Up with ecology, down with economy? : The consolidation of the idea of climate change mitigation in the global public sphere
2018
Building on theories of valuation and evaluation, we develop an analytical framework that outlines six elements of the process of consolidation of an idea in the public sphere. We then use the framework to analyse the process of consolidation of the idea of climate change mitigation between 1997 and 2013, focusing on the interplay between ecological and economic evaluations. Our content analysis of 1274 articles in leading newspapers in five countries around the globe shows that (1) ecological arguments increase over time, (2) economic arguments decrease over time, (3) the visibility of environmental nongovernmental organizations as carriers of ecological ideas increases over time, (4) the …
To act or not to act : Debating the climate change agenda in the United States Congress
2020
Most climate change actions take place in the international context in terms of multilateral negotiations and accords or in bilateral agreements between heads of the state. Parliaments or legislatures such as the United States Congress are in a crucial position when it comes to converting agreements or aims to action in domestic politics. The United States has played a volatile role in international negotiations on climate change. From categorically rejecting the Kyoto protocol during the George W. Bush administration, President Barack Obama announced that the United States would join the Paris Climate Accord prior to President Donald J. Trump's announcement of the withdrawal of the United …
Basic Elements of Cyber Security for a Smart Terminal Process
2023
Global maritime transportation and logistics systems are essential parts of critical infrastructures in every society, and a crucial part of maritime logistics processes are seaports. Digitalization helps improve the efficiency of terminal systems in the processes of these ports. In Finland this development is going on and it is called SMARTER research program. In the best cases, digitalization can also promote the reduction of emissions by optimizing port operations and enhancing cargo and people flows while improving the experience for all stakeholders. The improvement of port processes relies on the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and as well as on Industria…
Anaerobic on-site wastewater treatment at low temperatures
2005

2018
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli tarkastella opettajien käsityksiä perusopetuksessa opetettavien katsomusaineiden opettamisesta ja dialogisuuden ilmenemistä näissä käsityksissä. Tutkimusta varten haastateltiin 11 opettajaa, jotka opettivat jotakin katsomusainetta perusopetuksen luokilla 1–6. Haastateltujen opettamia katsomusaineita olivat evankelisluterilainen uskonto, elämänkatsomustieto, ortodoksinen uskonto, islam sekä eräs vähemmistöuskonto. Haastattelut tehtiin Uudellamaalla, Keski-Suomessa ja Pohjois-Pohjanmaalla. Tekstimuotoon muutettu haastatteluaineisto analysoitiin fenomenografista tutkimusmenetelmää käyttäen. Tutkimuksen tuloksina esitettävät tulosavaruuden kategoriat kuvaavat…
Re-Thinking the global cosmopolis : an analysis of the un-habitat “city we need” policies in Helsinki And Sydney
2022
This paper contributes to the sustainability debates concerning the UN Habitat III agenda for 2030 of “leaving no one behind.” I mainly focus on how the ideas of the classical cosmopolis are manifested in contemporary urban policies and strategies. I seek to discuss the similarities between the ancient Greek Cynics’ and Stoics’ concept of cosmopolis and the one more or less explicitly expressed in the UN-Habitat manifesto The City We Need 2.0: Towards a New Urban Paradigm, for explaining/showing/understanding. I do so by examining specific case examples based on the UN-Habitat manifesto: the City of Sydney (A City for All: Towards a Socially Just and Resilient Sydney) and the City of Helsin…

Examining Power and Inequality through Informality in Urban Africa
2021
As increasing numbers of Africans live in cities, their strategies for living and surviving challenge prevailing theories and models of urban development. Scholars of poverty and development have given more attention to rural areas than to urban ones, yet urban lifeways need more study because people’s material lives in the city differ significantly from those in rural areas. Urban residents are exposed to more ethnic, religious, and socio-economic diversity than rural residents (Jha et al. 2005) . Urban areas are also highly monetized, and the lives of especially the poorest residents are determined almost entirely by market forces. Money thus becomes the focus of city dwellers’ attention:…
Reading, Writing, Technology, and Embodiment
2022
The insights emerging from embodied (or 4E) cognition (Newen, et al., 2018) hold considerable promise for education, but thus far have had little impact. The widespread implementation of digital technologies in classrooms presents a timely occasion to remedy this situation. The increasing abstraction entailed in the transition from pen and paper to keyboards, and from reading in print books to reading on screens, warrants supplementing extant perspectives on learning and technologies as they are currently represented in curricula and educational policy documents. This chapter helps educators to rethink and redefine the role and meaning of technology in education broadly speaking, and descri…
