How CPR is like Madonna

2012

The purpose of this panel is to provide a formal forum and opportunity to reflect on the past, discuss the present, and provide direction and inspiration for the future of what we now call Computers and People Research (CPR). To what extent have these early concerns and themes endured? How have they been transformed over five decades of changes in technology, changes in the workplace and global business context, and IT worker demographics? What progress has the CPR community made in addressing these concerns? What new issues has CPR brought forward that were not envisioned by the early CPR pioneers?

Which food for whom?

2015

From lack of food to food excess there are numerous different forms of malnutrition, caused by many determining factors. Improving the nutritional condition of populations therefore is a key task of public health care on a planetary level. It is also an economic challenge. The development of an agro-industrial system over the last sixty years has no doubt contributed to make foods safer, but it has also contributed to the consumption of products which are too fat and too sweet. As a consequence the innovation of healthier foods that are affordable has now become an important challenge. This challenge requires developing a new food engineering approach, notably improving the understanding of…

Functional characterization of two human olfactory receptors expressed in the baculovirus Sf9 insect cell system

2005

Olfactory receptors (ORs) are the largest member of the G-protein-coupled receptors which mediate early olfactory perception in discriminating among thousands of odorant molecules. Assigning odorous ligands to ORs is a prerequisite to gaining an understanding of the mechanisms of odorant recognition. The functional expression of ORs represents a critical step in addressing this issue. Due to limitations in heterologous expression, very few mammal ORs have been characterized, and so far only one is from human origin. Consequently, OR function still remains poorly understood, especially in humans, whose genome encodes a restricted chemosensory repertoire compared with most mammal species. In …

Intellectual Capital Management Increase in Offshoring

2021

Offshoring is a method for companies from automotive software development industry to have access to a larger pool of talents or to reduce the development costs. In order to have success, the management must be prepared for knowledge transfer process that will be different while compared to training a new employee at the headquarters. Many companies fail when this step is made and instead of reducing the costs, the loss can drag down the business even to the bankruptcy. In this paper, it is presented a solution for a systematic knowhow increase for the new offshore team, applicable to the processes of knowledge transfer. Complex trainings and various methods of solving the orders are not re…

A Newcomer's Guide to EICS, the Engineering Interactive Computing Systems Community

2019

[EN] Welcome to EICS, the Engineering Interactive Computing Systems community, PACMHCI/EICS journal, and annual conference! In this short article, we introduce newcomers to the field and to our community with an overview of what EICS is and how it positions with respect to other venues in Human-Computer Interaction, such as CHI, UIST, and IUI, highlighting its legacy and paying homage to past scientific events from which EICS emerged. We also take this opportunity to enumerate and exemplify scientific contributions to the field of Engineering Interactive Computing Systems, which we hope to guide researchers and practitioners towards making their future PACMHCI/EICS submissions successful an…

Job seeker's spatial equilibrium in a fuzzy mathematical framework

1990

This paper incorporates complex behavior in a job seeking strategy model. Since the state of information is imperfect, a job seeker faces an imprecise labor market. His behavior is fuzzy and variable. It is shown how this complex behavior can be described by fuzzy subsets theory and bifurcation analysis. The latter examines the discontinuous phenomena. Then it is proved that a job seeker’s fuzzy equilibrium with a spatial constraint exists.

Protecting Human Subjects in Internet Research

2005

The growth of the Internet as a research venue has led to practical, legal, and ethical problems regarding the protection of human subjects. Among these are difficulty in verifying subjects’ identities, gaining informed consent, and assuring ethically- correct research. The authors summarize the current standards pertaining to the protection of human subjects in online research and present a set of guidelines for dealing ethically, legally, and practically with the issues of privacy and confidentiality, intellectual property, informed consent, and protection from harm. As computer-mediated communications merge and evolve, as the Internet becomes more and more a part of everyday life, and as…
