Abstract Extended residual persistence of the pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) raises concerns about its long-term neurotoxic effects. Little is known, however, about DDT toxicity during the early stages of neural development. This study demonstrated that DDT-induced apoptosis of mouse embryonic neuronal cells is a caspase-9-, caspase-3-, and GSK-3β-dependent process, which involves p,p’ -DDT-specific impairment of classical ERs. Glycogen phosphorylase (EC 2.4.1.1) of Manduca sexta flight muscle was separated into three distinct peaks of activity on diethylaminoethyl-Sephacel. In fact, both IGF-1 and IL6-like cytokines induce hypertrophic and antiapoptotic signals in cardiomyocytes through PI3K-dependent Akt activation. Overexpression of GSK3β in transgenic mice induces learning deficits and some features associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), including dentate gyrus (DG) atrophy. Here, we assessed whether these mice also recapitulate DG atrophy as well as impaired neurogenesis reported in AD. Ultrastructural analysis revealed that there were fewer and more disorganized neurogenic niches in these animals, coupled with an increase in the proportion of immature neurons. Mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2 (IDH1/2) have been discovered in several cancer types and cause the neurometabolic syndrome D2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (D2HGA). The mutant enzymes exhibit neomorphic activity resulting in production of D2-hydroxyglutaric acid (D-2HG). To study the pathophysiological consequences of the accumulation of D-2HG, we generated transgenic mice with conditionally activated IDH2R140Q and IDH2R172K alleles. Lead is neither essential nor beneficial to living organisms; all existing data show that its metabolic effects are adverse. Lead is toxic to all phyla of aquatic biota. Most of the lead discharged into surface water is rapidly incorporated into suspended and bottom sediments. The American red crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, lives in a wide range of environmental conditions that include highly polluted waters. Abstract 1. 1. The changes in the biochemical composition of gills, hepatopancreas and muscle after exposure to 0.25 mg Hg/l were studied in Procambarus clarkii . 2. 2. Sublethal exposure to mercury in P. clarkii resulted in significant decreases in protein concentration and caloric concentration in gills over the 96 hr period. Glycogen/lipid and glycogen/protein ratios increased after 48 and 96 hr of mercury exposure. 3. 3. Lipid and caloric concentration in the hepatopancreas were significantly lower in 96 hr mercury exposed group. 4. 4. Glycogen concentration in muscle was depleted as consequence of 96 hr mercury exposure.

Two-year-old whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) were exposed for 30 days to episodic iron overload in iron-rich humic water (5%) supplemented with inorganic iron (5 mg FeL(-1)). Two parallel laboratory exposures were performed, one under conditions simulating winter and the other under conditions simulating spring.
