pbcollisions atsNN=5.02TeV

2015

We report measurements of the primary charged-particle pseudorapidity density and transverse momentum distributions in p-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV and investigate their correlation with experimental observables sensitive to the centrality of the collision. Centrality classes are defined by using different event-activity estimators, i.e., charged-particle multiplicities measured in three different pseudorapidity regions as well as the energy measured at beam rapidity (zero degree). The procedures to determine the centrality, quantified by the number of participants (N-part) or the number of nucleon-nucleon binary collisions (N-coll) are described. We show that, in contrast to Pb…

New extraction of color-octet NRQCD matrix elements from charmonium hadroproduction

1999

We re-analyze Tavatron data on charmonium hadroproduction in the framework of the color-octet model implemented in the event generator PYTHIA taking into account initial-state radiation of gluons and Altarelli-Parisi evolution of final-state gluons fragmenting into $c\bar{c}$ pairs. We obtain new values for the color-octet matrix elements relevant to this production process. We discuss the sensitivity of our results to the transverse momentum lower cut-off employed in the generation to avoid the problematic $p_t{\to}0$ region, arguing about the reliability of our previous extraction of the NRQCD matrix elements for the $^3S_1^{(8)}$ and $^1S_0^{(8)}+^3P_J^{(8)}$ contributions. Finally we ex…

Bottomonia hadroproduction

2001

We analyze Tevatron data of bottomonium hadroproduction in the framework of the colour-octet model (COM) implemented in the event generator PYTHIA using CTEQ4L PDF taking into account initial-state radiation of gluons and Altarelli-Parisi evolution of final-state gluons. We obtain new values for the colour-octet matrix elements relevant to this production process for the Upsilon(nS) family (n=1,2,3), finding that the ^1S_0^{(8)}+^3P_J^{(8)} contributions are not needed in the fit. We show the different contributions to Upsilon(1S) production at Tevatron for p_T>8 GeV, comparing them with CDF data. Finally we extrapolate to LHC energies to predict Upsilon(nS) production rates.
