Renewable polyol obtained by microwave-assisted alcoholysis of epoxidized soybean oil: Preparation, thermal properties and relaxation process
2019
[EN] The soybean oil polyol (SOP) use as feedstock in the polyurethane industry has been recently emphasized due to its excellent resistance to hydrolysis, which is also applicable in coatings and thermal insulation. In this article, the SOP was obtained by a very fast microwave-assisted alcoholysis of epoxidized soybean oil (ESO). The preparation method, thermal properties, and relaxation process were evaluated. High yields as opening and consumption epoxy group and selectivity of 99.8 mol%, 985 mol%, and 71.2 mol% were obtained. Through titrations, nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatography were identified parameters as 0.32 mg KOH.g(-1) acid number, 190 mg KOH.g(-1) hyd…
Molecular basis of the effects of argan oil on mitochondrial and peroxisomal metabolism of the fatty acids and inflammation
2012
The objective of this thesis work was to explore the molecular basis of Argan Oil (AO) effects on the mitochondrial and peroxisomal lipid metabolism and to elucidate its anti-inflammatory potential. We thus showed, initially, that the artisanal method preparation preserved the antioxidant properties of AO preventing the oxidation of the ferulic acid, by contrast to AO of commercial origin. Then, the treatment by the AO or lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of human fibroblasts, the cellular model of pseudo-neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy (P-NALD), revealed for the AO that peroxisomes proliferation is independent from the activation of the nuclear receptor PPARα and the co-activator PGC-1α. On the othe…
Innovative non-thermal technologies affecting potato tuber and fried potato quality
2019
Abstract Background Potatoes are important tubers for human consumption, providing an essential source of energy and great nutritional characteristics for human health. However, before consumption, potato tubers need to be stored and processed. As frying is the most common technique used in potato processing, fried potato is the most important processed potato product. Some food characteristics, provided by the frying process, are considered desirable, but others are harmful to human health and, thereby the main challenge is to reduce the formation of the undesirable characteristics, without compromising the sensorial attributes. Scope and approach In this review, the origin, economic impor…
Double Thermoresponsive Block Copolymers Featuring a Biotin End Group
2010
A poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether methacrylate)-block-poly(N-isopropyl methacrylamide) (POEGMA-b-PNIPMAM) block copolymer with a biotin end group on the PNIPMAM block as a biotarget was synthesized as a model system for temperature-controlled polymer immobilization. The synthesis was based on RAFT polymerization followed by postpolymerization modification of an activated ester precursor block and an exchange of the dithioester end group within one step. NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and turbidimetry measurements were performed to investigate the stimulus-responsive properties. The double thermoresponsive POEGMA-b-PNIPMAM with biot…
Molecular Recognition by Hydrogen Bonding in Polyelectrolyte Multilayers
1997
Functional polyanions were prepared by copolymerization of sulfopropyl acrylate and sulfopropyl methacrylate with monomers bearing triaminopyrimidine or barbituric acid functionalities, respectively. Functionalized polyelectrolyte multilayers were assembled from these copolymers by stepwise alternating adsorption with poly(choline methacrylate). These multilayers are suited for molecular recognition of substrates that are complementary to the functional groups incorporated. Thus, multilayers containing triaminopyrimidine moieties selectively bind barbituric acid, and vice versa, when exposed to solutions of the 1:1 complex of barbituric acid and triaminopyrimidine. The molecular recognition…
Poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-block-poly(acrylic acid) triblock terpolymers with highly asymmetric hydrophilic blocks: synthesis …
2013
The synthesis and aggregation behaviour in aqueous media of novel amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-block-poly(acrylic acid) (PEO–PnBA–PAA) triblock terpolymers were studied. Terpolymers composed of two highly asymmetric hydrophilic PEO (113 monomer units) and PAA (10–17 units) blocks, and a longer soft hydrophobic PnBA block (163 or 223 units) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) of n-butyl acrylate and tert-butyl acrylate (tBA), followed by selective hydrolysis of the PtBA blocks. These terpolymers are not directly soluble in water but form defined spherical micelles by employing the dialysis method as confirmed by dynamic light scatt…
Preparation and Promotion of Fruit Growth in Kiwifruit of Fluorinated N-Phenyl-N‘-1,2,3-thiadiazol-5-yl Ureas
2004
Seventeen phenyl-fluorinated analogues of thidiazuron [N-phenyl-N'-(1,2,3-thiadiazol-5-yl)urea, TDZ] have been prepared and characterized. The effects of each fluorinated urea on growth and quality of kiwifruits (Actinidia deliciosa) were evaluated by comparison with untreated (control) and TDZ-treated fruits. The results obtained showed a clear dependence of the growth-promoting activity of these fluorinated ureas on the pattern and degree of fluorine substitution in the phenyl ring. The most effective for promoting fruit growth was N-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)-N'-(1',2',3'-thiadiazol-5'-yl)urea at 25 ppm (at harvest, treated fruits were 58% heavier than untreated ones) followed by N-(3,5…
Model Predictive Control for Shunt Active Filters With Fixed Switching Frequency
2016
This paper presents a modification to the classical Model Predictive Control algorithm, named Modulated Model Predictive Control, and its application to active power filters. The proposed control is able to retain all the advantages of a Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control whilst improving the generated waveforms harmonic spectrum. In fact a modulation algorithm, based on the cost function ratio for different output vectors, is inherently included in the MPC. The cost function-based modulator is introduced and its effectiveness on reducing the current ripple is demonstrated. The presented solution provides an effective and straightforward single loop controller, maintaining an excel…
Studies on the Effect of Cell Division-inhibiting Herbicides on Unialgal and Mixed Algal Cultures
1989
The effect of two cell division inhibiting herbicides on unialgal and mixed algal cultures was studied in laboratory tests. The herbicides studied were trifluralin (analytical grade) and the active ingredient as well as the preparation (80 % a.i.) of diphenamid. The three green algal species used were Selenastrum capricornutum PRINTZ, Scenedesmus quadricauda (TURP.) BREB., Oocystis parva W. et G. S. WEST. The response of algae to herbicides was determined by cell counting, and measured by turbidity (750 nm) and the 02-production of some of the treated cultures. The EC50-value (96 h) of trifluralin to Selenastrum capricornutum was 3.3 mg/l. There were differences in the sensitivity of the th…
