Le double sens de la mission de la Judith biblique dans l’interprétation giralducienne

2020

Jean Giraudoux in his version of the biblical myth recounting the heroic mission of Judith reveals the art of seducing Holofernes. Judith’s discovery of carnal pleasure complicates her return to the city because the two truths, that of the rabbis and that of Judith, are exposed to a confrontation.

neutering neuter – grammatical gender and the dehumanisation of women in German

2021

Grammatical gender in German has traditionally been described as a rather arbitrary system (Helbig and Buscha 1988). This is not the case in regard to terms of person reference, where natural gender assignment is the norm: Masculine and feminine grammatical gender largely correlate with the extralinguistic assignment of male and female gender. Neuter gender predominantly denotes inanimate entities (Köpcke and Zubin 1996, 2009). The use of neutral gender in reference to women nevertheless has a long history in German, usually with pejorative connotations (Köpcke and Zubin 1996, 2009). Historically, this can be illustrated in relation to nouns, pronouns and articles: 1 By neuter nouns denotin…

Ambiguous Meanings and Affects – Death in Monika Fagerholm’s The American Girl and The Glitter Scene The article focuses on the deaths that take place in Monika Fagerholm’s novels The American Girl (2005) and The Glitter Scene (2009). The viewpoint to the novels is that of affects. The theore¬tical framework derives from the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze (1925–1995) who is one of the best-known 20th century philosophers of affect. Firstly, the article discusses the ways in which the deaths affect the characters of the novels. Attention is paid especially to the central character called Doris Flinkenberg. She is strongly affected by the deaths that have taken place in the District where …

”Pitikö runouskin vetää ihan läskiksi?”

The Affective Reception of Tytti Heikkinen’s Poem “Ryhavalaan tasoa” In this article, I analyze the reception of Tytti Heikkinen’s poem ”Ryhavalaan tasoa” (”On par with whales”) from the viewpoint of affectivity. ”Ryhavalaan tasoa” is a Flarf poem which means that it has been made of material found from the internet with weird search terms. Flarf poetry is also based on a kind of aesthetics of ugliness. The poem is a dramatic monologue in which the speaking I – a girl called ”Fatty XL” – talks unrestrainedly and vulgarly about fatness, sexuality and shame. Theoretically, the article relies mainly on Rita Felski’s and Sianne Ngai’s views on affectivity of reading. The research material consi…

“It was an awful mistake with that girl. Advise me what to do.” On Jaroslav Hašek’s bigamy

2020

In this article, Jaroslav Hašek’s bigamy will be discussed from two points of view – the biographical and legal ones. In almost every writer’s biography, the fact of his marrying two women is mentioned, but it is also quickly dismissed with only a few words of explanation. In the author’s opinion, after almost a hundred years following Hašek’s death, the case of his bigamy deserves proper interpretation.

The influence of age at slaughter and litter size on some quality traits of kid meat

2002

Abstract To study variations in the carcass characteristics of Girgentana kids slaughtered at 25 or 35 days of age and litter size (single or twin), 27 male kids were slaughtered and body components, carcass joints, pelvic limb tissue composition, meat fatty acid composition and M. longissimus dorsi (LD) colour were evaluated. Girgentana kids slaughtered at 35 days had greater live weights (6.4 kg versus 5.0 kg; P ≤0.01), carcass weights (4.5 kg versus 3.6 kg; P ≤0.01), muscle contents (57.6% versus 54.9%; P ≤0.01) but similar dressing percentages (70.1% versus 70.6%) as compared to kids slaughtered at 25 days. Twin kids had a higher muscle percentage (57.3% versus 55.2%; P ≤0.05) and simil…

Use of weaning concetrate in the feeding of suckling kids: effects on meat quality

2006

A study was conducted to investigate the effect of a feeding supplementation with starter concentrate on “Capretto” meat production and its qualitative characteristics. To this end, 31 Girgentana kids, slaughtered at 59 days of age from two feeding groups (concentrate group (CG) and milk group (MG)) were utilised. Carcass measurements (body components, carcass joints, pelvic limb tissue composition, meat fatty acid composition and M. longissimus dorsi (LD) physical characteristics), body weight at birth, and at slaughter, were evaluated. The effect of concentrate supplementation did not influence the slaughter weight, slaughter and dissection data, tissue composition and meat chemical compo…

Friend Influence and Susceptibility to Influence: Changes in Mathematical Reasoning as a Function of Relative Peer Acceptance and Interest in Mathema…

2016

This study investigated friend influence over mathematics achievement in 202 same-sex friendship dyads (106 girl dyads). Participants were in the third grade (around age 9) at the outset. Each friend completed a questionnaire describing interest in mathematics and a standardized mathematical reasoning assessment. Peer nominations provided a measure of peer acceptance. The results revealed evidence that interest in mathematics moderates both the degree to which the higher-accepted friend was influential and the degree to which the lower-accepted friend was susceptible to influence. Specifically, the third-grade mathematical reasoning of the higher-accepted friend predicted an increase in the…

Boosting Reading Fluency: An intervention case study at subword level

2007

This study is an intervention case study of fluency in Finnish‐speaking children with dyslexia. Two 7‐year‐old children, a girl and a boy, were selected from the Jyvaskyla Longitudinal Study of Dyslexia. The intervention emphasised syllables as reading units, and proceeded from reading syllables to reading words and text. Letter knowledge, reading skills (syllables, words, pseudowords, and text reading), and syllable segmentation of words were measured before, immediately after, and three months after the intervention. The results showed that the intervention mainly affected fluency at the syllable level. The girl also showed some improvements in fluency (accuracy, speed) at the word and te…
