Grip Strength, Neurocognition, and Social Functioning in People WithType-2 Diabetes Mellitus, Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Schizo…

2020

[Background] Frailty is a common syndrome among older adults and patients with several comorbidities. Grip strength (GS) is a representative parameter of frailty because it is a valid indicator of current and long-term physical conditions in the general population and patients with severe mental illnesses (SMIs). Physical and cognitive capacities of people with SMIs are usually impaired; however, their relationship with frailty or social functioning have not been studied to date. The current study aimed to determine if GS is a valid predictor of changes in cognitive performance and social functioning in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus and SMIs.

Proximate Composition and Nutritional Value of Three Macroalgae: Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus vesiculosus and Bifurcaria bifurcata

2017

Proximate composition (moisture, protein, lipid and ash content) and nutritional value (fatty acid, amino acid and mineral profile) of three macroalgae (Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus vesiculosus and Bifurcaria bifurcate) were studied. Chemical composition was significantly (p < 0.001) different among the three seaweeds. In this regard, the B. bifurcata presented the highest fat content (6.54% of dry matter); whereas, F. vesiculosus showed the highest protein level (12.99% dry matter). Regarding fatty acid content, the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were the most abundant followed by saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). On the other hand, the three seawe…

Effects of Long-Term Habitat Protection on Montane Small Mammals: Are Sorex araneus and S. minutus More Sensitive Than Previously Considered?

2022

Protection of natural areas by restricting human activities aims to preserve plant and animal populations and whole communities, ensuring the conservation of biological diversity and enhancement of ecosystem services. Therefore, it is expected that the longer the protection, the stronger the desired effects. We evaluated the responses of small mammals at the population and community levels under protection in the southern Carpathian Mountains. We surveyed small mammals for five years in sites with long- and short-term protection and non-protected. Besides protection status, we included elevation, habitat heterogeneity, and the month of survey as predictors in our models. As response variabl…

Vaccinium macrocarpon (Cranberry)-Based Dietary Supplements: Variation in Mass Uniformity, Proanthocyanidin Dosage and Anthocyanin Profile Demonstrat…

2020

Vaccinium macrocarpon (syn. American Cranberry) is employed in dietary supplements (DS) with the aim to improve urinary tract well-being. This property is linked to the antiadhesion-activity of proanthocyanidins (PACs) against uropathogenic-bacteria. However, the current European legislation has been criticized for being weak and ineffective. Indeed, recent scientific works report mislabeled, contaminated, and adulterated supplements containing dangerous or unknown compounds, or sold at toxic doses. In this work, we analysed 24 DS that claim to contain cranberry, and to have a specific dosage of PACs. Our tests included the control of the good manufacturing practice according to the Europea…

Improved bioaccessibility and antioxidant capacity of olive leaf ( Olea europaea L.) polyphenols through biosorption on Saccharomyces cerevisiae

2016

Abstract Olive ( Olea europaea L.) leaves (OL) are natural by-products that can be used as an advantageous rich source of bioactive compounds, especially polyphenols. This study investigated the potential use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a new carrier of OL antioxidants and a means to protect their bioactivity during simulated gastrointestinal digestion. The biosorption on S. cerevisiae allowed the recovery of 25.17 mg/g and 49.40% of the polyphenols from olive leaf (var. Chemlali ) infusions. Both infusions and suspensions before and after biosorption were analyzed for total soluble polyphenols and total antioxidant capacity (oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and trolox equivalen…

Effect of a dominant-negative form of ADAM10 in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

2009

The alpha-secretase cleaves in the non-amyloidogenic pathway the amyloid-beta protein precursor (AbetaPP) within the region of the amyloid-beta peptides to prevent their formation and aggregation in the brain. Members of the ADAM family (a disintegrin and metalloprotease) are the main candidates for physiologically relevant alpha-secretases. We recently demonstrated that overexpression of ADAM10 in mice transgenic for human AbetaPP (ADAM10 x APP[V717I]) alleviated functional deficits related to Alzheimer's disease. To further demonstrate that this is due to the specific activity of alpha-secretase, we characterized mice overexpressing an inactive form of ADAM10 (ADAM10[E384A]; ADAM10-dn). T…

Report of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) on the review and update of Dietary Recommendations fo…

2020

*This record is given in both English and Spanish Until now, the established dietary patterns have not demonstrated to achieve the goal of maintaining good health in the general population. In addition to the human health, the current dietary models, called “Sustainable Healthy Diets”, take into account the concept of sustainability in all its aspects. With this goal in mind the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) encourage the development of national food-based dietary recommendations within the specific context of the Sustainable Healthy Diets, taking into account the social, cultural, economic, ecological and environmental…

Report of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) on the presence and safety of plastics as contaminants…

2020

* This record is given in both English and Spanish. The use of plastics is widespread in both industry and domestic life as food packaging material and as a material that comes into contact with food. Therefore, plastics and their environmental impact, especially in the marine environment, arouse great interest and concern. Microplastics have been the focus of most of the studies carried out so far due to their growing presence in the natural environment and their potential to be transferred between trophic levels. It is necessary not only to make an exhaustive assessment of the presence of microplastics in the environment and food, but also of their effects on human’s health. This report a…

Le prix des paysages périurbains

2007

2008

Agriculture contributes to almost 20% of greenhouse gas emissions in France, and the same applies for most EU countries. This is due to a large extent to N2O emission after N fertilizer application, but the emissions are very variable in space and time, due mainly to the variability in environmental conditions. However, the figure of the relationship between agriculture and greenhouse effect is more complex. First a significant fraction of emitted N2O does not occur where N has been applied, but is due to indirect emissions in wetlands or forest where N is transferred by natural pathways. This implies the need to make an assessment at larger scale than the field where N is applied. Many oth…
