Vaccinare per HPV: non solo le adolescenti e non solo profilassi. Review e position paper dell'Italian HPV Study Group (IHSG)

2020

HPV vaccination has been introduced in clinical practice in recent years and represents the most effective strategy of primary prevention of cervical carcinoma and of female genital preneoplastic conditions. One of the major issues of the subject is represented by vaccination coverage of the target population. Since its introduction, HPV vaccine efficacy has been progressively demonstrated also towards extragenital HPV-correlated conditions and in males too. Moreover, even subjects of older age groups or subjects who already had HPV infections have been demonstrated to received benefits from vaccination, due to improvements of their immunological response. Recently, vaccine efficacy has als…

Evaluation of the Burden of HPV-Related Hospitalizations as a Useful Tool to Increase Awareness: 2007–2017 Data from the Sicilian Hospital Discharge …

2020

In light of the implementation of human papillomavirus (HPV) prevention strategies, epidemiological studies in different geographical areas are required in order to assess the impact of HPV-related diseases. The purpose of the present study was to describe the burden of HPV-related hospitalizations in Sicily. A retrospective observational study estimated 43,531 hospitalizations attributable to HPV from 2007 to 2017. During the observed period, there was a decrease for all HPV-related conditions with a higher reduction, among neoplasms, for cervical cancer (annual percent change (APC) = &minus

Case report of a large cephalic vein aneurysm inducing heart failure in a renal transplant patient with radio-cephalic fistula for haemodialysis

2020

Highlights • The venous aneurysm is one of the most common complications of autologous AVF. • The vein aneurysm should be treat by surgical resection and anastomotic ligature. • AVF shouldn’t be ligated from 1-year kidney transplantation except in some cases. • Surgical ligation to prevent complications could be considered an option.

Impact of Cumulative Dose of Carfilzomib in Combination with Lenalidomide and Dexamethasone in Relapsed Refractory Myeloma Patients: A Retrospective …

2018

Abstract Background: Triplet-based lenalidomide plus dexamethasone (Rd) combinations have become the new standard of care for early relapse and refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM). Carfilzomib is a novel selective proteasome inhibitor (PI) with high efficacy in RRMM. The ASPIRE phase 3 trial showed the superiority of carfilzomib-based triplet (KRd compared to Rd), leading to approval of K for RRMM. However, little is known about safety and efficacy of KRd outside a clinical trial context. Experimental design and aims: In 11 Sicilian Centers belonging to the Sicilian Myeloma Network, from November 2016, when KRd regimen was approved in Italy, to June 2018, 103 consecutive RRMM patients (previ…

Use of wearable cardioverter‐defibrillator in association with catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation‐related tachycardiomyopathy

2019

Implantable cardioverter‐defibrillator (ICD) implantation is not indicated in patients with potentially transient or reversible causes of sudden cardiac death (SCD). Wearable cardioverter‐defibrillator (WCD) is increasingly used for SCD prevention in patients who are temporary at high risk of ventricular arrhythmia. Hereby, we describe a case of tachycardiomyopathy successfully managed with ablation and WCD backup. Implantable cardioverter‐defibrillators are a Class I indication by American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association/Heart Rhythm Society guidelines to prevent SCD in patients with nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy, New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class II …

Osteoporosis, densidad mineral ósea y complejo CKD-MBD (II): implicaciones terapéuticas

2019

Obesity, Adipokines and Metabolic Syndrome in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

2012

The complex mechanisms linking fat excess to metabolic syndrome are not well understood, but several experimental studies have shown that altered production of adipokines plays a main role in development and progression of this disorder. In particular, reduced secretion of adiponectin has a crucial role in inducing insulin resistance but also in determining the clustering of elevated triglycerides and small, dense LDL particles. Increased leptin secretion may be responsible for sympathetic nervous system overactivity and hypertension, while reduced omentin may have an important permissive role in the development of atherogenic processes. Finally, cytokines and other adipokines (resistin, vi…

Primary percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty for Acute Myocardial Infarction in patients not included in randomized studies

1999

Abstract Patients with acute myocardial infarction included in randomized trials comparing primary percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (pPTCA) with thrombolysis represent a special subgroup of patients with a low event rate. Patients excluded from these trials represent a variety of different subgroups, with different patient characteristics and possibly different clinical event rates. Primary PTCA was performed in 491 consecutive patients with acute myocardial infarction in the prospective multicenter observational Maximal Individual Therapy in Acute Myocardial Infarction trial. They were divided into the following groups: group I, patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria of t…

Glutathione, GlutathioneS-Transferase α and π, and Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Content in Relationship to Drug Resistance in Ovarian Cancer

1997

Glutathione, glutathione S-transferases alpha and pi, and aldehyde dehydrogenase are associated with resistance to carboplatin and/or cyclophosphamide in cell lines. Therefore, we examined whether the expression of these factors in ovarian cancer tissue specimens is associated with resistance of the patients to combination chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide/carboplatin. Ovarian cancer tissue specimens were taken intraoperatively from 139 patients and frozen in liquid nitrogen, and the contents of glutathione S-transferases alpha and pi, total glutathione, and aldehyde dehydrogenase activity were determined. No association between the levels of glutathione S-transferases alpha and pi or alde…
