Host-parasite interactions are characterized by trade-offs that involve both plastic and microevolutionary responses. On one hand, while immunity is essential to fight parasites, it can also cause damage to the host, leading to autoimmunity and inflammatory diseases. Rectal stump washout with cytolytic agents is recommended and usually performed during anterior rectal or rectosigmoid resection. The use of a linear stapler instrument during ultralow anterior resection makes the placement of pelvic clamps difficult for rectal stump washout prior to resection. The objective of this work is to demonstrate the use of a simple procedure, the occlusive tourniquet for rectal stump washout. Abstract Video projectors allow interesting applications in vision sciences since they provide a large projection area. We have colorimetrically characterized a LCoS projector using a mathematical model requiring additivity and constancy of the primaries -a sigmoid function in our case. Significant differences in chromaticity in the CIELAB space, but not in lightness, were found between the center and the corners of the screen. The lack of spatial homogeneity led us to estimate the parameters of the model as a function of spatial position, using different strategies. Abstract Background France stands among high-risk areas for colorectal cancer. Different trends in CRC incidence are reported around the world. The aim of this study was to provide temporal trends in CRC incidence over a 30-year period in a French well-defined population. Methods Between 1976 and 2005, 17,028 new cases were registered by the Burgundy digestive cancer registry. To investigate the impact of averseness, controllability and familiarity of a test situation on the involvement of the endocannabinoid system in the regulation of exploratory behaviour, we tested conventional and conditional cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1)-deficient mice in behavioural paradigms with different emotional load, which depended on the strength of illumination and the ability of the animals to avoid the light stimulus. AbstractThe helminth fauna of the wood mouse,Apodemus sylvaticus, in the Erro River valley (Navarre, Spain) was investigated from a total of 150 mice between February 2001 and July 2002. An overall prevalence of 90.7% was recorded and up to 14 helminth species identified. The most prevalent species was the nematodeHeligmosomoidespolygyrus(78.0%), whereasSyphacia stromawas the species with the highest median abundance (19.8). The detection ofCalodium hepaticum,Rodentolepis stramineaand the larvae ofHydatigera taeniaeformisare significant, since these helminth species could be considered potential human parasites. Continent anal urinary diversion is a therapeutic option in bladder exstrophy. We report our long-term results with the rectosigmoid pouch (Mainz pouch II), a modification of the classic ureterosigmoidostomy.A total of 38 children with a mean age of 5 years (range 0.5 to 17) underwent a Mainz pouch II procedure between 1991 and 2004. Most patients (33) had bladder exstrophy or incontinent epispadias. In 14 children (37%) urinary diversion was performed after failed primary reconstruction. In 6 children conversion was performed from an incontinent type of urinary diversion. Renal function, continence and metabolic changes were analyzed.
