Abstract A major risk factor for many flood-related drownings is driving through floodwater. We aimed to understand Australian drivers’ experiences and beliefs with respect to avoid driving through floodwater using the theory of planned behaviour as a framework. Study 1 (N = 23) used a qualitative design to gain an in-depth understanding of individuals’ experiences with driving through floodwater. Study 2 (N = 157) used a survey-based design to identify the factors related to this behaviour including knowledge, beliefs, and social-cognitive factors. This paper sets out to chart underlying assumptions and fundamental axioms of an integrative research edifice for studying language and how it is developed over time as a human- and culture-centered and multifaceted phenomenon. Specifically, invoking Vygotskian sociocultural theory, the Bakhtin circle dialogism, distributed language and cognition and dynamic systems theory, it is argued that language is a purposive, multifaceted, complex, dialogical, and dynamic system that emerges distributively across the interpenetrated web of human somatic and brain activities, socio-cultural umwelt, sociohistorically-fashioned artifacts and realized affordances simultaneously and over time. Maahanmuuttajat työllistyvät Suomessa usein aluksi ammattitaitoaan ja koulutustaan vastaamattomiin sisääntuloammatteihin, joissa kielitaito- ja koulutusvaatimukset ovat vähäiset. Sisääntuloammatteja ei ole vielä tutkittu suomen kielen oppimisen kannalta. Pro gradu -tutkielmani käsittelee aihetta viiden siivousalalla työskentelevän afrikkalaisen maahanmuuttajan näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen kohteena ovat heidän käsityksensä ja kokemuksensa suomen kielen oppimisesta yleisesti ja siivous- tai pesulatyössä.
