Transitions in Herd Management of Semi-Domesticated Reindeer in Northern Finland

In northern Finland, reindeer-herd management has experienced two major transitions: extensification of intensive herding, and development of supplementary/corral feeding in winter. The transitions were studied in six herding associations in different parts of the Finnish reindeer management area. It was suggested that intensive herding turns into more extensive forms as the reasons for intensive herding (predation, reindeer disappearing to foreign areas, protection of agricultural fields) gradually ceased to exist. The essay outlines the peculiarities of the Course of Studies in Architecture held by the University of Palermo in Agrigento for about 20 years. The complex situation of the city and of its province have been sigled out and read by architectural design courses. Themes focused have been over the years: the overlapping of archaelogy and architecture; the ghost role of the old city; the overwhelming presence of infrastructures; the orographic condition of the multi centered city.

The essay concerns the results of the archaeological excavation carried out in the area East of the s.c. "hypogeum L" in the Early Christian cemetery of Agrigentum in the year 1999; it contains, also, the catalogue of the Medieval coarse and cooking wares (ollae) found in the area, and the different types of supports used in the ceramic workshop established in the Late Antique cemetery during the Middle Ages.

Halloysite Nanotubes Loaded with Calcium Hydroxide: Alkaline Fillers for the Deacidification of Waterlogged Archeological Woods

A novel green protocol for the deacidifying consolidation of waterlogged archaeological woods through aqueous dispersions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1500 and halloysite nanotubes containing calcium hydroxide has been designed. First, we prepared functionalized halloysite nanotubes filled with Ca(OH)2 in their lumen. The controlled and sustained release of Ca(OH)2 from the halloysite lumen extended its neutralization action over time, allowing the development of a long-term deacidification of the wood samples. Trenta anni di scavi e ricerche nell'area della necropoli paleocristiana di Agrigento hanno evidenziato la presenza di una arteria che servì il cimitero dal IV all'VIII secolo. La strada riutilizzava il tracciato di un acquedotto di età greca che alimentava una serie di cisterne a loro volta trasformate in spazi funerari privati o comunitari. Dopo l'abbandono e la distruzione e del cimitero, nell' XI secolo, nell'area fu impiantata un'officina ceramica per la produzione di vasellame di uso comune.

Durante uno scavo archeologico, molto spesso sorge la necessità della messa in sicurezza, tramite una serie di interventi puntuali mirati alla stabilizzazione dell’integrità strutturale, dei reperti rinvenuti; come nel caso della Casa III M del quartiere Ellenistico Romano di Agrigento, un contesto di crollo in cui sono stati rinvenuti reperti ad intonaco. This paper aims at an interdisciplinary, archaeological and archaeometric characterisation of the western Greek amphorae series produced in late Archaic and Classical-period Agrigento (southern Sicily). The research is based on a macroscopic examination, according to the standardised methods of Fabrics of the Central Mediterranean (FACEM), combined with petrographic analyses of 21 amphorae samples of presumed local fabric found in Agrigento itself.
