The role of dry eye disease in cataract and refractive surgery
2019

Visual Health Nanocomposites: Present and Future
2021
Background: In recent years, the therapeutics for eye diseases as retinopathy diabetic, dry eye, glaucoma and contact lenses fabrication are including nanocompounds as ocular drug delivery systems, biomarkers for detection of eye diseases, copper and silver ions that has been incorporated by means of the nanotechnology for the production of less toxic and more effective alternatives. Several compounds such as silver nanoparticles, turmeric-based nanocomposites, neovascularization blockers and nanoparticles extracted from the plant Costus pictus among others have been researched for this purpose. Those compounds are some of the promising research efforts that are studying and will contribute…
Antibodies to alpha B-crystallin, vimentin, and heat shock protein 70 in aqueous humor of patients with normal tension glaucoma and IgG antibody patt…
2007
To show the existence of IgG antibodies against retinal antigens in aqueous humor of normal tension glaucoma patients.Forty-two patients were included in this study. Aqueous humor was collected from control subjects (CO; n = 21) and patients with normal tension glaucoma (NTG; n = 21). Western blot methods against bovine retinal antigens were used to detect the IgG antibody patterns. The complex antibody repertoires were analyzed by multivariate statistical techniques. Mass spectrometry was used to identify the most important antigens.Very complex IgG antibody patterns against retinal antigens were found in all analyzed aqueous humor samples. Our multivariate approach could quantify differen…
Evaluation of presumptive biomarkers of oxidative stress, immune response and apoptosis in primary open-angle glaucoma.
2013
There is growing interest on the correlation among oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis and primary open-angle glaucoma initiation and progression. Reactive oxygen species are formed in the eyes following a wide variety of stressors, and are largely implicated in glaucoma pathogenesis. Immune-inflammatory response mediators have recently become a target of ophthalmologic concern, including glaucoma. Much attention has been derived to the role of specific pro and anti-apoptotic molecules in glaucoma. This article reviews the early evidence suggesting that reactive oxygen species, immune inflammatory response mediators, and apoptogenic molecules are engaged in glaucoma disease. Moreover,…
24S-hydroxycholesterol and cholesterol-24S-hydroxylase (CYP46A1) in the retina: from cholesterol homeostasis to pathophysiology of glaucoma.
2011
http://www.sciencedirect.com/; International audience; Free cholesterol is the predominant form of cholesterol in the neural retina. The vertebrate neural retina exhibits its own capacity to synthesize cholesterol and meets its demand also by taking it from the circulation. Defects in cholesterol synthesis and trafficking in the neural retina has detrimental consequences on its structure and function, highlighting the crucial importance of maintaining cholesterol homeostasis in the retina. Our purpose was to give a review on the functioning of the retina, the role of cholesterol and cholesterol metabolism therein, with special emphasis on cholesterol-24S-hydroxylase (CYP46A1). Similar to th…
The role of neuroinflammation in the pathogenesis of glaucoma neurodegeneration
2020
The chapter is a review enclosed in the volume "Glaucoma: A pancitopatia of the retina and beyond." No cure exists for glaucoma. Knowledge on the molecular and cellular alterations underlying glaucoma neurodegeneration (GL-ND) includes innovative and path-breaking research on neuroinflammation and neuroprotection. A series of events involving immune response (IR), oxidative stress and gene expression are occurring during the glaucoma course. Uveitic glaucoma (UG) is a prevalent acute/chronic complication, in the setting of chronic anterior chamber inflammation. Managing the disease requires a team approach to guarantee better results for eyes and vision. Advances in biomedicine/biotechnolog…
VisuMax®femtosecond laser for corneal refractive surgery
2008
Femtosecond lasers are increasingly present in ophthalmologic surgical theaters for a variety of reasons. These include faster and better visual outcomes, increased accuracy and predictability for corneal flap thickness in laser in situ keratomileusis procedures. Recent applications of modern femtosecond lasers have broadened the range of uses: keratoplasty, intrastromal segment insertion and even glaucoma and presbyopia surgery. This device profile provides an overview of the advantages of femtosecond lasers in ophthalmic surgery, paying special attention to the new VisuMax® femtosecond laser from Zeiss/Meditec.
