Theoretical and Observational Aspects in Metric-Affine Gravity
2021
Luego …
Euler characteristic formulas for simplicial maps
2001
In this paper, various Euler characteristic formulas for simplicial maps are obtained, which generalize the Izumiya–Marar formula [ 14 ], the Banchoff triple point formula [ 3 ] and the formula due to Szucs for maps of surfaces into 3-space [ 27 ]. Moreover, we obtain new results about the Euler characteristics of the multiple point sets and the images of generic smooth maps and the numbers of their singularities.
Photon events with missing energy at root s=183 to 189 GeV
2000
The production of single photons has been studied in the reaction e+e- -> gamma + invisible particles at centre-of-mass energies of 183 GeV and 189 GeV. A previously published analysis of events with multi-photon final states accompanied by missing energy has been updated with 189 GeV data. The data were collected with the DELPHI detector and correspond to integrated luminosities of about 51 pb^{-1} and 158 pb^{-1} at the two energies. The number of light neutrino families is measured to be 2.84 +/- 0.15(stat) +/- 0.14(syst). The absence of an excess of events beyond that expected from Standard Model processes is used to set limits on new physics as described by supersymmetric and compos…
Universal Gravitation and the (Un)Intelligibility of Natural Philosophy
2019
This article centers on Hume's position on the intelligibility of natural philosophy. To that end, the controversy surrounding universal gravitation shall be scrutinized. It is very well known that Hume sides with the Newtonian experimentalist approach rather than with the Leibnizian demand for intelligibility. However, what is not clear is Hume's overall position on the intelligibility of natural philosophy. It shall be argued that Hume declines Leibniz's principle of intelligibility. However, Hume does not eschew intelligibility altogether; his concept of causation itself stipulates mechanical intelligibility. peerReviewed
Constraining the Equation of State of Neutron Stars with Genral Relativity
2005
When a radio pulsar breakes down by virtue of magnetodipole emission, its gravitational mass decreases accordingly. If the pulsar in hosted in a binary system, this mass loss will increase the orbital period of the system. We show that this relativistic effect can be indeed observable if the NS is fast and magnetized enough and that, if observed, it will help to put tight constraints on the equation of state of ultradense matter.
Chiral theory of nucleons and pions in the presence of an external gravitational field
2020
We extend the standard second order effective chiral Lagrangian of pions and nucleons by considering the coupling to an external gravitational field. As an application we calculate one-loop corrections to the one-nucleon matrix element of the energy-momentum tensor to fourth order in chiral counting, and next-to-leading order tree-level amplitude of the pion-production in an external gravitational field. We discuss the relation of the obtained results to experimentally measurable observables. Our expressions for the chiral corrections to the nucleon gravitational form factors differ from those in the literature. That might require to revisit the chiral extrapolation of the lattice data on t…
First Results on the Scalar WIMP-Pion Coupling, Using the XENON1T Experiment
2018
We present first results on the scalar coupling of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) to pions from 1 t yr of exposure with the XENON1T experiment. This interaction is generated when the WIMP couples to a virtual pion exchanged between the nucleons in a nucleus. In contrast to most nonrelativistic operators, these pion-exchange currents can be coherently enhanced by the total number of nucleons and therefore may dominate in scenarios where spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions are suppressed. Moreover, for natural values of the couplings, they dominate over the spin-dependent channel due to their coherence in the nucleus. Using the signal model of this new WIMP-pion channel, …
Cuckoo's Eggs in Neutron Stars: Can LIGO Hear Chirps from the Dark Sector?
2018
We explore in detail the possibility that gravitational wave signals from binary inspirals are affected by a new force that couples only to dark matter particles. We discuss the impact of both the new force acting between the binary partners as well as radiation of the force carrier. We identify numerous constraints on any such scenario, ultimately concluding that observable effects on the dynamics of binary inspirals due to such a force are not possible if the dark matter is accrued during ordinary stellar evolution. Constraints arise from the requirement that the astronomical body be able to collect and bind at small enough radius an adequate number of dark matter particles, from the requ…
Critical point Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation
2021
We study Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation with the renormalisation group improved potential in the case when loop corrections generate a feature similar to an inflection point. Assuming that there is a threshold correction for the Higgs quartic coupling $\lambda$ and the top Yukawa coupling $y_t$, we scan the three-dimensional parameter space formed by the two jumps and the non-minimal coupling $\xi$. The spectral index $n_s$ can take any value in the observationally allowed range. The lower limit for the running is $\alpha_s>-3.5\times10^{-3}$, and $\alpha_s$ can be as large as the observational upper limit. Running of the running is small. The tensor-to-scalar ratio is $2.2\tim…
Inertial modes in stratified rotating neutron stars : An evolutionary description
2005
With (non-barotropic) equations of state valid even when the neutron, proton and electron content of neutron star cores is not in beta equilibrium, we study inertial and composition gravity modes of relativistic rotating neutron stars. We solve the relativistic Euler equations in the time domain with a three dimensional numerical code based on spectral methods, in the slow rotation, relativistic Cowling and anelastic approximations. Principally, after a short description of the gravity modes due to smooth composition gradients, we focus our analysis on the question of how the inertial modes are affected by non-barotropicity of the nuclear matter. In our study, the deviation with respect to …
