CATCHING FALLING OBJECTS: THE ROLE OF THE CEREBELLUM IN PROCESSING SENSORY-MOTOR ERRORS THAT MAY INFLUENCE UPDATING OF FEEDFORWARD COMMANDS. AN fMRI …

2011

Import JabRef | WosArea Neurosciences and Neurology; International audience; The human motor system continuously adapts to changes in the environment by comparing differences between the brain's predicted outcome of a certain behavior and the observed outcome. This discrepancy signal triggers a sensory-motor error and it is assumed that the cerebellum is a key structure in updating this error and associated feedforward commands. Using fMRI, the aim of the present study was to determine the main cerebellar structures that are involved in the processing of sensory-motor errors and in updating feedforward commands when simply catching a falling ball without displacement of the hand. Subjects o…

Men with elevated testosterone levels show more affiliative behaviors during contact with women

2012

Testosterone (T) is thought to play a key role in male–male competition and courtship in many vertebrates, but its precise effects are unclear. We explored whether courtship behaviour in humans is modulated and preceded by changes in T. Pairs of healthy male students first competed in a non-physical contest in which their T levels became elevated. Each participant then had a short, informal interaction with either an unfamiliar man or woman. The sex of the stimulus person did not affect the participants' behaviour overall. However, in interactions with women, those men who had experienced a greater T increase during the contest subsequently showed more interest in the woman, engaged in more…

Prognostic Value of Immunohistochemical Expression of Beta-1 Integrin in Pancreatic Carcinoma

1999

<i>Background: </i>Prognostically relevant factors based on the histological assessment of the resected pancreas are known. However, the knowledge of additional factors associated with the prognosis is helpful in planning the therapy for an individual patient. β1 Integrin expression is known to have a prognostic influence in some malignant tumors. No data are, however, available on the prognostic value of β1 integrins in pancreatic carcinoma. <i>Method: </i>We investigated paraffin-embedded specimens of 19 patients undergoing surgical treatment for periampullary carcinoma and of 42 patients for ductal pancreatic carcinoma…

A new approach to examine the relationships between sensory and gas chromatography-olfactometry data using generalized procrustes analysis applied to…

2003

Six French Chardonnay wines were submitted to both sensory and combined headspace/gas chromatography-olfactometry analyses. The detection frequencies allowed five hierarchical levels to be distinguished: P25, the odorant areas (OAs) having a detection frequencyor =25% (the complete olfactogram without the odor noise); P40,or =40%; P55,or =55%; P70,or =70%; and P85,or =85%. Moreover, the detection frequencies were analyzed to distinguish 21 discriminative OAs. Wines tested by sensory analysis and the headspace samples analyzed by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) were described by a heterogeneous vocabulary distributed into nine overall classes of descriptors. The new statistical treatm…

Comparison of service tactic formation on players’ movements and point outcome between national and beginner level padel

2021

The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of service tactic formation on players’ movements and point outcome at two different performance levels. The sample contained 2,148 points corresponding to 18 matches from two male padel indoor tournaments. Players were classified according to their game level: high-level (N = 36; age = 33.3 ± 6.9 years) and beginner (N = 36; age = 35.4 ± 6.8 years). Variables pertaining to service tactic formation (conventional or Australian), point outcome and movement patterns were analysed from the matches through systematic observation. The results showed how high-level players used a significantly higher percentage of the Australian formation than beg…

Grip force regulates hand impedance to optimize object stability in high impact loads

2011

Anticipatory grip force adjustments are a prime example of the predictive nature of motor control. An object held in precision grip is stabilized by fine adjustments of the grip force against changes in tangential load force arising from inertia during acceleration and deceleration. When an object is subject to sudden impact loads, prediction becomes critical as the time available for sensory feedback is very short. Here, we investigated the control of grip force when participants performed a targeted tapping task with a hand-held object. During the initial transport phase of the movement, load force varied smoothly with acceleration. In contrast, in the collision, load forces sharply incre…

Family members' lived experiences of everyday life after intensive care treatment of a loved one: a phenomenological hermeneutical study.

2015

Aims and Objectives To illuminate relatives’ experiences of everyday life after a loved one's stay in an intensive care unit. Background Relatives of intensive care patients experience considerable stress that can have a long-lasting effect on their everyday lives. Relatives frequently report anxiety, depression and complicated grief as a result of their experiences in the intensive care unit. Design A qualitative design was chosen. Methods Thirteen relatives were interviewed 3 months to 1 year after the discharge or death of an intensive care unit patient. A phenomenological hermeneutical method was used to explore family members’ lived experiences upon returning home after their loved one…

Predicting Professional Quality of Life and Life Satisfaction in Spanish Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study

2020

Background: Dealing with suffering, grief, and death on a daily basis, together with the particular working conditions, may produce high levels of burnout in nurses, and hinder their well-being. The purpose of this research is to study the effect of self-care and self-compassion on nurses&rsquo

Effects of combined hand-arm vibration and cold on skin temperature

1989

Under laboratory conditions 14 healthy male subjects were exposed to hand-arm vibration (ahzw = 6.3 m/s2) at different air temperatures (5 degrees, 12 degrees, 18 degrees and 25 degrees C). Static load (grip force 15 N, push force 40 N) was kept constant. Finger tip temperature as an indirect criterion of the peripheral blood circulation was measured. As expected, low air temperatures (5 degrees, 12 degrees and 18 degrees C) cause a strong decrease of skin temperature. Under additional stress of vibration connected with static load, a further decrease of the mean skin temperature was noted. At this, static load proved to have a predominant influence on the acute diminution of skin temperatu…

The remapping of time by active tool-use

2015

Multiple, action-based space representations are each based on the extent to which action is possible toward a specific sector of space, such as near/reachable and far/unreachable. Studies on tool-use revealed how the boundaries between these representations are dynamic. Space is not only multidimensional and dynamic, but it is also known for interacting with other dimensions of magnitude, such as time. However, whether time operates on similar action-driven multiple representations and whether it can be modulated by tool-use is yet unknown. To address these issues, healthy participants performed a time bisection task in two spatial positions (near and far space) before and after an active …
