Current status and needs for changes in critical care training: the voice of the young cardiologists

2020

Abstract Aims The implementation of the 2013 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Core Curriculum guidelines for acute cardiovascular care (acc) training among European countries is unknown. We aimed to evaluate the current status of acc training among cardiology trainees and young cardiologists (<40 years) from ESC countries. Methods and results The survey (March–July 2019) asked about details of cardiology training, self-confidence in acc technical and non-technical skills, access to training opportunities, and needs for further training in the field. Overall 614 young doctors, 31 (26–43) years old, 55% males were surveyed. Place and duration of acc training differed between countr…

Prevalence of burnout in Polish anesthesiologists and anesthetist nursing professionals: A comparative non-randomized cross-sectional study.

2015

The purpose of the study was to assess the burnout levels in nurses ( N = 161) versus physicians ( N = 373). The levels of burnout were evaluated by the Polish adaptation of the Spanish Burnout Inventory (Cronbach’s alpha > .70). High burnout level was found in 18.63 percent nurses and 12.06 percent anesthesiologists, and critical level in 3.74 percent nurses and 5.90 percent anesthetists. There were statistically significant differences in Burnout global score, Enthusiasm toward the job, Psychological exhaustion, and Indolence subscales between nurses and physicians. No significant differences were found between sexes in any variable.

Surgical treatment of primary gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs): Management and prognostic role of R1 resections

2020

Abstract Background Surgery represents the best treatment for primary gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). The aim of this study is to analyse outcomes of surgical management in order to evaluate the influence of microscopically R1 margins on survival and recurrence in patients affected by GISTs. Methods The study reviewed retrospective data from 74 patients surgically treated for primary GISTs without metastasis at diagnosis. Clinical and pathological findings, surgical procedures, information about follow up and outcomes were analyzed. Results Recurrence rate was low and no patients died in the R1 group during the follow up period. The difference in recurrence free survival for patien…

Focal therapy in localised prostate cancer: Real-world urological perspective explored in a cross-sectional European survey

2018

Introduction: The urological community's opinion over focal therapy (FT) for prostate cancer (PCa) has never been assessed. Our aim was to investigate the current opinion on FT in the European urological community. Methods: A 25 -item questionnaire was devised according to the Cherries checklist and distributed through SurveyMonkey using a web link from November 2016 to October 2017. After a pilot validation (n=40 urologists), the survey was sent through EAU and 9 other national European urological societies mailing list. Twitter was also used. Results: We received 484 replies from 51 countries. Almost half (44.8%, n=217) stated FT would represent a step forward, and 52.0% (n=252) would sug…

Space for intuition - the 'Surprise'-Question in haemato-oncology: Qualitative analysis of experiences and perceptions of haemato-oncologists.

2019

Background: Early integration of palliative care can improve outcomes for people with cancer and non-cancer diagnoses. However, prediction of survival for individuals is challenging, in particular in patients with haematological malignancies who are known to have limited access to palliative care. The ‘Surprise’-Question can be used to facilitate referral to palliative care. Aim: To explore experiences, views and perceptions of haemato-oncologists on the use of the ‘Surprise’-Question in the haemato-oncology outpatients clinics of a university hospital in Germany. Design: A qualitative study using individual semi-structured interviews transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically based on …

Attitudes towards end-of-life issues in intensive care unit among Italian anesthesiologists: a nation-wide survey

2018

Background: The aim of this paper is to collect data on the practice of palliative care, withholding and withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies, and management of end of life (EOL) in Italian intensive care units (ICUs). Methods: Web-based survey among Italian anesthesiologists endorsed by the Italian Society of Anesthesiology Analgesia Reanimation and Intensive Care (SIAARTI). The survey consists of 27 close-ended and 2 open-ended questions. Results: Eight hundred and five persons responded to the full list of questions. The highest proportion of respondents was of 36–45 years of age (34%) and catholic (66%). Almost 70% of responders declared that palliative/supportive care are applied …

The novel video-assisted intubating laryngeal mask Totaltrack compared to the intubating laryngeal mask Fastrach - a controlled randomized manikin st…

2017

BACKGROUND The novel Totaltrack combines a supraglottic airway device with video laryngoscopic tracheal intubation. The intubation laryngeal mask Fastrach is an established device without visual control of intubation. We hypothesized that supraglottic ventilation success with Totaltrack would be similar to Fastrach, but intubation would be performed faster due to visual control of the procedure. METHODS Fifty-five anaesthesiologists were randomized into one of two study arms: Fastrach Totaltrack. After a standardized introduction, six consecutive attempts of supraglottic ventilation and intubation attempts with each of one of the devices were performed on an airway manikin. The combined pri…

A European survey of management approaches in chronic urticaria in children: EAACI Paediatric Urticaria Taskforce

2021

Background: Although well described in adults, there are scarce and heterogeneous data on the diagnosis and management of chronic urticaria (CU) in children (0-18 years) throughout Europe. Our aim was to explore country differences and identify the extent to which the EAACI/GA²LEN/EDF/WAO guideline recommendations for paediatric urticaria are implemented. Methods: The EAACI Taskforce for paediatric CU disseminated an online clinical survey among EAACI paediatric section members. Members were asked to answer 35 multiple choice questions on current practices in their respective centres. Results: The survey was sent to 2,773 physicians of whom 358 (13.8%) responded, mainly paediatric allergist…

Stakeholders? views on online interventions to prevent common mental health disorders in adults implemented into existing healthcare systems in Europe

2021

Abstract Background Online preventive interventions can help to reduce the incidence of mental disorders. Whereas knowledge on stakeholders’ attitudes and factors relevant for successfully integrating online treatment into existing healthcare systems is available, knowledge is scarce for online prevention. Methods Stakeholders from Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Spain were surveyed. Potential facilitators/delivery staff (e.g. psychologists, psychotherapists) completed an online questionnaire (n = 183), policy makers (i.e. from the governing sector or health insurance providers) participated in semi-structured interviews (n = 16) and target groups/potential users of mental illness prevent…
