Ultrasound-guided spinal fracture repositioning

1998

The management of narrowing spinal fragments in the operative treatment of spinal fractures remains an open question, in particular when the procedure is performed by a posterior approach. This article describes the use of intraoperative ultrasonography during spinal surgery. From 1990 to 1997, 116 spinal fractures were treated operatively at our clinic. Stabilization of the spine was achieved with the AO fixateur interne and the AO USS, respectively (Synthes, D-79224, Umkirch, Germany). For 60 cases who had a fractured posterior vertebral surface dislocated into the spinal canal, we used intraoperative ultrasonography to monitor the repositioning of the narrowing fragments. The patients un…

Screening of colorectal cancer: present and future

2017

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in males and second in females, and the fourth most common cause of cancer death worldwide. Currently, about 60-70% of diagnosed cases in symptomatic patients are detected at an advanced stage of disease. Earlier stage detection through the use of screening strategies would allow for better outcomes in terms of reducing the disease burden. Areas covered: The aim of this paper is to review the current published evidence from literature which assesses the performance and effectiveness of different screening tests for the early detection of CRC. Expert commentary: Adequate screening strategies can reduce CRC incidence and mortality. In th…

Update on the principles and novel local and systemic therapies for the treatment of non-infectious uveitis.

2012

Ocular inflammatory disorders constitute a sight-threatening group of diseases that might be managed according to their severity. Their treatment guidelines experience constant changes with new agents that improve the results obtained with former drugs. Nowadays we can make use of a five step protocol in which topical, periocular and systemic corticosteroids remain as the main therapy for non-infectious uveitis. In addition, immunosuppresive drugs can be added in order to enhance the anti-inflammatory effects and to play the role of corticosteroid-sparing agents. These can be organized in four other steps: cyclosporine and methotrexate in a second one; azathioprine, mycophenolate and tacrol…

Imaging modalities and treatment of paediatric upper tract urolithiasis: A systematic review and update on behalf of the EAU urolithiasis guidelines …

2020

Prompt diagnosis and treatment of paediatric urolithiasis are required to avoid long term sequelae of renal damage. To systematically review the literature regarding the diagnostic imaging modalities and treatment approaches for paediatric urolithiasis.PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus and Web of Science were systematically searched from January 1980-January 2019. 76 full-text articles were included.Ultrasound and Kidney-Ureter-Bladder radiography are the baseline diagnostic examinations. Non-contrast Computed Tomography (CT) is the second line choice with high sensitivity (97-100%) and specificity (96-100%). Magnetic Resonance Urography accounts only for 2% of pediatric stone imaging studies. …

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy with ultrasound-guided lithostar plus.

1992

Abstract Since 1989, the Siemens lithostar plus, an upgrade of the lithostar with the ultrasonically guided overhead module, has been available for clinical use. This unit may be used for the treatment of either biliary or urinary calculi. We report on 75 patients with urinary calculi treated between March 1989 and June 1990 with the lithostar overhead module. Stone localization showed a rate of: caliceal stones 33.5%, pelvic stones 44%, upper ureteral stones 9.3% and lower ureter stones 13%. The overall disintegration rate was 86%, with a stone-free rate after 3 months of 78%.

The pharmacological rationale for combining muscarinic receptor antagonists and beta-adrenoceptor agonists in the treatment of airway and bladder dis…

2014

Highlights • Muscarinic receptors increase smooth muscle tone in airways and urinary bladder. • β-Adrenoceptors relax smooth muscle tone and oppose muscarinic contraction. • Opposition involves transmitter release, signal transduction and receptor expression. • This supports the combined use of muscarinic antagonists and β-adrenoceptor agonists.

Management of chronic urticaria in children: a clinical guideline

2019

Abstract The aim of this guidance is to provide recommendations to clinicians and other interested parties on chronic urticaria in children. The Italian Society for Pediatrics (SIP), the Italian Society for Allergy and Immunology (SIAIP), the Italian Society for Pediatric dermatology (SIDerP) convened a multidisciplinary panel that prepared clinical guidelines for diagnosis and management of chronic urticaria in childhood. Key questions on epidemiology, natural history, diagnosis, and management were developed. The literature was systematically searched and evaluated, recommendations were rated and algorithms for diagnosis and treatment were developed. The recommendations focus on identific…

Multi Regression Analysis of Skin Temperature Variation During Cycling Exercise

2017

In the last years, infrared thermography (IRT) has become a popular technique to determine human skin temperature during exercise [1–3]. IRT presents several applications in sport science such as the detection of injury, the thermophysiology assessment, the sport clothing assessment/design, or its application in equestrian sport, among others [3]. However, IRT in sports is still a recent topic and there are many fundamental discussions concerning different methodological aspects, being one of them the analysis of the thermal data [4].

Physiological problems of teleost ambisexuality

1988

The normal occurrence of spontaneous sex inversion among teleosts is a recent item within current concepts on vertebrate reproductive physiology. Investigations on the subject are mostly descriptive and deal with morphological and behavioral aspects. The concept of social control of sex inversion has been received with great interest. However, research on physiological processes that take place inside a fish when it changes sex must be rated as fragmentary. Steroid hormones are supposed to play a major role in sex inversion. But a cause and effect relationship has not yet been established. More experimental studies on more types of ambisexual species are badly needed. Future work will show …

<title>Eye movements during silent and oral reading with stabilized versus free head movement and different eye-trackers</title>

2008

Eye movement research of reading has been done on a battery of eye-tracking setups during last decades. We compared reading data of the same group of six students, their eyes were tracked by a video-based helmet-mounted system with the data sampling frequency of 50 Hz and a setup with a chin-rest at 240 Hz. We found that not only the number of fixations may decrease after reading practice, but so does also the mean duration of fixations. In spite of the short duration of saccades, their distributions and changes in them are similarly reported in the two experimental conditions. Lack of significant correlation in the HED data testifies to the result variability due to measurement technique. …
