Impact of Obesity in Kidney Diseases.

2021

The clinical consequences of obesity on the kidneys, with or without metabolic abnormalities, involve both renal function and structures. The mechanisms linking obesity and renal damage are well understood, including several effector mechanisms with interconnected pathways. Higher prevalence of urinary albumin excretion, sub-nephrotic syndrome, nephrolithiasis, increased risk of developing CKD, and progression to ESKD have been identified as being associated with obesity and having a relevant clinical impact. Moreover, renal replacement therapy and kidney transplantation are also influenced by obesity. Losing weight is key in limiting the impact that obesity produces on the kidneys by reduc…

Glandular odontogenic cyst: report of a new case with cytokeratin-19 expression

2013

The glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) was a rare jawbone cyst described in 1988 by Gardner et al.1 as a distinct entity. This lesion can involve either jaw, but the anterior region of the mandible was the most commonly affected area. Clinical and radiographic findings were not specific, and the diagnosis of GOC can be extremely difficult due to the rarity of this lesion. The cyst presented a wall constituted by fibrous connective tissue and was lined by a non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium of variable thickness. Large areas of the lining epithelium presented cylinder cells, sometimes ciliated. A variable amount of mucina was occasionally noted. Due to the strong similarities, thi…

Functional analysis of broadly tuned odorant receptors expressed in the mouse septal organ through patch-clamp recordings in an intact preparation an…

2010

The septal organ (SO) is a small island of olfactory epithelium located at the ventral base of the nasal septum. SO neurons express identified odorant receptors, but its function remains unknown. Using perforated patch clamp recordings, we investigated the response properties of SO neurons in the intact epithelium of mice to a panel of 45 odorants or mixtures. Out of 328 neurons tested, approximately 70% responded to odor stimulation. Among the responsive neurons, 72.5 % responded to multiple odorants. Responding neurons were tested with increasing concentrations of 3 odorants (octanoic acid, (+) camphor, amylacetate) and a mixture (fox urine). Dose-response curves show nanomolar threshold …

Nuovi scenari familiari e omoparentalità: autopercezioni e relazioni sociali

2015

The Associations Between Leisure-Time Physical Activity and Academic Performance: A Twin Study

2021

Background: Both genetic and environmental influences have been shown to contribute to the association between physical activity and overall academic performance. The authors examined whether leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) shares genetic and environmental variances between spelling, essay writing, reading aloud, reading comprehension, and mathematics in early adolescence. Moreover, they investigated whether genetic polymorphisms associated with physical activity behavior affect these academic skills. Methods: Participants were 12-year-old Finnish twins (n = 4356–4370 twins/academic skill, 49% girls). Academic skills were assessed by teachers, and LTPA was self-reported. Polygenic sco…

ALLERGENS IN THE PARK AND GARDEN FLORA OF SICILY

2017

The ornamental flora of parks and gardens, as we know, generally includes high proportions of exotics. In Italy it arose from Renaissance on and increasingly enriched up to include a large proportion of exotics native to countries under Mediterranean and temperate climates. Similarly the garden flora of Sicily has a large number of mostly Mediterranean and subtropical exotics. Even if very similar on the whole, these floras differ in some floristic, biological and ecological features. Indeed, several succulent families and genera that are rare or missing in Italy are frequent in Sicily, but plants from temperate regions are almost absent in the island. As regards the allergenic patterns ref…
