Polysaccharide-based silver nanoparticles synthesized by Klebsiella oxytoca DSM 29614 cause DNA fragmentation in E-coli cells

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), embedded into a specific exopolysaccharide (EPS), were produced by Klebsiella oxytoca DSM 29614 by adding AgNO3 to the cultures during exponential growth phase. In particular, under aerobic or anaerobic conditions, two types of silver nanoparticles, named AgNPs-EPS(aer) and the AgNPs-EPS(anaer), were produced respectively. The effects on bacterial cells was demonstrated by using Escherichia coli K12 and Kocuria rhizophila ATCC 9341 (ex Micrococcus luteus) as Gram-negative and Gram-positive tester strains, respectively. Genomic inbreeding estimation in small populations: evaluation of runs of homozygosity in three local dairy cattle breeds

In the local breeds with small population size, one of the most important problems is the increase of inbreeding coefficient (F). High levels of inbreeding lead to reduced genetic diversity and inbreeding depression. The availability of high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays has facilitated the quantification of F by genomic markers in farm animals. Soil organisms are considered drivers of soil ecosystem services (primary productivity, nutrient cycling, carbon cycling, water regulation) associated with sustainable agricultural production. Soil biodiversity was highlighted in the soil thematic strategy as a key component of soil quality. Influence of pitanga leaf extracts on lipid and protein oxidation of pork burger during shelf-life

Abstract The effect of pitanga leaf extracts, as source of natural antioxidants, on physicochemical properties as well as lipid and protein oxidation of pork burgers during storage at 2 ± 1 °C, packed under modified atmosphere, was assessed. Formerly, the in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities as well as the phenolic profile of pitanga leaf extracts were also studied. Evaluation of Alternaria mycotoxins in strawberries: quantification and storage condition

Alternariol (AOH), alternariol methyl ether (AME) and tentoxin (TEN) are Alternaria mycotoxins produced by the most common post-harvest pathogens of fruits. The production of these metabolites depends on several environmental factors, mainly temperature, water activity, pH and the technological treatments that have been applied to the product. Dissecting the role of ADAM10 as a mediator of Staphylococcus aureus α-toxin action

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of bacterial infections in humans, including life-threatening diseases such as pneumonia and sepsis. Its small membrane-pore-forming α-toxin is considered an important virulence factor. By destroying cell–cell contacts through cleavage of cadherins, the metalloproteinase ADAM10 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 10) critically contributes to α-toxin-dependent pathology of experimental S. aureus infections in mice. Moreover, ADAM10 was proposed to be a receptor for α-toxin. Quality characteristics and in vitro digestibility study of barley flour enriched ditalini pasta

A ditalini pasta with a mixture of durum wheat and beta-glucan enriched barley flour (BF) (60/40%, w/w) was found to have a final content of 5% beta-glucan (BF-ditalini). Main quality parameters of BF-ditalini, water uptake and starch-protein texture, were comparable with those of 100% durum wheat ditalini (control). After in vitro simulated intestinal digestion, the content of beta-glucan in the post intestinal (PI) supernatant of BF-ditalini processed with its cooking water (soup) was six fold higher than that of pasta asciutta. Protein-protein interactions can be predicted using coiled coil co-evolution patterns

AbstractProtein-protein interactions are sometimes mediated by coiled coil structures. The evolutionary conservation of interacting orthologs in different species, along with the presence or absence of coiled coils in them, may help in the prediction of interacting pairs. Here, we illustrate how the presence of coiled coils in a protein can be exploited as a potential indicator for its interaction with another protein with coiled coils. The prediction capability of our strategy improves when restricting our dataset to highly reliable, known protein-protein interactions. AbstractSocial animals often share information about the location of resources, such as a food source or a new nest-site. One well-studied communication strategy in ants is tandem running, whereby a leader guides a recruit to a resource. Tandem running is considered an example of animal teaching because a leader adjusts her behaviour and invests time to help another ant to learn the location of a resource more efficiently. A generalization of Kingman's model of selection and mutation and the Lenski experiment.

Kingman’s model of selection and mutation studies the limit type value distribution in an asexual population of discrete generations and infinite size undergoing selection and mutation. This paper generalizes the model to analyze the long-term evolution of Escherichia. coli in Lenski experiment. Weak assumptions for fitness functions are proposed and the mutation mechanism is the same as in Kingman’s model. General macroscopic epistasis are designable through fitness functions. Convergence to the unique limit type distribution is obtained.
