Conversion-electron study of 0+excitations in208Pb

2005

The 208Pb(p,p'e−) reaction has been studied at a proton energy of 17.3 MeV. Singles data show E0 transitions from the 0+2 and 0+3 states at 4868 and 5241 keV, respectively, to the ground state. Proton–electron gated spectra indicate that few electrons from the 0+2 state are in coincidence with backscattered protons, while those from the 0+3 state are somewhat more abundant. From the singles spectra, an upper limit for the E3(0+3 → 3−1)/E0(0+3 → 0+1) branching ratio of less than four has been measured. This observation is in agreement with previous predictions for a two-phonon octupole excitation.

Opening of the Z=40 subshell gap and the double-beta decay of 100Mo

2002

Abstract Experimental and theoretical study of the β − decay of 100 Nb to the two-quasiparticle states in 100 Mo suggests the opening of the Z =40 subshell gap in the proton pf-0g 9/2 shell for isobars near 100 Mo. Assuming the opening of the Z =40 subshell gap both for 100 Mo and 100 Ru enables the study of the effects of this subshell gap upon the two-neutrino and neutrinoless double-beta-decay rates of 100 Mo to the ground state and excited states in 100 Ru. It is found that the influence of the opening of the Z =40 gap has very minor effects on the beta-decay and double-beta-decay feeding of the 0 + and 2 + states of 100 Ru.

In-beam and decay spectroscopy of very neutron deficient iridium nuclei

2005

Iridium nuclei at and beyond the proton drip line have been studied via fusion evaporation reactions. A reaction of 92Mo(78Kr, p2n) at a beam energy of 360 MeV and target thickness 500 µg cm−2 was employed to study 167,167mIr. A reaction of 112Sn(58Ni, p2n) at a beam energy of 266 MeV and target thickness 500 µg cm−2 was used to study 169,169mIr. The experiments were performed at the University of Jyvaskyla utilizing the RITU separator in conjunction with the focal plane GREAT spectrometer and the JUROGAM Ge array at the target position. Excited states feeding both the ground state and isomeric state in 169Ir, excited states feeding the ground state of 167Ir and the ground state alpha decay…

Magnetic hyperfine anomaly in muonic193Ir

1977

The nuclear decay of the 5/2+ 139 keV state to the 3/2+ ground state was observed in muonic193Ir. The hyperfine splitting of the 3/2+ state and 5/2+ state was determined to be 640±100 eV and 1280±160 eV, respectively. The ground state splitting is about twice that of a point nucleus, an anomaly never observed this large. This is mainly due to the different radial distribution of spin and orbital magnetization of a d3/2 proton configuration for which these contributions nearly cancel to zero in the magnetic moment. But calculations including configuration mixing and coupling to a vibrating or a deformed core show deviations. The groundstate anomaly is in line with that observed by the Mossba…

Shell structure beyond the proton drip line studied via proton emission from deformed 141Ho

2008

Abstract Fine structure in proton emission from the 7 / 2 − [ 523 ] ground state and from the 1 / 2 + [ 411 ] isomer in deformed nucleus 141Ho was studied by means of fusion-evaporation reactions and digital signal processing. Proton transitions to the first excited 2+ state in 140Dy, with the branching ratio of I p g s ( 2 + ) = 0.9 ± 0.2 % and I p m ( 2 + ) = 1.7 ± 0.5 % , were observed. The data are analyzed within the non-adiabatic weak coupling model assuming a large quadrupole deformation of the daughter nucleus 140Dy as predicted by the self-consistent theory. Implications of this result on coexistence effects around N = 74 are discussed. Significant modifications of the proton shell…

Spectroscopy of the proton drip-line nucleus 203Fr

2013

The nucleus ${}^{203}$Fr has been studied through $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray and electron spectroscopy, using the recoil-decay tagging technique. A 13/2${}^{+}$ state, with a half-life of 0.37(5) $\ensuremath{\mu}$s, has been observed in ${}^{203}$Fr. Both the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay branch and the internal de-excitation of the 1/2${}^{+}$ isomer in ${}^{203}$Fr have been studied. Furthermore, the corresponding 1/2${}^{+}$ state, with a half-life of 0.31(8) s, has been found in ${}^{199}$At. In addition, transitions feeding the 9/2${}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ground state of ${}^{203}$Fr have been identified. The observed level pattern suggests that the ground state is still spherical.

Coherent, semicoherent and incoherent pion production in heavy-ion reactions

1996

Abstract Two types of coherent pion production in heavy-ion collisions are studied and calculations are performed for 12C against 12C collisions. The first one, doubly coherent production, produces a pion in one nucleus leaving it in its ground state, while the second nucleus is excited to the 1+, T = 1 state. The second process, semicoherent production, also leaves in its ground state the nucleus where the pion is produced while the second one is broken. The cross sections for forward pions are compared to the standard incoherent production process. We observe that at energies below 130 MeV/A the semicoherent process dominates the cross section for forward pion angles while at large energi…

Dependence of the C12(γ→,pd) reaction on photon linear polarisation

2007

Abstract The sensitivity of the C 12 ( γ → , pd ) reaction to photon linear polarisation has been determined at MAMI, giving the first measurement of the reaction for a nucleus heavier than 3He. Photon asymmetries and cross sections were measured for E γ = 170 to 350 MeV. For E γ below the Δ resonance, reactions leaving the residual 9Be near its ground state show a positive asymmetry of up to 0.3, similar to that observed for 3He suggesting a similar reaction mechanism for the two nuclei.
