The occurrence of Echinorhynchus salmonis Müller, 1784 in benthic amphipods in the Baltic Sea

2015

Abstract: The acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus salmonis Müller, 1784 is a common parasite of salmonid fish, but it has rarely been reported from an intermediate host. Samples of benthic amphipods, Monoporeia affinis (Lindström), were taken from multiple, deep sites (usually below 70 m) in the Gulf of Bothnia over the course of more than a decade and examined for acanthocephalans. Overall, only 0.44% of 23 296 amphipods were infected, all with just a single worm. This prevalence is consistent with several previous reports of acanthocephalans in deep-water, benthic amphipods, but it appears low compared to that often reported for acanthocephalan species infecting littoral amphipods. Parasite oc…

Observación multiescala de la cubierta vegetal mediante Teledetección. Aplicación a Castilla- La Mancha

2014

Oligomeric State and Holding Activity of Hsp60

2023

Similar to its bacterial homolog GroEL, Hsp60 in oligomeric conformation is known to work as a folding machine, with the assistance of co-chaperonin Hsp10 and ATP. However, recent results have evidenced that Hsp60 can stabilize aggregation-prone molecules in the absence of Hsp10 and ATP by a different, “holding-like” mechanism. Here, we investigated the relationship between the oligomeric conformation of Hsp60 and its ability to inhibit fibrillization of the Ab40 peptide. The monomeric or tetradecameric form of the protein was isolated, and its effect on beta-amyloid aggregation was separately tested. The structural stability of the two forms of Hsp60 was also investigated using differentia…

A galectin links the aggregation factor to cells in the sponge (Geodia cydonium) system.

1996

The cDNA for the full-length lectin from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium was cloned. Analysis of the deduced aa sequence revealed that this lectin belongs to the group of galectins. The full-length galectin, which was obtained also in a recombinant form, has an M(r) of 20,877; in the processed form it is a 15 kDa polypeptide. The enriched aggregation factor from G.cydonium also was determined to contain, besides minimal amounts of the galectin, a 140 kDa polypeptide which is involved in cell-cell adhesion. Monoclonal antibodies have been raised against this protein; Fab' fragments prepared from them abolished cell-cell reaggregation. Cell reaggregation experiments revealed that the aggreg…
