Neural correlates of hemispheric dominance and ipsilaterality within the vestibularsystem

2007

Earlier functional imaging studies on the processing of vestibular information mainly focused on cortical activations due to stimulation of the horizontal semicircular canals in right-handers. Two factors were found to determine its processing in the temporo-parietal cortex: a dominance of the non-dominant hemisphere and an ipsilaterality of the neural pathways. In an investigation of the role of these factors in the vestibular otoliths, we used vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) in a fMRI study of monaural saccular-otolith stimulation. Our aim was to (1) analyze the hemispheric dominance for saccular-otolith information in healthy left-handers, (2) determine if there is a predom…

Waking Self-Hypnosis Efficacy in Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment for Pathological Gambling:An Effectiveness Clinical Assay

2013

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for pathological gambling has a long-term success rate of more than 50%. This study evaluated the effect of self-hypnosis in cognitive-behavioral treatment of pathological gamblers. Forty-nine participants were assigned to 2 groups. Both groups received a cognitive-behavioral protocol, and Group 1, the no-hypnosis group, received an 11-session intervention and Group 2, the hypnosis group, received 7 sessions that included self-hypnosis. Both groups were equal in gambling chronicity, frequency, intensity, change motivation, and problems derived from gambling. All participants reported significant improvement in gambling behavior and consequences at both treatment…

A retrospective radiographic evaluation of the anterior loop of the mental nerve: Comparison between panoramic radiography and cone beam computerized…

2014

Objectives: To compare the prevalence and the length of mental loop, measured with panoramic radiography (PR) and cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT). Material and Methods: PG and CBCT images where analyzed by a single calibrated examiner to determine the presence and the position of the mental foramen (MF), its distance to the lower mandible border, the anterior length of the mental loop (ML) and the bone quality in 82 PR and 82 CBCT. Results: ML was identified in 36.6 % of PR and 48.8 % of CBCT. PR showed a magnification of 1.87 when compared to CBCT. The mean of anterior extension of the inferior alveolar nerve and the distance to the inferior border of the mandible was higher for P…

Three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography for diagnosis of keratocystic odontogenic tumours; evaluation of four cases.

2011

The keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT), formerly known as the odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a benign intraosseous lesion that derives from remnants of the dental lamina. Due to its characteristics, clinical and histopathological features and various treatment approaches, this pathology is different comparing with other odontogenic cysts. Radiographically the KCOT appears as well-defined unilocular or multilocular radiolucency with thin radiopaque borders. In most cases, conventional radiographic imaging, such as panoramic views and intraoral periapical films, are adequate to determine the location and estimate the size of an KCOT. However, the clinical use for cone-beam computed tomog…

TESTICULAR SPERM EXTRACTION AND INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION

1998

We evaluate the efficacy of testicular sperm extraction and results of intracytoplasmic sperm injection in cases of nonobstructive azoospermia. In addition, we define predictive parameters for successful testicular sperm extraction in these patients.A total of 154 patients with nonobstructive azoospermia underwent multiple testicular biopsies to obtain testicular spermatozoa and for histopathological diagnosis. Results of testicular sperm extraction were related to suspected etiology of azoospermia, patient age, maximal testicular volume, serum follicle-stimulating hormone and histopathology. When testicular sperm extraction was successful, intracytoplasmic sperm injection was performed.Spe…

Fungiform papillae density in patients with burning mouth syndrome and xerostomia

2011

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze fungiform papillae density in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and xerostomia. Study design: In this cross-sectional clinical study, sixty patients were included (20 with BMS, 20 with xerostomia and 20 healthy controls). The fungiform papillae density was analyzed over a small region on the anterior tip of the tongue with the aid of a digital camera. The number of papillae was measured in an area of 19 mm2. Results: The patients with BMS showed significantly higher fungiform papillae density than the patients with xerostomia; though no statistically significant differences were recorded versus the control group. In the BMS group, 65%…

Immunogenicity and reactogenicity of the Biken acellular pertussis vaccine in young adults

2000

Abstract To assess the reactogenicity and immunogenicity of the Biken acellular pertussis vaccine (Pa) following administration of a single vaccine dose to young adults with or without a history of prior pertussis immunization, 104 healthy, male and female adults without primary pertussis immunization were enrolled in Mainz (former West Germany; “not previously pertussis vaccinated”, N-PPV-group); in parallel, 103 adults with a history of having received ≥four doses of a combined diphtheria-, tetanus-toxoid, whole-cell pertussis vaccine (DTwP) were enrolled in Magdeburg (former East Germany; “previously pertussis-vaccinated”, PPV-group). Large areas of redness (>20 mm) were seen in 2.9%/1.0…

Radiofrequency treatment of cervicogenic headache

2010

Objectives: In the clinical management of facial pain, a possible cervical origin must be considered. A clinical exploration is therefore essential. The disorder originates in the intimate connections between the cranial portion of the spinal cord and the trigeminal system. Although solid evidence supporting the use of radiofrequency (RF) treatment is lacking, it remains one of the management options to be taken into account. The present study evalu - ates the efficacy of RF in application to cervicogenic headache. Study design: We present three cases of severe facial pain arising from different cervical structures. Results: In two cases the pain originated in cervical roots C2 and C3, whil…

Transient seizure onset network for localization of epileptogenic zone: effective connectivity and graph theory-based analyses of ECoG data in tempor…

2018

Objective: Abnormal and dynamic epileptogenic networks cause difficulties for clinical epileptologists in the localization of the seizure onset zone (SOZ) and the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in preoperative assessments of patients with refractory epilepsy. The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of time-varying effective connectivity networks in various non-seizure and seizure periods, and to propose a quantitative approach for accurate localization of SOZ and EZ. Methods: We used electrocorticogram recordings in the temporal lobe and hippocampus from seven patients with temporal lobe epilepsy to characterize the effective connectivity dynamics at a high temporal resolution …

Localization of Congenital Tegmen Tympani Defects

2007

Objective: This study sets out to demonstrate the normal developmental steps of the tegmen tympani and thus explains the typical localization of congenital tegmental defects. Specimens: For this study, 79 macerated and formalin-fixed human temporal bones from 14th fetal week to adults were observed and prepared. Intervention: Macroscopic and microscopic examination of the prenatal and postnatal changes of the tegmen tympani during its development. Main Outcome Measure: Temporal bones from 14th fetal week to adults underwent descriptive anatomic studies to understand the normal development of the tegmen tympani and to find a possible cause of its congenital defects. Results: The medial part …
