The Efficiency of Pulse Therapy with Glucocorticoids in Inflammatory Orbital Disorders: Case Report
2020
Abstract Orbital pseudotumor represents a benign inflammatory disorder of the orbit, with unspecified etiology, whose clinical presentation can mimic the ocular pathology of Basedow disease, namely Graves’ ophthalmopathy, the two of them representing two of the most common orbital conditions. Imagistic methods and laboratory analyses can establish the diagnosis through orbital MRI images specific for the orbital pseudotumor, especially by dosage of the TSH receptor antibodies (TRAb) which will have increased values in Basedow disease with ocular damage. In both situations, the treatment is represented as a first therapeutic line by administration of corticotherapy in high dosage orally or i…
The joint structure–function dynamics of glaucoma progression
2015
While the presence and rate of glaucoma progression influence treatment decisions, the methods currently available to detect and monitor progression are imprecise and do not allow clinicians to make accurate assessments of the status of their patients. Models that focus on combining structural and functional parameters may improve our ability to detect and monitor glaucoma progression. Several of these models, however, are limited by their reliance on population statistics and on the static assumptions they make about the nature of glaucoma progression. Dynamic modeling of glaucoma progression may lead to a better understanding of glaucoma progression that could eventually translate into ma…
Analysis of Tear Protein Patterns for the Diagnosis of Dry Eye
2002
Dry eye syndrome occurs very frequently in the industrial world. In the United States, one of five people, 59 millions patients, suffer from symptoms of this disease (Eagle Vision, Yankelovich and Partners, 1997), and the number of patients has doubled in the last 10 years. 1-4 Diagnosis and treatment of dry eye syndrome are challenging. In fact, a curative therapy of this disease does not exist. Dry eye is a disease with various symptoms resulting from aqueous, mucin or lipid deficiency. Different diseases, among them Sjogren’s syndrome, can cause this deficiency, but most patients do not have accompanying disorders.
Effects of Superficial Keratectomy in Peripheral Hypertrophic Subepithelial Corneal Opacification on Front and Back Corneal Astigmatism
2020
To evaluate changes of anterior and posterior corneal astigmatism after superficial keratectomy in peripheral hypertrophic subepithelial corneal opacification (PHSCO). Patients with PHSCO, who had ...

Tear Osmolarity During the First Postoperative Month After Cataract Surgery
2021
Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate tear osmolarity changes in a healthy ocular surface in an eye that had been operated on within the first month after cataract surgery. This aim was achieved by forming two groups from the included patients. Patients with one eye exposed to cataract surgery formed the study group, while the eyes of the same patients with no cataract surgery were set as the control group. Both the operated and non-operated eye of each patient were scanned before surgery, the following morning, one week and one month after surgery. Tear osmolarity did not differ between the groups before the operation. On the first day after the surgery, tear osmolarity signif…
The Incidence of Audible Steam Pops Is Increased and Unpredictable With the ThermoCool® Surround Flow Catheter During Left Atrial Catheter Ablation: …
2015
Audible Steam Pops During Left Atrial Catheter AblationIntroduction Open irrigated radiofrequency (RF) ablation catheters with a porous tip (56 holes, TC-SF) permit delivering RF energy in a temperature-controlled mode without temperature rise. This prospective observational study investigated the association of different catheter parameters on the occurrence of audible steam pops during left atrial (LA) ablation. Methods and Results A total of 226 patients underwent TC-SF catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation. RF power delivery, impedance and catheter tip temperature were continually recorded throughout the ablation. Pulmonary vein isolation was performed with a maximum of 27 W and LA …
Vacuoles in the AcrysofTM Intraocular Lens as Factor of the Presence of Serum in Aqueous Humor
2001
<i>Objective:</i> Acrysof™ (Alcon) foldable lenses (IOLs) have been shown to be highly biocompatible and exhibit a low incidence of posterior capsular opacification. However, minute vacuoles or ‘glistenings’ have been observed in some Acrysof IOLs. The clinical relevance of vacuole formation is presently unclear. To help clarify the influence of factors present under in vivo conditions on vacuole formation, the present experimental study examines the influence of aqueous humor components on the occurrence of vacuoles in Acrysof IOLs. <i>Methods:</i> A total of 12 sterile Acrysof IOLs (Alcon, MA60BM) were incubated at body temperature (37°C) for 3 or 6 months in anter…
Artiflex Toric Phakic Intraocular Lens Implantation in Congenital Nystagmus
2011
Case: A 44-year-old woman with congenital nystagmus and myopic astigmatism in both eyes who was submitted to phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation. Methods: Full ophthalmologic examination including refractive status, corrected (CDVA) and uncorrected (UCVA) monocular and binocular visual acuities, ocular motility, slit-lamp evaluation, tonometry and fundoscopy before and after implantation of toric pIOLs (Artiflex; Ophtec BV, The Netherlands) in both eyes. Results: Preoperative logMAR CDVA were 0.699 and 0.420 in the right and left eye, respectively. Three months after surgery, logMAR UCVA were 0.398 and 0.182, reaching binocular logMAR UCVA of 0.132. There were no changes in nystagmu…
The use of nomograms in LDR-HDR prostate brachytherapy
2011
Purpose: The common use of nomograms in Low Dose Rate (LDR) permanent prostate brachytherapy (BT) allows to estimate the number of seeds required for an implant. Independent dosimetry verification is recommended for each clinical dosimetry in BT. Also, nomograms can be useful for dose calculation quality assurance and they could be adapt ed to High Dose Rate (HDR). This work sets nomograms for LDR and HDR prostate-BT implants, which are applied to three different institutions that use different implant techniques. Material and methods: Patients treated throughout 2010 till April 2011 were considered for this study. This exam ple was chosen to be the representative of the latest implant tech…
