Unemployment transitions and self-rated health in Europe: A longitudinal analysis of EU-SILC from 2008 to 2011

2015

- The Great Recession of 2008 has led to elevated unemployment in Europe and thereby revitalised the question of causal health effects of unemployment. This article applies fixed effects regression models to longitudinal panel data drawn from the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions for 28 European countries from 2008 to 2011, in order to investigate changes in self-rated health around the event of becoming unemployed. The results show that the correlation between unemployment and health is partly due to a decrease in self-rated health as people enter unemployment. Such health changes vary by country of domicile, and by individual age; older workers have a steeper decli…

Dark shadows of rumination: Finnish young adults' identity profiles, personal goals and concerns

2016

Young adults actively construct their identity by exploring and committing to opportunities through the setting of personal goals. Typically personal goal contents are related to young adults' developmental tasks but sometimes goals are self-focused. This longitudinal study explored personal goal and concern contents in relation to identity profiles among young Finns (N = 577) followed from age 23 to 25. Applying the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale, identity formation was measured at age 23. Latent Profile Analysis yielded five profiles: moderate achievement, moderate diffusion, achievement, diffused diffusion, and reconsidering achievement. Two “dark side” identity profiles, chara…

Intraoperative Evaluation of Reconstruction of the Atrio ventricular Valves by Transesophageal Echocardiography

1987

In a total of 30 operations the mitral valve was reconstructed in 18, the tricuspid valve in 11, and both AV-valves in one patient. The result of reconstruction was tested first in the open arrested heart by injection of crystalloid solution into the appropriate ventricle either through the reconstructed valve or one of the great arteries. Upon termination of cardiopulmonary bypass the valve function was examined in the beating heart by means of transesophageal contrast echocardiography (TEE). For visualization 0.5-1.0 cc of agitated Gelifundol was injected into the ventricle. In 22 patients open testing as well as echocardiographic visualization showed identical and good operative results.…

Infrequent early recanalization of greater saphenous vein after endovenous laser treatment

2003

Abstract Objective The frequency of recanalization of the greater saphenous vein (GSV) after endovenous laser treatment (ELT) is unclear. This study was undertaken to establish the incidence of early recanalization after ELT and to study the histopathologic features of reperfused and excised GSV. Methods One hundred nine GSV in 85 consecutive patients with clinical stage C 2-6 E P,S A S,P,D P R disease were treated with ELT. Twelve months of follow-up with duplex scanning at regular intervals was possible in 104 treated veins (95.4%) in 82 patients (96.5%). Recanalized vessels were removed surgically and examined at histopathology. Results ELT-induced occlusion proved permanent at duplex sc…

Reduced recanalization rates of the great saphenous vein after endovenous laser treatment with increased energy dosing: Definition of a threshold for…

2006

Background Recent reports indicated a correlation between the amount of energy released during endovenous laser treatment (ELT) of the great saphenous vein (GSV) and the success and durability of the procedure. Our objective was to analyze the influence of increased energy dosing on immediate occlusion and recanalization rates after ELT of the GSV. Methods GSVs were treated with either 15 or 30 W of laser power by using a 940-nm diode laser with continuous fiber pullback and tumescent local anesthesia. Patients were followed up prospectively with duplex ultrasonography at day 1 and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Results A total of 114 GSVs were treated with 15 W, and 149 GSVs were treated with …

Endovenous treatment of the great saphenous vein using a 1,320 nm Nd:YAG laser causes fewer side effects than using a 940 nm diode laser.

2005

Limited data are available about treatment-related side effects with respect to laser wavelength in endovenous laser treatment (ELT) of the great saphenous vein (GSV).To compare the results and side effects of a 940 nm diode and a 1,320 nm neodymium:yttium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser.Three patient cohorts (A, B, and C) received ELT of the GSV using a 940 nm diode laser at 15 W (group A) or 30 W (group B) or using a 1,320 nm laser at 8 W (group C). In all cases, energy was administered continuously with constant pullback of the laser fiber under perivenous tumescent local anesthesia. The GSVs of group A (n = 113), group B (n = 136), and group C (n = 33) received ELT. An average linear endo…

Isolated fractures of the greater tuberosity of the proximal humerus

2011

Background and purpose The diagnosis and treatment of isolated greater tuberosity fractures of the proximal humerus is not clear-cut. We retrospectively assessed the clinical and radiographic outcome of isolated greater tuberosity fractures. Patients and methods 30 patients (mean age 58 (26–85) years, 19 women) with 30 closed isolated greater tuberosity fractures were reassessed after an average follow-up time of 3 years with DASH score and Constant score. Radiographic outcome was assessed on standard plain radiographs. Results 14 of 17 patients with undisplaced or slightly displaced fractures (≤ 5 mm) were treated nonoperatively and had good clinical outcome (mean DASH score of 13, mean Co…

Three-year European follow-up of endovenous radiofrequency-powered segmental thermal ablation of the great saphenous vein with or without treatment o…

2011

BackgroundRadiofrequency segmental thermal ablation (RSTA) has become a commonly used technology for occlusion of incompetent great saphenous veins (GSVs). Midterm results and data on clinical parameters are still lacking.MethodsA prospective multicenteral trial monitored 295 RSTA-treated GSVs for 36 months. Clinical control visits included flow and reflux analysis by duplex ultrasound imaging and assessment of clinical parameters according to the CEAP classification and Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS).ResultsA total of 256 of 295 treated GSVs (86.4%) were available for 36 months of follow-up. At 36 months, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed the probability of occlusion was 92.6% a…

A two-cohort feasibility study on polyglycolic acid yarn implantation for abolition of saphenous vein reflux

2017

The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of a polyglycolic acid (PGA) yarn implant for nonthermal ablation of saphenous vein reflux. In two consecutive cohort studies (TAHOE I and TAHOE II), the feasibility of abolition of great saphenous vein (GSV) reflux by implantation of a PGA yarn was tested under ultrasound guidance in 51 and 30 patients, respectively. The use of tumescent local anesthesia was not required. Graduated compression stockings and thrombosis prophylaxis with low-molecular-weight heparin were used for 2 weeks after intervention in the first study only.Of 81 enrolled patients, 77 (95%) were available at 6-month follow-up. Complete occlusion of th…

Three-year follow-up results of the prospective European Multicenter Cohort Study on Cyanoacrylate Embolization for treatment of refluxing great saph…

2021

Abstract Objective Cyanoacrylate closure of refluxing saphenous veins has demonstrated excellent safety and effectiveness results in feasibility and pivotal studies. This article provides the 36-month follow-up results of a prospective, multicenter, nonrandomized cohort study. Methods A total of 70 patients were enrolled in a prospective, multicenter study conducted at seven centers in four European countries and underwent treatment of a solitary refluxing great saphenous vein with endovenous cyanoacrylate embolization without the use of tumescent anesthesia or postprocedure compression stockings. The primary effectiveness end point was freedom from recanalization (closure rate) of the grea…
