New configurations of the glassblock have been designed at the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo in order to reduce its U value responding to the latest national and international regulation limits for the thermal insulation of the buildings with glass façades. Implementation of a fast and low cost IR-NDT technique by means of a Square Pulse modulated Lock-In Thermography

This work describes the development of an IR-NDT procedure based on a lock-in signal treatment in the frequency domain to obtain phase-contrast defect signatures. Heat stimulation is obtained by periodically shattering a common low-power halogen lamp. The delivered heat is then modulated as a train of square waves with multi-frequency harmonic content. The proposed lock-in algorithm is able to selectively retrieve phase and amplitude information at various frequencies of the acquired temperature, acting also as a narrow band filter to improve defect-signature to noise ratio. Vanadium dioxide is a material with great potential as an intelligent glazing material. The technology is based on a metal to semiconductor transition (MST) where there is an associated structural change from the higher temperature rutile structure to the lower temperature monoclinic structure. This structural transition results in significant changes in optical properties and electrical conductivity. Galvanic Deposition of Calcium Phosphate/Bioglass Composite Coating on AISI 316L

Calcium phosphate/Bioglass composite coatings on AISI 316L were investigated with regard to their potential role as a beneficial coating for orthopedic implants. These coatings were realized by the galvanic co-deposition of calcium phosphate compounds and Bioglass particles. A different amount of Bioglass 45S5 was used to study its effect on the performance of the composite coatings. The morphology and chemical composition of the coatings were investigated before and after their aging in simulated body fluid. The coatings uniformly covered the AISI 316L substrate and consisted of a brushite and hydroxyapatite mixture. Both phases were detected using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy.…

The essay focuses on the main stereotypes that have characterized the way of representing the figure of the librarian starting from classic American cinema. Hair gathered in a chignon, shirt buttoned at the neck, glasses, are elements that make the surly, solitary, shy and rude librarians easily recognizable who find their climax in the figure of Miss Anderson in Citizen Kane. In the second half of the twentieth century, however, a radical change took place in the stereotypical representation of this figure and the chignon was replaced by loose hair and the character of the harsh woman gave way to that of the sexy icon.
